Hi Everyone! My mother was born and raised in Elphin.....I'm curious if anyone else has family members from Elphin. Her maiden name was Scott and family members still reside in Elphin. Towns are much larger, townlands can be a hundred acres. That is probably why you are wondering just how many there are. take a look at www.leitrim-roscommon.com. there you will find maps of parishes (civil and religious--concentrate ont he Civil) and the townlands within the parishes. You might be able to think of the townland, in modern terms, as a suburban development located in a bigger geographical area --the town as we would think of it, or civil parish in Irish terms. Big difference is that the development of the townland would not have been as dense, even in pre=famine days. If I knew where you lived--and I am not asking you to tell--I might be able to give a more concrete example! LOL--the irish geographical units are indeed confusing. Hi Loree~ It shows how small the world has become. I loved my trip to Ireland and visiting the house where my mother was born. It's still in the family (Scott) as a working farm and is named the Palace ....generations ago there was once a a Palace in their property, and the name was carried over. Perhaps we're cousins thru marriage....lol. Tell me more about your family?
