    1. Re: Revolutionary War - British Soldiers, Named Ross
    2. Charles Geo.Ross UE
    3. Hi all; My 6th great grandfather "Zenas(us) Ross is listed in the 2 volumes of books "Rolls of Vermont Soldiers in the REVOLUTIONARY WAR 1775-1783", prepared and published under the direction of Major General Martha T. Rainville, The Adjutant General, Vermont, Camp Johnson, Colchester, Vermont, 1998, Volume I and II. He is listed on page 155 of the pay roll of Capt. Simeon Wright's ( his father-in-law) company under the command of Col, Gideon Warren's regiment as a scout to the lake against Crownpoint and then to Ticonderoga in the last of March in the year 1780. And again on page 300, pay roll of Capt. Nathl. Blanchars's company of militia in Col. Ebenezer Allen's regiment in the State of Vermont, for an alarm commencing the 12th. of October, 1780 and ending the 12th. of November, 1780. Zenas then switched sides, going over to the British and because he had been a Patriot, Sir John Johnson assigned him as a spy for the British. He is listed in the book, 'Lunenburgh, or the Old Eastern District', By J. F. Pringle, Judge County Court. Published in 1890. List of officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the 84th Regiment, King's Royal Regiment of New York, the Loyal Rangers (Major Jessup's corps), Butler's Rangers, King's Rangers, etc., who settled in the eastern part of Upper Canada (Ontario) copied by permission of Merrrs. Hunter, Rose & Co., from "The Contennial of the Settlement of Upper Canada", published in 1885. Other Ross' also listed are, Finley, Jacob, Philip, Thomas, Walter and William. At the end of the war Zenas had to flee the now United States to avoid hanging as a spy. He wintered in Sorel Quebec the in the spring traveled with the rest of the Ranger's up the St. Lawrence to Lake Ontario and Adolphustowne where he received his "Land Ticket" for Crown Land. Those who stayed loyal to the Crown were United Empire Loyalist. I hope this helps you a little.
