Hi Susan, I'll be traveling to Ireland, Roscommon area early August. Hopefully, I'll have some words of wisdom upon my return. I am grateful for any tips also. I'll be researching "Geelan" surname. I hope to travel in late Aug. and will be alone. Any thoughts appreciated! I haven't been to Ireland yet but here are some things I've learned traveling for genealogy - print off info from websites of places you plan to visit (for resource info and directions). Bring an Irish Genealogy book to read on the plane (maybe order a Canadian one for a different perspective amazon.ca)- not only can it bring up conversation with someone spotting the book in the airport - also you might find something you missed before. Double check with the churches your Irish Ancestor came to for any more info, get the obit or missing census so you have gaps in info here filled. Bring a printed report of the whole family in Ireland and the next generation. And something I found helpful on my trip to Poland, copies of death/birth record or church info that gives the places in Ireland you are working from. (At Archives make sure you declare any paper you bring in, and make sure it is allowed, and put an address label or the like on each separate piece of paper.) It made it clear that I wasn't looking on a whim, that I had solid info and had done work at home. And like always when doing on site research, a list of things you are looking for that should be accomplishable, so you don't forget in the wonder of being there. And check familysearch.org to see what you can access here, so you don't spend all your time looking through what has been microfilmed rather than the stuff you can only see there. One thing I wish I'd done before my trip to Poland, was print out the surrounding pages of my ancestors first appearance in the census, to see if those names might help lead to my family. I did contact lots of distant relatives and was able to get some more info from them just because I was going, though they hadn't been forthcoming before. But above all, even if your research flops take time to enjoy the country you are visiting. :) Ann --- Kelly Sutton <ksutton0913@yahoo.com> wrote: > Hi Susan, > > I'll be traveling to Ireland, Roscommon area early August. > Hopefully, I'll have some words of wisdom upon my return.
