    1. [ROSS-L] Ross in Liverpool
    2. Roy Kelley
    3. Hi Everyone I'm posting my first enquiry on the ROSS list. I am researching the family and descendents of THOMAS ROSS. He was born c1798 maybe in Liverpool. His son ALEXANDER ROSS born around 1818 in Liverpool married ELIZA FIELD in 1842 in Liverpool. They had at least 2 children, ALEXANDER ROSS born in Liverpool in 1848 and his sister ELIZABETH ROSS born again in Liverpool in 1851. The above ALEXANDER married ANNIE COYNE in 1869. All the events happened in Liverpool. ALEXANDER and Annie had 8 children. AGNES ROSS bithdate unknown, JAMES ROSS, died 1948, ADA ROSS, birth unknown, ANNIE ROSS born 1871, married ALBERT KELLEY in 1891 and had one son, JOHN JAMES KELLEY. MARY ELLEN ROSS born 1872 in Everton married ROBERT FLETCHER KELLEY in 1895. Their son JOHN FLETCHER KELLEY was my Grandfather and they had Fishmonger shops in Overberry St. and Picton Road, Liverpool. MARY ELLEN ROSS died in 1920 in Wavertree. The other children of ALEXANDER and Annie were PETER ROSS born c 1875, THOMAS ROSS born c 1877 and JOSEPH ROSS born c 1879. Either PETER or THOMAS moved down south to become a farmer but JOSEPH was murdered in a Lodging house in NEW YORK after working on the tugboats at the harbour. I am still persuing this one with help from the Lancashire listers. Ring any bells with anyone? Regards Roy Kelley

    1. [ROSS-L] Donald Ross from TAIN to NEW ZEALAND
    2. JACQUI GEE
    3. Posted on: Ross Family Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/FamilyAssoc/Ross/652 Surname: Cameron, King, Sinclair ------------------------- The obituary of my great great grandfather DONALD ROSS advises that he was born in TAIN, Rosshire, Scotland around 1803. I suspect that his family joined the Free Church of Scotland and as a result was a casualty of the Highland Clearances. He emmigrated to Wellington, New Zealand in the 1840's via the Cape (South Africa). I suspect that a number of his family may have gone to the Cape, following the clearances, as my father can remember his mother speaking of cousins there. My quest is to find the names of the parents and siblings of Donald Ross. The only clues I have to go on are Tain, the occupation of Donald Ross (settler, farmer, policeman and court bailiff) and the names of his children: Robert, Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary, Isabella, Angus, Sarah, Janet Dunn (known as Jessie), John, William, Barbara Allen (from eldest to youngest). The Scottish naming patterns appears to have been followed as Donald Ross married Mary Cameron (from Portree, Isle of Sky) in 1845 in Wellington, New Zealand, whose mother's name was Catherine. Therefore, possibly the parents of Donald Ross could have been Robert and Elizabeth Ross - but this is a long shot. Two of the children also have surnames and second Christian names, that is, Dunn and Allen. This may also be of significance. Any information on Rosses in Tain would be appreciated.

    3. I'm looking for info on my great grandfather, WALTER C. ROSS, born in Canada abt. 1842, married SALORA A. PHELPS in 1870 in Timber Creek, Riley County, KS. WALTER and SALORA had four sons. They were CLARENCE DUNBAR ROSS, b. abt 1871, NORMAN H. ROSS, b. abt. 1873, CHARLES WESLEY ROSS (my grandfather), b. April 25, 1876, m. abt. 1905-6 to PEARL EDNA PEER, d. November 5, 1958 in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., WA. According to 1875 census of Riley Co. KS, WALTER C. ROSS came to Kansas from Illinois. There is a WALTER C. ROSS listed on the Union Army site who served as a private in the 33rd infantry out of Marion, Illinois, but I can't make a connection. Though WALTER was listed with SALORA and their first two sons on the 1875 Riley Co., KS census, the 1880 census finds SALORA A. (PHELPS) ROSS living at the farm of her parents, sans WALTER (wherever did he go?) with the four boys. And how did young CHARLES WESLEY ROSS find himself in Oregon, and finally Washington? You tell me. Please!! More about SALORA: She wa born in Michigan abt. 1850 to ALMON D. PHELPS and SARAH M. (?) PHELPS. Her brother, GEORGE P. PHELPS was also born in Michigan abt. 1848, perhaps in Calhoun Co.. Her sister, JULIA A. PHELPS was born in Riley Co., KS abt. 1860. ALMON and SARAH were both born in New York in abt. 1817 and 1819 respectively. Thanks for any and all help, Larry ROSS
