Donald. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 20:16:41 -0500 From: mscaleb <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Ross Family in Dundee, Angus I found your email address at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coigach/. I am at this point grasping at wispy straws of information and thought you might possibly be able to help. My grandparents were Donald Ross and Jessie Mae Hallies. She was listed in the 1881 Lieff & Benvie, Angus, census, living with a Noble family. They were married in Dundee on 12/25/1883. Jessie's family was from Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway. There are too many individuals named Donald Ross in the 1881 Angus census to determine which one is "mine" without other information about him. I saw that many of them were from Ross & Cromarty and hoped something might click with your family. If this in some way matches information you may have, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for your help. Sharon Shumate Austin, Texas

Hi, I am new to this list and am researching the family of my grandmother Alice Louisa Ross. Alice was the daughter of Hugh Ross and Louisa Margaret Chrystal. Hugh was born in Lairg, Scotland and he died 21 February 1915 in Fairlie, New Zealand. I have no dates of when he was born, nor when he travelled out to New Zealand. I have managed to get some info from the National Archives in New Zealand regarding some of the family, as yet I am not sure where they fit in. I believe Alice had 2 sisters, Mary Jane who married Henry Rapsey Struthers and Jessie Leah who married Thomas Bruce Smith. The only brother I have been able to find so far is Hugh Chrystal Ross who died 22 October 1923 in Fairlie, New Zealand. I would appreciate some help if anyone knows of this family, or is researching them too. Thanks Jeni

Sorry I have not been in touch since we exchanged emails in July, I have been swamped with work and my genealogy has been suffering! Still think it likely your "Ross alias MacGillanders" crowd at Tain are related to my own at Logie Easter and Tarbat, hope to eventually chase down the link. > Some progress (though small) on my Crawford Ross. On 10 July 1858 in Tarbat > by Fern. Alexander Ross was born. father Crawford Ross. The online I.G.I. lists the mother as Catherine McDonald. Shown same day at Tarbat by Fearn is the birth of a Crawford Ross at Tarbat with father as Crawford Ross and mother as "Catherine Ross"! Unclear to me if it is the same child and mother, or if there were twin boys... > Could any kind researcher let me know who the mother was and whether a > marriage can be located. Only marriage in right period in register was 4 February 1857 at Tarbat of Crawford Ross to Ann McDonald. Crawford seems to have working his way through all the McDonald women in Easter Ross, or Ann is the Catherine shown as mother to Alexander and young Crawford in 1858.... > An Alexander Ross arrived in Australia with this family but it was alway > assumed that is was a nephew.....now appears it was a previous marriage. Seems names were somewhat "unfixed" with this bunch, possibly all the McDonald women were the same person... I'll cc the McDonald list this message and see if anyone there is familiar with Easter Ross McDonalds. > Hope my enquire brings a response.....Val Smith Sydney Australia All the best from the brink of Niagara, Donald. /~~--__ | Donald MacDonald-Ross | / \_ | | I am looking for; | L | MOONEY-L Listowner, | Mooneys in Meath, | l | McDONALD-L Listowner, | MacDonalds in Coigach ~~-~\__ L | ROSS-L Listowner | Rosses in Easter Ross ~L_ \__ |----------------------------------------------- / __/ | My web page presently deals with the history, /_/`Here | sociology, and genealogy of Coigach; ~ I am.| http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~coigach
