    3. Hi David I am guessing here, but I think he would most likely learn as an apprentice on a private estate, not necessarily in Scotland. From some literature (novels) I have found that English estates often employed Scots as gardeners - we all know that there was a tradition of Scottish doctors working in England, but Scottish gardeners is less well know, if true. There are Botanic Gardens in Glasgow and in Edinburgh, but you would have to check the dates they were established. I don't know if they were in existence before 1862. 2. Scottish gardners were much sought after on English and other European estates, and several went on to some prominence. David Douglas of Scone for instance became a very famous plant collector in the US and Canada (discovering thousands of new species including the Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce etc). His travels and adventures were extraordinary. Another was George Forrest from Falkirk who brought back from China and Tibet many of the rhododendrons we grown in our gardens. Lachie Munro

    3. Something I had forgotten when I made my initial reply to David. Hundreds, if not thousands of botanical specimans from North America contain the name Douglas. Douglas was an under gardener on the estate of Lord Mansfield at Perth, Scotland. His botanical exploration of North America was sponsored by the Lord Mansfield of the 19th Century. The purpose being that Douglas would send specimans back to the estate. You can imagine my astonishment in 1979, when I realized the grove of trees I was walking through, all the trees were planted in rows, were Sequoia Gigantias, giant redwoods from the Sierra Nevada of California. 1. McDonald/McKAY and Queen Victorias pardon
    2. june riddell
    3. Can anyone tell me if there was such a thing as Queen Vicctorias pardon? My 2X Great Grandfather William McDonald or McKay born Ross and Cromarty 1835. There is no trace of birth and marriage and death cert have mothers name as McDONALD on one and McKay on the other, fathers name changes too. The explanation for this was passed down by American relatives They say he was born to Ann McDONALD and Alexander McKAY joined the British Army, don't know which one ,was a deserter and came back to North Scotland and used his mothers surname. All deserters were apparently pardened by the q ueen on her Golden Jubilee would this be correct? and would there be copies of names somewhere? June

    2. Merren Cliff
    3. Seeing the recent request that Julie answered I wondered if someone would mind checking the 1841 census for my Munros. Janet Munro (born c 1808) married William Urquhart (born c 1800 possibly) 13/11/1829 and they appear to have remained in Feran, ATrbat or Hilton area for sometime. Janet had younger siblings Andrew (c 1810), Margaret (c 1812), Helen (c 1816 and married in 1848 to James Bremner in 1848), Iasbel (c 1819), George (c. 1821) and John (c 1824). The Munro parents were George & Helen (nee McKenzie) I believe. Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers Merren Victoria, Australia --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hi, this email was sent by me to the family of Donald Maclellan it is copies of all the mail received on list re. Donald unfortunately they had already closed off this email address. Anna ----- Original Message ----- From: Anna Verner To: .donniedingwall@maclennan86.freeserve.co.uk Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2004 10:46 AM Subject: To The Maclennan Family It is with deepest regrets that I heard of the death of Donald Maclennan today. We have lost a connection with Scotland that we will probably never be able to replace, Donald went out of his way to help us all, we will miss him. My sympathy goes out to you his family at this time. Anna (List admin.) Hi - sorry to hear of the passing of this fine man. He was very helpful to me as I tried to research my Dingwall surname family. He was very happy to go an extra step with his suggestions - sympathy goes to his family. Regards from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Canada Valerie Barrett I would like to add my regrets to those of Anna, and to extend my sincere sympathy to his family. Donald did a great deal of research on my behalf and I have him to thank for tracing my second great grandmother and her family. His kindness and gentle sense of humour were apparent in his letters and I shall always think of him with great warmth and gratitude. Helen Herbert - Christchurch, New Zealand I am so sorry to hear of Donald's death. I feel that I have lost a good friend. He helped me a great deal with my MacLennans on The Black Isle. Without him I would never have known that my great grandfather had one brother who stayed in Scotland, nor would I have connected with a cousin in Australia. We will all miss his eagerness to help us with our research. He was a truly kind and understanding person. All my sympathy to his family. Mim Aline I feel like I have lost a friend. Not that long ago Donald found the birth of a sibling to my great great grandfather and said he would check it next time he was there(at the records office). I had no idea that he was old or ill and presumably he was both but was kind enough to respond to my posting. Thanks for notifying the list. Hope he has lots of descendants and they have a good wake! Elizabeth in Aus I am very sadden to hear of Donald's passing.. He was a true gentleman. His devotion, patience, and love of genealogy and all things McLennan was truly amazing. He was a great ambassador for Genealogy, for Scotland and for Tartan History. I join with all those of Scottish connection in passing on my deepest sympathy to his family, relatives, friends and Clan members. I will always have fond memories of our chats on all things Scottish. Donnie, I will toast your memory tonight. Farewell my friend. Neal Hi, I 'm sad to hear of Donnie's death. He was the first person to help me when I joined RossGEN list. He looked up my Applecross McLeas for me and helped me start my research on the family. He also went down to Inverness and looked up records for me. On other occasions we also exchanged information about our elderly Mothers! Please pass on my condolences to the family. Bobbie here in New Zealand Sorry to hear that Donald is gone. He was such a help to me. It was was good to know was there to ask again. He will be missed. -- Sincerely, Celia Ann Roberts, Reference Simsbury Public Library 725 Hopmeadow Street Simsbury, CT 06070 860-658-7663, Fax 860-658-6732 Farewell to Donald a man with an amazing will to help. Not a common thing in this day and age. Donald not only was able to confirm where my people were buried and when they died but also visited the Inverness Library to check details. And to top things off went to the the Urray Churchyard, photographed the grave site and emailed the photos to me. He made me a very happy lady that day. For his kindness he will be noted in my book of people to remember and think fondly of. Lisa Deepest sympathy to the family of Donald MacLennan.I will be ever grateful to him for all the work he put in for our McLennan family in N.Z. The photos he sent to me of the family graves in Struy Churchyard with his new digital camera were just the missing link we needed.Thankyou Donald. Maureen Finlayson. Orewa New Zealand. I, too, am saddened at Donald's passing. He has assisted me on numerous occasions in my quests for Scottish ancestors (and all of the other background info that I needed to acquire), and the man was truly a fountain of information, with a great sense of humour to match. Rest in peace, Donald. Suzanne Brisbane, Australia. I too was saddened by the news of Donald MacLennan's death. He was a very special and kind to those of us researching from afar. When I first started this hobby about 5 years ago he was so helpful - he went out of his way to find the obituaries for my grandfather and uncle. He put me in touch with a very reliable, reasonable and knowledgable researcher (who I still use). When I was looking for some of my Dad's cousins from Dingwall, again he helped with some information - even found out where they were buried. He was a rare one - generous with his time and knowledge. Everytime I think of Dingwall "donniedingwall" always comes to mind. He will be missed ! My condolences to his family. Win MacKenzie Victoria, BC Canada I didn't know this gentleman, but I'm impressed with what I have read about his willingness to help others. Perhaps the best way to honor his memory and the legacy he left is to give others the same kind of help he so willingly gave to the members of this list. I think he would have liked that. 3. Hello everyone. I am new to this list and I am looking for any information on Janet (or Jessie) Davidson, born in Tain about 1830, ( I'm not sure about this as two censuses give different ages, it could have been 1824). She married a William Davies,( I cannot find a marriage in England, but it is possible they married in Scotland), They were living in Birmingham in 1881 and 1891 but none were on the 1901 census. I believe Janet had a brother named Duncan. Could anyone tell me if there is a register office in Tain where I may be able to find any information. Best regards, John.
