    1. [ROSCOMMON] Book focuses on Roscommon's Ballykilcline emigrants to U.S.
    2. Hello, Roscommon Researchers,   For those who may be interested, my book which follows some of the evicted rent strikers from famine-time Ballykilcline in County Roscommon, Ireland, to their new lives in the U.S., and in particular to Rutland, VT, is now described online in UMASS Press’ Spring Catalog at http://www.umass.edu/umpress/spr_08/dunn.htm.   Its title is Ballykilcline Rising / From Famine Ireland to Immigrant America. Publication is expected in July. The book also is listed on Amazon.com for pre-orders.   While much of the story is set in Rutland, Vermont, where a number of the immigrants settled permanently or temporarily, my narrative begins in Roscommon and explores the conditions on the ground before and during the rent strike and the famine. It considers, for instance, the land system and the tradition of seasonal labor elsewhere; secret societies; basic infrastructure in communications, transportation, and banking; the use of military forces; assisted emigration; and so forth. The book also has a strong focus on about a dozen families. It draws on many primary sources in Ireland and the U.S.   >From the 1790s until 1834, Ballykilcline was part of the Mahon estate in Strokestown, where Ireland’s Famine Museum is now located.   Mary Lee Dunn      ________________________________________________________________________ More new features than ever.
