Hi Ellen, Thank you very much for responding to my message. I can tell you that the Gavicans of 1812 lived in Ballyluganon townland; the parish of Boyle, and the Poor Law Union of Boyle. (I found that there are currently Gavicans living in Mockmoyne.) Of course, not completely understanding the Irish geographical divisions of land, I'm guessing that it's like towns, cities, counties and states here in the U.S. However, I believe that the BERNES and HANLYS of that era probably lived in close proximity - since these families intermarried. Cecelia HANLY (her father was Thomas Hanly) and Thomas BERNE married, and I know of only two of their children: Elizabeth (my gr-gr-grandmother) and her brother, Thomas. He was born in 1794; I believe her to be his older sister, but I have no birth date for her. Elizabeth HANLY BERNE married Thomas Gavican (also spelled Gaviken) in 1812, and I know of five of their sons: Richard (b.1818), Thomas (1822), James (1825), Edward (1827), and my gr-grandfather, Robert GAVICAN. Robert, born in 1830, emigrated to Quebec in 1847, and ended up in Boston, MA. I have acquired this information with the help of the Sacristan of St. Joseph's Church in Boyle and Griffiths Index, and with occasional help from online friends. I'm certain that the Great Famine hit them hard, for why else would a seventeen-year-old boy set out alone to cross the ocean as Robert Gavican did? I know that his brother Edward's wife died, and I don't know what happened to any of the rest of the extended family. As you know, the more you find out, the more you want to find out, and that's what I'm trying to do. Any help or suggestions would be greatly welcome. Thank you.
