Here's a directory of B&Bs that you can check out. I've used it here in Tipperary and been very satisfied. Hotels in Dublin are very expensive. And it is not advisable to use a car in central Dublin - traffic is heavy, parking expensive. I know South City Dublin best. If you go to this site and enter Dublin as "County" you will get a selection of localities under a heading "towns" which are areas of south Dublin. These areas I know have good bus or frequent and reliable trains (DART - Dublin Area Rapid Transit) to the centre of the city: Ballsbridge; Donnybrook; Ranelagh; Rathfarnham; Rathmines; South Circular Road; Terenure; Blackrock; Dun Laoghaire. (these last two are further out of Dublin - about six miles and eight miles respectively) http://www.townandcountry.ie/ Richard Callanan, Currently in Carrigahorig, north of Nenagh, County Tipperary.
I usually stay at Bewley's Hotel in Temple Bar because I like being in the city center, a quick walk to the Library, the College and other attractions. The hotel is not expensive by Dublin standards; clean, surprisingly quiet for the location and very safe (I occasionally travel by myself). Check out the room first. Some of them are on the tiny side. Big continental breakfast in the adjoining Tea Shop. Drawbacks: narrow hallways, and many steps making heavy luggage a big challenge. I always take a taxi or the bus from the airport and pick up a car on my way out of town. It is hard enough just being a pedestrian in Dublin! Ellen McCarthy
We stayed in a bed and breakfast in Dublin. While we were in Ireland we stayed only in B&Bs and were delighted with all of them. We got the Irish Tourist Board book, booked our first night's stay from the airport, and booked each day when we decided where we wanted to be that night. The IRB people were all courteous and helpful, and when we return to Ireland, we'll certainly go the bed and breakfast route again. Nancy Harwood [email protected]
I do not know hotels in Dublin But while you are in Roscommon there are bed and breakfast places and farms to stay. We called Irish Tourist Board in NY and they sent all kinds of info One was booklet on farms and bed and breakfast
Karen, When we were in Dublin last summer we stayed at the Arlington Hotel, about a one minute walk from O'Connell Square/Bridge. It's about a 5 star hotel and a little expensive, but we loved it and will stay there again. Every night they have live Irish music and also the food is v/good. The hotel is within walking distance from a lot of the tourist sites. The phone # 011-353-804-9100 and the Email address is [email protected] Is this your 1st trip to Ireland? If it is, let me know, using my Email address, and I will give you some good travel hints and information for visiting Ireland. Have a safe trip and enjoy it. Recent correspondence on Athlone brought to mind my ancestor. He was a soldier in the British Army and I know he served in Cork at some time. He married and Irish lass, but I do not know her place of birth or their date and place of marriage. Which brings me to Athlone. After he left the army they lived for a short while in Mount Talbot, Roscommon, which is not too far from Athlone. I have read that Athlone was a garrison town - would British soldiers (he was in the Royal Engineers) have been stationed there in the 1860s? Are there marriage records, although I found nothing in the Dublin GRO. Vicki
Margaret, There were six Margaret Campbells listed in Brooklyn. Only one had bp of Ireland and I am guessing that would be yours. She is twenty-eight. If you think that is her I will look at the image. Hi Gail...try the "images" tab on Google. You are likely to come up with at least some photos. It is funny how Co. Roscommon isn't often included in things like videos and even tour books. I guess, compared to the dramatic coastlines, castles, and quaint villages of the rest of Ireland, it is not the most picturesque part. It doesn't seem to be the usual tourist destination. Also, see if you can get your hands on a copy of the Jan/Feb issue of Ireland of the Welcomes (a magazine). It has an article and photos about the Lake District, which includes parts of Roscommon and Leitrim. Or try www.irelandofthewelcomes.ie ...maybe they have the story posted there.
