    3. Recent correspondence on Athlone brought to mind my ancestor. He was a soldier in the British Army and I know he served in Cork at some time. He married and Irish lass, but I do not know her place of birth or their date and place of marriage. Which brings me to Athlone. After he left the army they lived for a short while in Mount Talbot, Roscommon, which is not too far from Athlone. I have read that Athlone was a garrison town - would British soldiers (he was in the Royal Engineers) have been stationed there in the 1860s? Are there marriage records, although I found nothing in the Dublin GRO. Vicki

    3. Vicki I know there are extant military records available. I just don't have the references you need because I didn't keep them. They didn't apply to my own family. The military records are of course English, and as I recall from our Lists some of these are kept in London. Just where, I don't know. Information may also be gathered from Pension Lists. Lots of young Irish lads joined the English army to have a job. The PRO or Public Records Office comes to mind but, again, I did not keep the data. Why not write a short, focussed query for the List (s) you belong to and ask specifically for the URL's for such sources, in England and in Ireland?
