My ROSS ancestor, Donald ROSS, was one of those who served with the British during the American Revolution and ended up in Guysborough, Nova Scotia. He was granted land based on his status as a Loyalist. Donald's wife's name was Ann, but I have no last name for her. Ann died in 1817 in Guysborough. I have no idea when Donald was born nor when he died. I have a list of their children's and grandchildren's birth dates. Sorry, there's not a single James in the list. -- Peace and Gentle Sunsets, Pam
Hi Jean and List, For what it's worth, George Ross, Signer, was born in 1730, so I don't see how he could possibly be the father, let alone the grandfather of your James Ross. George had two sons, George and James. George (2) had three sons, Patton Ross, William Bird Ross, and George Washington Ross. Everything I have found indicates Patton and William Bird Ross remained in the Lancaster, PA area until they died, and son George Washington moved later in life to Cumberland County, PA. George (1)'s son James, born in 1753, married Maria Sabina Kuhn in 1769. He became Judge of Concordia Parish, Louisiana Territory. He died in the Orleans Territory in 1808. Hi everybody, Since everyone is throwing out their James Ross, I thought I would put forth my wife's ancestor. His name is James Ross, born in Scotland about 1799. On 28 May, 1838, he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown. He died before 1870. His children were (as we know): John Alexander Ross b. 1841 James Ross b. abt 1842 Elizabeth Ross b. abt 1844 Thomas Ross b. abt 1846 Margaret "Maggie" Ross b. abt 1848 Daniel L. Ross b. 05 May 1849 (My wife's ancestor) Charles Ross b. abt 1851 Ann Ross b. abt 1854 Daniel L Ross is buried in Adams Cemetery, Cumberland Co, NC. If any of this rings a bell, I appreciate the info in advance. -- Myron Spainhour
There is a story of the history of Northumberland on this site and there is a story of Capt. James ROSS and his army regiment. I thought that someone might be interested. I also found in a 1850 census on Boone Co.,Ind. these names: Samuel ROSS age 38,Physicisn, born in Ind. (FATHER) Sarah Ross age 32,born in Kentucky (MOTHER) Samuel Ross age 13,born in IND. (CHILD) Sarah Ross age 11,born in IND. (CHILD) Jacob Ross age 9,born in IND. (CHILD) Ellen Ross age 7,born in IND>.(CHILD) I found these on the following URL's http://searches1.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/palnorthumberland/areahistory/bell0005.txt http://searches1.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/in/boone/cencus/1850/pg0150b.txt I hope that this can be of help to someone. Unfortunately not my direct line. Elizabeth
Dick: One of the most outstanding things I have observed on this Ross-L connection is the vast number of brickwalls. Mine is Samuel Ross. He is one of the Bath county, KY Rosses. I can trace him down to today just fine, but I can't find his parents. I think the Rosses simply hatched a kid and then threw him out with the bathwater to fend for himself. Must have been a Ross characteristic. My Samuel appeared first in KY in 1796 when he married Margaret Baird Wasson, a widow with 5 kids. He and Margaret had three sons: William Joseph, born 29 May 1796, Thomas, born 20 Feb 1798, and Joseph B. born 25 Aug 1800. All three men were still alive when their father died in 1850. I descend from Joseph who had 8 daughters and no sons. I have never ever found a thing on William or Thomas and either or them could have fathered your James. If you ever find out that either of these men is your man's father, let me know. Julia

Yet another Ross without parents...does anyone tie in with any of these??? Of course...John R.'s parents are unknown. I have much more to share on this line if there are any connections. Happy Hunting All! Michelle Ross Generation 1 1. John R.1 Ross was born 1795 in Virginia, and died August 1871 in Marion County, TN. He married Nancy Tabor. She died 1850. Children of John Ross and Nancy Tabor are: + 2 i. John Edward2 Ross, born 1831. 3 ii. Mary Polly Ross, born February 11, 1825. 4 iii. Angeline Ross. 5 iv. Delila Ross. 6 v. Leroy Ross. 7 vi. Elizabeth Ross. 8 vii. Martha Ross.
>I think the Rosses simply hatched a kid and then threw him out with the bathwater to fend for himself. Must have been a Ross characteristic.< That is so appropeaux! We have a Rice Farrar Ross, who married Sarah Bonham, and "hatched" about eleven children...all with very distintive names...and we can't find his parents either. I was "surfing" one day when I ran across information regarding the Highland regiments that fought during the rev. war. There was one regiment that was in NC, the 72 or 76th regiment of foot, that had a James Ross on the roster. Some of these soldiers ended up in Canada after the war, and there are millions (exaggerating) of Rosses in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I wonder if this is where many of our Rosses were. ????? B. MacKie
Every Ross genealogist has a "missing" James Ross. Mine is James Ross born 6-28-1831 in Bath County, VA.. Actually James Ross isn't missing but his parents are. He moved to Harrison County (West) Virginia in 1845 and married Catherine Kuykendall of Barbour County (West) Virginia born 5-2-1833 on 3-28-1851 in Harrison County. There were several Ross families in Bath County but I haven't yet been able to connect them. --Dick Ross

Looking for links to Charles G. Ross, Chief Factor for the Hudson Bay Trading Company in Canada. He was born in Kingscraig, Inverness, Scotland (date unknown -- parents unknown). Married Isabelle Melville in 1822 in Pac la Pluie, Canada. Was assigned to numerous trading posts in western and northwestern Canada. Eventually was assigned to build the first trading post/fort at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. This trading post was named Fort Victoria and later became the city of Victoria, British Columbia. He died June 27, 1844. His daugther, Catherine Ross (b. 1832), is my ggg-mother. Mike Murray

Hi . . . thought we'd try our search from a different perspective. Does anyone have a WILLIAM ROSS (Will Ross, Bill Ross, W.M. Ross) who died in Morgan County, TN in 1909/10? We are unsure of birthdate or birthplace; possibly born around 1880 in GA or TN, but we're unsure. We've been at a blank wall with him for several years . . . could you kindly check your ROSS files from this angle to see if you have anything that possibly comes close? My 2nd Great Grandfather was Americus Vespecia Ross. He was born according to the 1900 Putnam County, Missouri census in October of 1855 in Iowa. Whether this is 100% accurate, I don't know. I do know that he was in Appanoose County, Iowa as his son was born there in 1883. And he was in Putnam County, Missouri. If anyone has Americus in their ancestors, please share information with me. I am willing to share all that I have. Thanks for any help in advance.
