    3. Sue, The last I knew Roots Web does not allow attachments on LIST messages, they will not come through. If you get a virus in an attachment it is not through a Roots Web Mailing List but from direct messages to you by another party. Those you are wise to screen if you don't know the originator. 3. Hi all, I have gotten about 10-12 viruses over the past three weeks. Yes, I have gotten the snow white one about 6 times. RW doesn't allow attachments to any of it's mail lists. However, this spammers get email addresses from a wide variety of places and will try to send viruses to the mail list. What happens is that the mail with attachment is rerouted to the list admin (that is how I am getting so many of them!). The best protection is to get the latest virus software - the one that provides email support. I have also chosen to stop using Outlook Express as my mail reader and am using Netscape 4.7 Communicator instead. OUtlook Express - even with the recent patches still has a problem with loading the email into the reader frame. This past week - I had to recover my HP system due to these attacks. While the worms didn't do all their dirty work they did corrupt my system and in the end all I could do is run the recovery program and clean up my entire system (even though the virus scan told me my computer was clean). The best defense is a good offense! Protect yourself and set your mail filters to delete any .exe file attachments from the server without downloading them to your computer. Happy New Year! -- Best wishes, Carol Hepburn [email protected] Phoenix, AZ USA

    3. Dear List Just thought I notify the list that today upon opening this email account, I had just a few new emails. They came from one of either two mailing lists I subscribe to, this being one of them. Apparently through a post to the list(? - I don't see how but all recent emails received recently have been posts directly from these lists) I also was emailed a virus that came across entitled HAHAHA and the subject line refers to Snow White. Upon checking this out (I had prior warning of such a virus and knew not to open the attachment) via Symantec this virus is aka W95.Hybris.gen and this is a worm that spreads by email as an attachment to outgoing emails, the attachment may have many different names. This particular one was joke.exe. I apologize for this post not being strictly of a genealogical nature, but being that the only email I use this account for is these 2 mailing lists, or responses to/from these 2 lists, I thought it would be wise to notify through them. Wishing all a safe and Happy New Year... Sue _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    3. Hello Cousins: As everyone probably knows Ancestry.Com is free until the end of December. I found my grandparents and children on this list, plus I think my grandfather's brother. I knew grandfather lived in Halifax but this also proves he lied to us about being born in Scotland (just like the information from the funeral home said which was given by now deceased Ross family members.) My grandfather was Andrew William Ross, his wife Ella and children Daisy, Earle, Caroline. I have copied all the surrounding Rosses in case I find out they are related. About 80 names total. If you find your Ross listed, perhaps we are related. Any links to us let me know. At least now I can stop searching Scotland! ============================================================ DATABASES OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) ============================================================ HALIFAX DISTRICT, NOVA SCOTIA CENSUS, 1901: HALIFAX CITY This database contains more than 39,000 entries of residents in Halifax City (subdistricts A-F, wards 1-6) in the census district of Halifax (#33) in 1901. It lists each person's full name, relationship to the head of the household, full date of birth, and birthplace, as well as year of immigration to Canada (if not Canadian by birth). The database also includes the National Archives film number, division number, page, and family number to help researchers obtain a copy of the actual record, if desired.
