Some of the source material they use is available elsewhere for free or at a much reduced cost particularly when talking about County Roscommon. Griffith's and the 1901 census are available for free at the leitrim-roscommon website--www.leitrim-roscommon.com (although some parishes/townlands are much more complete than others). The 1749 Synge or "Elphin" census is there as well and can also be found elsewhere on the internet, giving in most cases a civil parish name. You can also find (at least I did once) the 1796 Flax growers listing on the internet. The Latter Day Saints website, more commonly known as www.familysearch.org sells a very inexpensive--$20 to $25--CD set "British Vital Records" which has a good deal of Roscommon civil and Roman Catholic parish records. Even a full membership on Ancestry.com looks like a decent deal compared to the Roscommon Heritage Site costs. Maybe most of you know about these other resources but I thought I'd throw them out there for anyone who may not. Using only the county name "Roscommon" for a search indicator is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I originally thought a last name like "Sharkey" (or Sharkett, Sharkety in earlier variations) or a first name like "Dominic" was so unique that anyone in Roscommon with that last name must be one of mine. Well, they may be back 500 years or so, but from at least 1800 on I might as well be searching for John Smith. I do think it is great that those people willing to gamble some euro's for naught are kind enough to share it with others. I may play this particular lottery a couple of times myself at some point and will do the same with the results. Good luck to all. P.S. to my earlier message--The Tithe Applotment book records are also available on microfilm from LDS if you're near one of their local U.S. facilities. You have to order them in most cases I believe for viewing on site at one of their family history centers, but it only costs about $5.00 for the appropriate film once you've tracked down the number and I believe they will help you with that as well.
