Hi- Wondering if anyone is researching CUNNINGHAM (John and possible bros. Richard & Michael) who was in Nova Scotia by 1740s (involved in settlement of Halifax 1749 and Lunenburg in 1750s). Recently in episode 86 of BBC 7's "A short History if Ireland in 240 Episodes", they mentioned 4 Cunningham families from Wigtownshire in SW Scotland who were given land in the James 1st plantations in 1609 in Ulster- in Co Donegal. Not much detail was given but I have been trying to find the connection from Scotland to Ireland, and think this may be a clue, however tenuous. (A nod's a good as a wink to a blind horse...) Any help appreciated. Thanks, Thompson in Canada

Hi Bill I purchased my copy from the Church of LDS.If you go on their website www.familysearch.org select ORDER/DOWNLOAD PRODUCTS (top right hand on webpage) select FAMILY HISTORY (left hand side of page) then SOFTWARE AND DATABASES then VITAL RECORDS INDEXES You should then come to a page that lists all the Vital records Indexes they have for sale. Select BVRI 2nd edition. It includes a viewer CD and 16 others for Births Baptisms and Marriages --no death and burials in a nice compact folder and only $20 US. 12.3 million records included for England Ireland Scotland and Wales Unfortunately not all but still a good buy I think Hope this is a help to you.By the way I believe this can also be ordered in some cases from you own LDS distribution centre in your own country rather than from the US. cheers Marion Message: 6 Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 16:54:18 -0400 From: wmeehan678@aol.com Subject: Re: [ROSCOMMON] ROSCOMMON Digest, Vol 2, Issue 27 To: roscommon@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <8C96ACA803656C7-8C-DB0@webmail-db21.sysops.aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Marion: where could I purchase a copy of the BVRI? Hi George I tend to agree that the record you referred to with limited information was probably just the index. I have the BVRI 2ND edition and this contains all of the LDS records that are online plus others and gives more detailed information also. On checking your Catherine Flynn record I also came across a Timothy Michael Flynn born 26th October 1873 Castlerea Co Roscommon to Timothy Flynn and Ann Moran source FHL Film 255891 I have found quite a few records that do not appear on the LDS site. The BVRI(British Vital Records Index)2nd Edition includes 107,519 births and christenings and 12,730 marriages for County Roscommon. If you would like a look-up let me know. A caution to keep exchange of data moving smoothly. Today a member of this list sicked spam cop onto us. This caused over 50 list emails so far to bounce in the last few hours. It is not fair for one subscriber to demand that 700 subscribers check in with spam cop just for the priviledge of getting uninterrupted listmail. I have take two actions that I hope will help, banned spam cop from ever posting to this list, and unsubscribed the person who sicked spam cop on us. That person is wilcome to re subscribe, but must first lose spam cop or whitelist the mailing list. I don't have time to process hundreds of bounces. Hugs to all.................you are all doing great by helping each other. Admin

Hi Leone, I have been to Roscommon in 2005. I managed to find the farm that my great grandfather Michael FLYNN was born in. They lived in Clydagh Lower. Which is the most Southern and Western tip of Roscommon, where it meets Galway and Mayo. Apart from meeting a cousin who I didn`t realise existed. I didn`t manage to do any research in Roscommon. The best place for Irish Research was Dublin. We`d been there for 4 days before we went over to Roscommon. There they have the National Library which has all the available parish registers. I can`t remember the name of the place, it`s connected to the Land Registry, which was good for Griffiths Valuation a census of land holders taken in the 1850s really useful in the absence of a proper census. And there is the General Register Office, which has all births marriages and deaths 1864 and onwards. It would be worth your while doing has we did and spending some time in Dublin before you go to Roscommon. I don`t know the actual address`s of these places, put could dig them out for you with a bit of time. Let me know if you need them. George. Friend, Civil registration in Ireland began on January 1 1864. Perhaps there were a few places that were slow in getting started but fundamentally, that was the official start date. Some of the newer time periods have a separate index. Perhaps that was what you were looking at. From the index, you would go to another film and see the actual Vital Record. (I've found them very helpful---my grandmother for example was born in June of 1867 and there was satisfying information on her.) Then after viewing the information on the Civil Record, it would be good to then see what the church record has to say. Between the two records, a person can usually get a reasonably good idea of what took place at that event. George Hoyt ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
