    1. [ROSS-L] Re: ROSS-D Digest V00 #195
    2. Hi, Frances, YES!! I would very much like to share details with you about the Ross family! The only catch is that I have very few details to share. I do know one thing that might connect my ROBERTSONs with the ROSS family (besides the fact that William ROBERTSON marr Jane ROSS. d/o Alexander ROSS of Balnagowen). That is that James ROBERTSON, the father of William, was a lineal descendant of Baron Alexander ROBERTSON, Viscount Struan or Strowan, and from everything I've read about the ROBERTSON clan, they are direct descendants of Robert the Bruce. So yes, there is definately a link between the two families. However, the Alexander ROSS that you mentioned in your letter, who was the son of the John ROSS, b ca 1794, was much too late to be "my" Alexander. But I know that many families use the same given names over and over, and also use surnames as given names. (In my own family, although we "daughtered out" of the Robertson surname 1863 with the marriage of Emma Cecilia ROBERTSON to James MARSHALL, the name is still used in my family. My father's given name was Robertson, and it is also the given name of my younger son. And my mother's middle name was her mother's maiden name, and it's my middle name as well (it's ARMSTRONG...do you have of them?!) So, all in all, I really do think that there's a connection here, although I'd like more info. And I meant to ask you: you mentioned Easter Ross, and also Kilmuir Easter. What exactly is Easter, in this case? As I'm sure you can tell, I need help on my Scottish history and places! I've been there twice now (last summer and the summer before), but I was in the Borders. This coming summer, I'm hoping to go again, and this time take a bus tour in the Highlands before the Border Gather. (By way of explanation, my older son works for an airline, so Mom gets free passes!) Please let me know what you think of there being a real connection here. Best wishes, Barbara (in St. Peters, Missouri, but born & brought up in NYC) f

    1. [ROSS-L] ROSS family in ILLINOIS.
    2. Frances MacLeod
    3. Surnames: ROSS, BATCHELOR, MAY, ELNIKIS, PITT My grandfather Errington Ross has 6 brothers who left the highlands of Scotland in the mid 1800s never to return. Elliott ROSS settled in Chicago working for the railroad but took ill and died 1935.He had two sons (1) Earle ROSS who married Alice Woton in Crown Point Indiana 1919 and settled in Littlefalls ,Minnesota as the popular manager of the JCPenny store.and (2) Harold of whom I know nothing as yet. Elliott's widow Elizabeth's obituary lists family names which I hope someone will recognise: Her second husband the late John KENT, her daughters Gladys MAY,Isabel BATCHELOR (1918-1984), Betty ELKINIS and son John jnr (KENT?) Her sister Isabel PITT. A grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 3 I feel sure she must live on in local memory. At the time she died (1963) aged 74 she was living in Wheaton.IL. Does anyone recognise any of these and do I have living relatives in America? Frances Inverness . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----

    1. [ROSS-L] Balnagowen/Balnagowan/Balnagown.
    2. Frances MacLeod
    3. Hi Barbara, I have been following with interest the debate about Balnagowen. At Kildary in Easter Ross the family of Hugh the 5th Earl of Ross (he who married the sister of Robert the Bruce) built Balnagown Castle. It was a Ross 'seat' until 1942 and is now owned by Al Fayed of Harrod's fame who has restored it handsomely. Could the Aberdeen-shire Balnagowen (or Balnagowan as it is now) have been named from the Ross castle Balnagown in the North? It is to be found just North-West of Aboyne on the road to Tarland. My brick wall is at Milntowne (now Milton) next to Kildary where my ancestor ANDREW Ross married Margaret Montgomery (b 1749) dtr of the linen manufacturer John Montgomery ,Mill House, Milton. Andrew's son JOHN Ross is listed on the 1851 census as a famer with 7 servants on the farm of Milntown.I have only his unwed sister Elizabeth of his line .This is the parish of Kilmuir Easter. And so I wonder whether there is a link between these two Ross families. JOHN Ross b 1794c married Jane Anderson in 1823 .They had 6 children and 32 grandchildren but only one named ALEXANDER .Many years ago I spoke with the Ross family still living in the village of Milton and was told that there were two Ross brothers who ran the mill but they had a falling out and one left the area. I'd like to exchange details if you think we may have a link. Frances Inverness, Scotland.

    2. Sue, this is in reference to your message to the ROSS list on 9 Sept (Monday): You mentioned a Finley ROSS in PA. I realize that I'm really grasping at straws here, but when you've been stuck on a family for nearly twenty years, you grab at anything at all! I have an Eliza FINLEY, b 23 Dec 1806 @ Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PA, d 20 July 1884 @ Kennebunkport, ME (poss visiting family or friends?) She marr, bef 1837, James WRAY, b Oct 1765 @ Co. Donegal, Ireland. d 4 Nov 1863 @ Philadelphia, prob. Both James and Eliza are buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, in or near Philadelphia. I've never been able to find the parents and/or siblings of Eliza, nor can I find the parents or siblings of James . I don't even know the name of the town in which he was born. These are my gg grandparents, and they are one colossal brick wall! When I read your letter, what I initially saw were the two names, FINLEY and ROSS and it really grabbed me as I also have some ROSS's. But my Jane Ross was b ca 1740-45, she was the d/o Alexander ROSS of Balnagowen, Scotland. (I can't find the name Balnagowen in my atlas, but I'm sure it was in Scotland, and I think probably in Aberdeenshire.) This Jane ROSS marr William ROBERTSON, B @ Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, Sct. He was s/o JAMES ROBERTSON, of Drumnahoy, parish of Cluny, Aberdeenshire, Sct. The son of William and Jane (Ross) ROBERTSON, was Archibald (there were two other sons as well). Archibald, a painter and a miniaturist, came to NY in Nov of 1791. He met and marr Eliza ABRAMSE (of Dutch ancestry). They lived and died in NYC. So, as you can see, this is a very tenuous connection between FINLEY and ROSS, but I warned you that I'm grasping at Anything at all!! Do you see the possibility of a connection here at all? (You've no idea how much I want there to be a connection!!) Best, Barbara in MO

    3. Hi Donna, You mentioned that Ms. Wright's book has Isaac Allison Ross as the son of Isaac Ross, Jr. (the Captain's son) and Sarah Elliott. Well, Isaac Jr. appeared to have died in 1832. In the 1860 Jefferson County census, I. Allison Ross is listed as being 26 years old and his wife, Eugenia, was 20 years old. This places his birth in or around 1834 (approximately 2 years after Isaac Jr.'s death). Were there two Isaac Allison Rosses in Jefferson County?? Melvin
