    1. [RossGen] McKenzie 1861 & 1871 Census
    2. espencer
    3. Hello Everyone: I have been staying off the List as my FHC has closed for renovations. I do have 3 films on order for the 1861 & 1871 Census and Parish records but now I don't expect to see them before the New Year with the renovations. If anyone has access to these Census, I sure would appreciate any help. I am looking for Mary McKenzie about age 60 in 1861 or her husband Alexander McKenzie about the same age in 1861. Alexander was a Builder / Architect. They were in Stornoway in 1851 with their son Francis (he was age 9 then). This closing of the FHC has left me grounded until they re-open. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks You Lorraine Ottawa, Canada

    3. Hi Jim If you ever find a wild and wonderful item to seach, do let the list know. The oldest record I have found on Isle of Skye was 1838 for my line. I was really trying to find some death records for North Uist (Arbuckle) but was told there were no records before 1820. Do let us know. 3. I joined the list last week and thought it was a bit quiet. Maybe that's just because nobody is posting to it. Lets keep it going. I am researching Gairs in Moray, Nairn, Inverness and Ross. I have recently been told that they are part of clan Ross but they seem to move around. Could that be to do with the clearances or did they just have itchy feet. My great grandfather Alexander Gair married Margaret Fraser in Inverness on 15 March 1861. His parents were William Gair and Isabella McLennan. hers Donald Fraser and Mary McKenzie. According to the 1881 & 1891 census Alexander was born in Croy, but I have failed to find the family in the 1851 census in Croy & Dalcross or neighbouring parishes. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

    1. [RossGen] Gordon-Munro
    2. Robyn Pascoe
    3. Hi listers I have a problem of the brick wall type and am hoping someone out there may be able to help. I have a George GORDON born at Stornoway in 1847, son of Robert GORDON (Farmer) and Barbara nee MUNRO. I can find no record of their marriage or births but am presuming a farmer would have been fairly firmly settled on Lewis. I realise records are difficult to find in this area of the world but I live in hope. The George Gordon in question emigrated to New Zealand around 1860 and this (from his death certificate) is the only information we have. Cheers Robyn Pascoe Hawke's Bay New Zealand

    1. [RossGen] Lochbroom - STEWART/McLEOD
    2. Suzanne Irvine/Mal Smith
    3. Hello, I am hoping that someone who may have the OPR for Lochbroom, could do a look up for me please. I am looking for the birth details of Alexanderina STEWART - from the 1881 census, I "know" that she was born in Lochbroom. On 23 Jun 1863, she married Alexander MacLeod in Kincardine, Kincardine Parish, R&C (I got this from the IGI online). They then had a heap of kids in Kincardine. So, any info that someone may be able to supply would be great! Many thanks, Suzanne Irvine Brisbane, Australia.

    3. Hello Jim, Well, I have one Graham - a Mary Graham who was married to a Roderick Macleod, and a daughter Barbara (who also married a Roderick Macleod). Barbara was born around 1804 and settled with Roderick in Lochbroom. I don't know where Mary Graham was born (around 1770-80?), though I suspected it might have been to the north in Assynt. Good luck and if you think there might be a link, please get back to me. 3. Hi Jim, Have you tried the Parish records. Also, try contacting the town/regional archives to see where the records might be stored. Not all records from that time-period have survived. ======= Peace and Gentle Sunsets, ~~~ Pam http://www.geocities.com/orcawind ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Graham" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 08, 2001 11:47 AM Subject: [RossGen] Help!!!! please - Advice needed > Could some one help or advise me please > Birth, Marriage & Death records prior to 1823 dont > seem to have been kept!! 3. Does anyone know if there are lists of Military Pensioners that can be accessed? And how does one figure out which regiment he might have been in? On my great-grandfather's marriage certificate (1863) his father's name and occupation is given as follows : Hugh Fraser, Military Pensioner, Deceased. The marriage is registered in the Urquhart and Logie Wester district of Ross-shire. Lilian

    3. Hello all, Can anyone out there resolve a discussion (argument??) going on in my household at the moment, about how long someone in the army might have served? I think I have found someone in my tree (a MacLeod), married 1769 in Edinburgh, a tailor now soldier in the Scots Guards - who, I think, was back in the Highlands by 1772. Do you think it was possible he only served a very few years before returning home? Kate Kate and David Ferris [email protected]

    3. Hi Hazel: I also have a Norman MacLeod and can only guess he was born about 1793 in Kilpheader, North Uist, Scotland. He was the brother to my g-g-g-grandmother and his parents were Dr Murdoch MacLeod and Mary MacLean. A cousin of this Norman's was a sailor and later went to Austalia to live. I have supected some of the MacLeod's went there also but I have no info other then this. Would sure like to find a connection. Lorraine Ottawa, Canada P.S. Norman also had a brother John which I cannot find either. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hazel Magann" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 04 October, 2001 17:42 Subject: [RossGen] Re: SHIP > Hello all > I am hoping someone maybe able to point me in the direct I need.
