    1. [ROSS-L] Genealogical Codicil for a Will
    2. Why see your life's work and interest go to the dump. The editor of the publication listed below was asked what one might do if there is no family interested in research we might leave behind. Seen in "The Certified Copy," Vol. 30, No. 3, Fall 2001, pg. 76, published by Cleveland Gen. Society, Cleveland OH: A Genealogical Codicil to My Last Will and Testament To my spouse, children, or guardian. Upon my demise it is requested that you DO NOT dispose of any or all of my Genealogical records, books, files, notebooks or computer programs for a period of two years. During this time period, please attempt to identify one or more persons who would be willing to take custody of the said materials and the responsibility of maintaining and continuing the family histories. In the event you do not find anyone to accept these materials, please contact the various genealogical organizations that I have been a member of and determine if they will accept some parts or all of my genealogical materials. [List of organizations and addresses at bottom.] Please remember that my genealogical endeavors consumed a great deal of time, travel, and money. Therefore please do not ignore my requests. 3. My grandfather is a descendant of Stephen Ross..he still has family in Grayson Co.Virginia.My father went there to visit in the early 1990s and met several relatives he hadn't seen in a long time,or had never met. They gave him a written history of the family that originates in Scotland. My father was James Madsion Ross the third born James Madison Ross Junior but he later stopped using his middle name, and Gladys Indiola Brown. I have more info if needed,I am unsure of my grandfather's grandparents names. I am very thankful that you posted this,I have had a hard time finding out my dad's exact lineage and this does help. This electronic version prepared by Paul B. Anderson FCCS (USN, Retired), Norfolk, Virginia Rev. Stephen B. Ross (born 1800) was a well-known minister in Grayson Co., VA. He was the son Joseph Ross, who was the son of Rev. George Ross (not certain which was the pioneer in Grayson). Stephen Ross married in 1818 to Elizabeth Anderson; their son Joseph married Luzenia Anderson (daughter of John and Feraby Cornett Anderson). Fields' text, re the Flatridge community, states that Joe Ross had a grist mill on Panther Creek (no date). (Which Joe Ross, father or son of Stephen? probably the son). Stephen R. was buried on Kyle Anderson's farm in the Rockbridge community. Scottish name. F. B. Kegley identifies Ross as Scots-Irish (Sayers, 211). Contact Virginia Smith, Mercersburg, PA for more information. Jacob and John Anderson are on the 1781 militia list (Mont. Co.); James A. is on the 1783 list. On the Mont. Co. taxpayer list are these Andersons: William, Peter, James, Isaac, Thomas, Jacob, John, Cornelius, and George. According to family tradition Jacob and John were brothers; in the 1820 U.S. Census, Grayson Co., VA, Jacob states he was born in NJ (probably the Delaware River Valley). The brothers settled near Middle Fox Creek circa 1780. John left a will written 07 Jan 1826, probated 1830, naming wife Mary and children, Nancy, Milley, Elizabeth, George, Isaac, William, Joseph, and Jonathan. Elizabeth and her husband Reverend Stephen B. Ross (married 12 Mar 1818) inherited the homeplace. Descendants have been traced through William (married Catherine Walling) and Isaac (married Elizabeth Parks). [Edited by PBA] No will has been found for Jacob, but he and wife Susannah had a son, John, who married Feraby Cornett; they are buried at their homesite, on the original grant, the Garnett Anderson place, Rt. 658. Jacob's daughter; Rebecca, married John Hash, and another daughter, Nancy, married William Hash. Other issue of Jacob and Susannah probably included Thomas, Peter, and Jacob Jr. Peter later went to Hancock Co., TN. Maj. James Anderson of Albemarle Co., VA, who came to the New River, married Martha (Patsy) Nuckolls, daughter of John Nuckolls, an early settler in the Grayson area. James might be a brother to Jacob and John; family journeys often started from PA/NJ on the Wagon Road with stop-overs in counties along the way, such as Albemarle. Patsy and James A. reared a family near Galax and are buried in the Anderson cemetery there (Nuckolls, 67). Family discussed in Nuckolls text. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Just found a Barbara Ross born 1854 listed in the 1881 Halifax, Nova Scotia Census listed as wife of my Grandfather Andrew Ross born 1853. I always suspected he was married twice. Does anyone have Barbara Ross in their genealogy? Did Barbara die before he married Eleanor Studivan or were Barbara and he divorced? Thanks for any information. It is possible Barbara's given name was Webber since this family lived next door to them and my father, before he died in 1956, once told us Uncle Charles Webber was his half-brother. 2. Hi, Jennie, Do you happen to know where in England your Alexander Ross was born? The reason I ask is that my 5 g'father was Alexander Ross, b prob in the early 1700's in Scotland. He was "Alexander Ross of Balnagowen/Balnagowan." And the given name of Alexander has been used many times since my 4 g'grandmother, Jane Ross, married William ROBERTSON, of Monymusk, Sct. Jane is the only child that I know of, and I don't even know what Alexander's wife's name was. If you have any info on this family, I'd be eternally grateful for any help you can give me! Thanks a lot for any help, and thanks a lot even if you can't help...you at least read through this! Barbara in MO (but originally from NYC)
