Posted on: Ross Family Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/FamilyAssoc/Ross/652 Surname: Cameron, King, Sinclair ------------------------- The obituary of my great great grandfather DONALD ROSS advises that he was born in TAIN, Rosshire, Scotland around 1803. I suspect that his family joined the Free Church of Scotland and as a result was a casualty of the Highland Clearances. He emmigrated to Wellington, New Zealand in the 1840's via the Cape (South Africa). I suspect that a number of his family may have gone to the Cape, following the clearances, as my father can remember his mother speaking of cousins there. My quest is to find the names of the parents and siblings of Donald Ross. The only clues I have to go on are Tain, the occupation of Donald Ross (settler, farmer, policeman and court bailiff) and the names of his children: Robert, Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary, Isabella, Angus, Sarah, Janet Dunn (known as Jessie), John, William, Barbara Allen (from eldest to youngest). The Scottish naming patterns appears to have been followed as Donald Ross married Mary Cameron (from Portree, Isle of Sky) in 1845 in Wellington, New Zealand, whose mother's name was Catherine. Therefore, possibly the parents of Donald Ross could have been Robert and Elizabeth Ross - but this is a long shot. Two of the children also have surnames and second Christian names, that is, Dunn and Allen. This may also be of significance. Any information on Rosses in Tain would be appreciated.
