I have an ancestor that states on census records that her father was born in Ireland. She was born in South Africa, however. The man I am seeking information about is named James McDermott. He died in 1859 in South Africa. He married Johanna Clasina Smyth/Smit. I have found information about her family in South Africa, but I have not known where to search for more information about James McDermott. I have found nothing on him in South Africa. I know that the McDermott name is common in Roscommon. Suggested birth dates for James are 1802 and 1822--quite a difference I know. His second daughter (the one I am related to) was born in 1841 so I am thinking maybe James' birth is closer to 1820. I would appreciate any guidance on finding him and his parents. Hi Grace - I just looked around in Family Search for James McDermott who died in South Africa in 1859 and everyone in the Ancestral File, the IGI, and the Pedigree Resource File there has him born about 1802 in South Africa. They may or may not be correct but now I am really intrigued by this one. They all list his father as Michael McDermott and his mother as Margaret Beirne. Beirne is one of my family names from Co. Roscommon! Michele Grace Bagwell wrote: > I have an ancestor that states on census records that her father was > born in Ireland. She was born in South Africa, however.
