Hi Joe, I saw your entry in the Roscommon list web-site. I have two BYRNE families from Ireland: 1. Patrick TOOLAN married Catherine BYRNE. They were living in Tully/Roscommon in 1865. Their daughter Mary (b. 1844) (my Great-Grandmother) migrated to Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1865 on a ship called Wallsea. 2. James BYRNE was married to Winifred ? They were both dead by 1855. Their son James BYRNE (b. about 1816 in Creeve, Roscommon) married Mary KEARNEY (b. about 1817 in Elphin, Roscommon) in about 1837. The family migrated to Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1855 on a ship called Mangerton. Their children and their respective ages in 1855 were: Michael (18), Bridget (16), John (13) (my Great-Grandfather), Catherine (11), Winifred (9) and Mary (7). I assume that Tully, Creeve and Elphin are all located close to each other. This is all of the information I have concerning the BYRNE, TOOLAN and KEARNEY families back to the point when they left Ireland. Maybe there is some connection with your BYRNE family? I hope so. I am a member of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society and The Wyong Family History Group. Regards, Tom Duckworth

Hi Loree~ Well, if you do find some Stewarts I will be the most surprised...LOL. My mother was from Ireland (Elphin) I'm not sure where my father's family was from...other than Ohio. I loved meeting my cousins and two aunts who still lived in Elphin. The original home of the Scotts is still in the family. It's owned by a first cousin and is now being used as a Day Care Center. Where do you live? I'm finding talking to fellow Irishmen and women fun and insightful. I live in New Jersey in a town names Manalapan.....about an hour south of New York City...an hour north of Philadelphia....and 30 minutes from the beach at Sea Girt. Hope to hear from you again, Richard
Hi Loree~ It shows how small the world has become. I loved my trip to Ireland and visiting the house where my mother was born. It's still in the family (Scott) as a working farm and is named the Palace ....generations ago there was once a a Palace in their property, and the name was carried over. Perhaps we're cousins thru marriage....lol. Tell me more about your family? Hi Richard, Our Muldowney family lived in the townland of Moigh (adjacent to Cootehall.) Two, maybe-brothers, John and Thomas, were leasing land at the time of Tithes, 1830s. In 1849, John's son, John (great-grandfather) immigrated to US. Married Bridget McGEE in Boston, and they moved on to Sandusky, Ohio. They only stayed there until about 1856, and then returned to Ireland. In Griffiths Valuation, John was there with the two properties that his (? father and uncle...maybe) leased in the 1830s. John and Bridget lived in a small farmhouse and raised 10 children, until 1879, when they all immigrated, and settled in Providence, Rhode Island. I *believe* great-grandpa John had these siblings, and probably more I don't know of: TIMOTHY m. BRIDGET MURRY at Cootehall, ca 1847. Proprietor of grocer (or baker) store in Cootehall. Died in Cootehall. One daughter, Mary Muldowney m. JOHN DUNN at Cootehall, 1876. THOMAS m. Frances FORRY at Cootehall, 1850. Immigrated to Sandusky, OH. Died Sandusky BRIDGET m. Owen /Eurgene MORAGHAN. They had a bunch of children baptized at Cootehall, 1840s-1860s. I believe they stayed in the Tumna area, but I've not been able to trace them. We visited Moigh, met the neighbors, and the current owners of the house who invited us to come in and feel at home. It hadn't changed much, except for the addition of a very small kitchen, a bathroom, and a little front "porch." Those additions were made probably about 1913... by the Lynch family, ancestors of the present owners. I believe but can't prove - yet - that the Lynches were related to the Muldowneys. When John Muldowney finally gave up the land in 1879, it was leased over to LAURENCE LYNCH. I have been told that he was unmarried, and that a nephew of his then had the land. When the Irish were allowed to purchase the lands they leased, it was bought by Tom Lynch. I haven't come across any Stewarts in the family. Darn! I am looking for information about an Edward BYRNE and his wife, Bridget, from Elphin (according to "History of Reedsburg and the Upper Baraboo Valley" by Merton E. Krug). I am trying to see if they are the parents of my great-grandfather, Edward Byrne, b. 1844, NY). Both of these Edward Byrnes were in Sauk or neighboring Richland Counties, WI, in the 1870s. Any ideas welcome. -----Original Message----- From: roscommon-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:roscommon-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Loree