Hi, Camilla, FYI, while Denis Mahon was ambushed and shot in November 1847, there were earlier threats to his life, and it may be that your ancestor was involved in one of those earlier (attempted) actions, if in fact they ever got farther than just a threat. There was a lot of chaos and conflict in Roscommon in the 1840s. The Strokestown area had its share of it. Mary Lee Dunn
