    3. Hurrah! Success! My application for DAR Membership was approved and I will be received Dec 11. I applies for my 86 year old mother too, and we will go together. The Patriot I used was Reuben Ross MD Line R 9025 born in 1755 in Dorchester Md, and served as with Capt. Arthur Wheatley, Capt. Stamford and Capt Mace. In 1796 he moved to Rockingham Co. NC for several years then moved to Sumner Co. Tn and in 1828 he moved to Morgan Co IL where he applied for a pension 16 Nov 1832. See NARA Film Film # 804-2088 Items 161-163; Items 174-176; Items 177-179; Items #156-159; 162. He has been confused with another Reuben Ross who was also a Patriot and died in Ohio. Thanks to two distant cousins, Bob Davenport and Melba, who shared their information. That may my work so much easier. Marita

    3. The following is from Handwriting & Script (Cyndi's List); "Deciphering Old Handwriting": The Leading "s" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of the most dramatic changes in letters has been the letter "s." Over 100 years ago the "s" was often written like a backward "f." This strange symbol for "s" was used very commonly in instances where there was a "double s." The unusual s first, called the "leading s." Then the regular s. Go to http://www.firstct.com/fv/x-name.html for examples. The first name is "Ross".

    3. Hi Sherrie, I lived in Germany for 10 years and can confirm that the double "ss" is still written as "fs" in Europe. When searching for ROSS in old documents, be sure to look for ROFS. > I'm interested that you have written Rofs/Ross. > I've been researching a Martin August Christian > Albert Ross c.1838 Holtstein, Denmark. Posted on: Ross Family Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Ross/595 Surname: Rofs, Ross, Jolinsat ------------------------- Hi Lois, I'm interested that you have written Rofs/Ross. I've been researching a Martin August Christian Albert Ross c.1838 Holtstein, Denmark. I originally thought his surname was Rofs because of the way it was written on his marriage certificate. I though they must have changed there name to Ross by the mid 1800's. I've since had someone tell me the old fashion writing for 'ss'looked liked 'fs'. Your thoughts? My Martin ACA Ross' parents were Christian Rofs/Ross and Margaret Jolinsat? I'm not sure of Margaret's surname, it's hard to read. However when my Martin ACA Ross died in 1896 (in Vic, Australia), it stated on his death certificate his father was also Martin Ross, not Christian. Unfortunately it also stated mother unknown, so I was unable to confirm Margaret's surname. Kind regards, Sherrie Blackman. Sydney, Australia.

Although I believe he passed way in 1969, we are looking for more information on the family. Here's what little I have: Samuel Everett Stockwell, b. 6/10/1928 in Pennsylvania, d. 7/1969 in OH. He never married my mother, but I ended up with his last name. Two of us were given up for adoption. He may have later married and had more children, but we've not been able to find anyone who knows of him. Any connection? Any clues? Thanks . . .

    3. Posted on: Ross Family Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Ross/585 Surname: ROSS ------------------------- In response to your message, I am interested in learning more about William Larkin Ross, his son, grandsons and gr-grandsons. My grandfather was William Ross probably from GA (not confirmed) but we do not have any solid information about him including birthplace/birthdate/family history, etc. Family lore has it that he came from GA, moved to TN. We do know that he married on 8/23/1900 to Julia Langley in Morgan County, TN. However, in the 1900 Morgan County, TN census the only other Ross families we can find is one as follows: Marion L. Ross (b. 1874) - wife Vera M. Ross (b. 1875) - son Marion L. Ross (b. 1899) Edward J. Ross (b. 1884) -- brother to Marion L. Ross We are trying to make a link from these Rosses to my grandfather William Ross who was born around 1880. Would any of these names show up in your generations of William Larkin Ross or at least provide some hint of being the same family? We're searching every avenue we can find. Thank you for your help and your assistance. Of course, we'll be glad to share any information we have should there be any possibility of a link between your William Larkin Ross and our William Ross. Thank you, Ron Ross [email protected] http://focusontheword.com/gen