Sent: Friday, February 02, 2007 9:47 AM To: roscommon@rootsweb.com Subject: [joe] Re: [ROSCOMMON] Towns in Roscommon Our family was not far from Elphin.... in Tumna - MULDOWNEY. George at GWGEHoyt@aol.com writes: << Towns are the villages where stores, churches, etc are (Keadue, Boyle, etc.) Townlands are the places where people lived---ie. their acreage where they farmed. >> George, Just a bit of clarification..... towns and townlands are not mutually exclusive. The townland is the basic unit of land measurement, standardized as such in the 1600's. They cover all of the land area of Ireland (even rivers and the smaller lakes are divided by townland boundaries). Villages, towns and even cities are composed of townlands. My townland map for Dublin county shows an amazing mish-mash of probably a hundred or so townlands underneath the urban chaos of Dublin City <gr>). .............................................................................. ... Friends, Regarding the number of towns/townlands in County Roscommon. For those who may not know, there is a difference between towns and townlands. Towns are the villages where stores, churches, etc are (Keadue, Boyle, etc.) Townlands are the places where people lived---ie. their acreage where they farmed. The townlands had names, rather than street addresses. I read at one time that there were either 64,000 or 65,000 townlands in Ireland. My grandparents lived on the 26 acre townland of Derreenavicara. It is a mile Southeast of the Village of Keadue in the very northern tip of County Roscommon. They had no other mailing address other than Derreenavicara, Keadue, County Roscommon Ireland. Hope this provides some understanding. George
I suspect that tenants were "assisted" by the landlords. My HUNTS from Sixmilehouse, Kilbride, showed up in St Louis in the 1850 Census as a family. It was cheaper to ship them off to Canada than to keep them in Ireland. However, I have no idea of their immigration point or why they went to St Louis. Amazing that Timothy was already 50 in that census and lived to be enumerated in both versions of the 1880 US Census at the age of 96. His daughter was 82 when she broke her hip and died of hypostatic pneumonia. Her daughter, my grandmother, lived to 87 and my mother lived to 90. So, I will probably live a long life. Hi Listers Can anyone advise me on where to search for a marriage for my GGrandparents. I have the family in the townland of Dunmurraghoe Co Roscommon in 1901.Using the year of birth of the eldest child I would only be guessing when the marriage took place, possibly pre 1879. Both were Catholic and I am told townland was near Strokestown. I previously paid for a search and a certificate but was sent an incorrect record .Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kathleen Thank you for the information on townlands and parishes. I would have never known. I have printed your information out and will save it. Marcena

Just how many are there? >> Marcena, My list, based on the 1851 census, includes 3482 towns and townlands for Co. Mayo. This would have to be adjusted for the border changes among the counties of Mayo, Sligo, Galway and Roscommon in 1898, but I'd say the current number would be within a few hundred of 3482. .............................................................................. ... Marcena--be careful confusing towns with townlands. Towns are much larger, townlands can be a hundred acres. That is probably why you are wondering just how many there are. take a look at www.leitrim-roscommon.com. there you will find maps of parishes (civil and religious--concentrate ont he Civil) and the townlands within the parishes. You might be able to think of the townland, in modern terms, as a suburban development located in a bigger geographical area --the town as we would think of it, or civil parish in Irish terms. Big difference is that the development of the townland would not have been as dense, even in pre=famine days. If I knew where you lived--and I am not asking you to tell--I might be able to give a more concrete example! LOL--the irish geographical units are indeed confusing. Kathleen , PS Welcome aboard!
I just joined the list and I have seen many towns in Roscommon. Just how many are there? Marcena Ratigan, Garraghan, Drury, Canfield, Livermore, Schur, Johnson, Hatch, Didlake, Maloney, Newport, Jurey, Berle, Shakeshaft, Conolly, Cody, Huston, Coon, Turner, Hassett, Fodge, Abernethy.
When I was in Athlone I met a gentleman who showed me where the original St Peter's and Paul's was. a part of it is still there - remade. It is up on the hill on the opposite side of the road from where the current church is located.
