    1. [ROSCOMMON] POWER - McLAUGHLIN - FEEHLEY - DOLAN -KINNEY
    2. mercat
    3. This is my POWER line from Roscommon, beginning with earliest known ancestors: 1. Winifred DOLAN (b. abt. 1800?) , married to ________POWER. (My family has typically traced its ancestry through the female line!) Winifred's mother was Winifred KINNEY. 2. Michael POWER b. 1 Sep 1831 in Athlone, m. 4 May 1851 in Kilkenny (after eloping on horseback), Winifred Feehley MCLAUGHLIN (b. 15 Apr 1831, don't know where). They emigrated to America (Joliet, Illinois, and environs) after the birth of at least one of their thirteen children. The family is Catholic. I have absolutely nothing more in the way of data in Ireland. If you have any ancestors from the Roscommon or Kilkenny area with any of the surnames in the subject line, I would very much appreciate hearing what you know about them. Nan Runde Rochester, NY

    3. Hi George I also have a Roscommon Flynn in my family tree.My grandmother born circa 1894 Helena Flynn. Her father was John Flynn. Family folklore has it that the Flynns originated from Co Cork(as yet I have been unable to get proof of the family's origins). Helena married my Grandfather (John Joseph Madden born Co Roscommon) in Liverpool in 1921.John Flynn is listed as a Farmer deceased on the marriage certificate. Helena.s mother's details are not known to me as yet.Helena is buried in Ford Cemetery Liverpool. The reason I hoped there may be a connection is that we were told that she was one of 11 siblings. Being Irish Catholics I know I can't assume they would have been the only Flynns with 11 children. Have you checked the 1901 census to see if your family were still in Ireland then. I would love to hear back if you have further information and think there could be a connection My email is [email protected] Regards Marion

    1. [ROSCOMMON] Cootehall (Ardcarn & Tuamna) RC Parish
    2. Ardcarn and Tumna civil parishes are in the Cootehall RC parish. In days long gone, that Roman Catholic parish was called Ardcarn & Tuamna. After emancipation, and when Catholic record keeping began in the parish, it was 1843, and the Parish Register was inscribed "Ardcarn and Tuamna" parish. I'm not sure at exactly what point or year, the parish became known as Cootehall. Possibly around the time, or shortly after a new church dedicated to St. Michael was erected in 1851 in Cootehall townland. That is still the parish church. I have pictures taken both inside and out, and will be glad to send anyone interested a digital copy. Loree Muldowney Palm Desert CA <<I'm getting mixed information on this one. Ardcarn is a civil parish, and the townland of Ardcarn is nearly 4 miles due east of Boyle town. The townland of Tumna in the adjacent eponymous civil parish, is a further 3 or 4 miles ESE of Ardcarn. Here is the problem. Tumna townland has a early, ruined church. Proabably already in that state by the mid 1800's...specifically mentions "R.C." before "Ardcarn & Tuamna (sic)". But the R.C. parish for this area would have been Cootehall, according to Brian Mitchell's "New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland" and the Irish Times website or Ardcarne R.C. parish, according to the Local.ie website. The townland of Tumna might be just south enough to lie within Mitchell's Croghan R.C. parish, which the Irish Times calls Killucan and the Local.ie website calls Killukin & Killumod. Ain't Irish genealogy fun? (Thank goodness, I don't do any).>> Loree Muldowney MULDOWNEY DNA Project Administrator, http://www.familytreedna.com/

Proabably already in that state by the mid 1800's. Ardcarn townland has an old graveyard, and an existing church, built on the site of an early monastery. The "early monastery" was probably either the small Arroasian monastery of Augustinian Canons, or the nearby Arroasian convent of nuns. But the existing church, at Ardcarn, is the Protestant parish church of Ardcarn. Your reference specifically mentions "R.C." before "Ardcarn & Tuamna (sic)". But the R.C. parish for this area would have been Cootehall, according to Brian Mitchell's "New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland" and the Irish Times website or Ardcarne R.C. parish, according to the Local.ie website. At least I spared you the history of the monastery and the nunnery !! The Discovery map of the area does show existing churches (of unspecified denomination) in the Mountprospect/Crossna area, as well as Cootehall. Other listers will be better suited to comment on this. A scan of some websites - such as Elphin Diocese - might lead you somewhere. I'm afraid we've reached the limit of my knowledge now (unless you're really interested in the early history of Ardcarn <gr>). 3. Thanks to Janet this has become a lively list! Irish research is difficult to say the least since there are so few records to access. I want to mention 2 more that are available from the LDS: the 1850s Griffith Survey and the 1820 Tithe Applotment taxes....once you have determined a townland. Thank you Janet for kicking things up here! denise _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. 1. [ROSCOMMON] Janet's records and Latin
    2. Richard Callanan
    3. Thank you Janet for all these wonderful records. A note may help for those unfamiliar with church records in Latin. Not all Irish church registers are in Latin but these obviously are. 1) The first names are translated into Latin and were not always the names in daily use or to be found in other documents. So Mary is Latinised to Maria. 2) the name of the child follows the phrase, written or understood, "I have baptised..." and therefore is in the accusative case. So Mary becomes Mariam. 3) the names of the parents are understood to follow the word "of" and therefore are in the genitive case. So Mary becomes Mariae. 4) there is also the possibility of ambiguity because just possibly the child was not called Mary but Maria! (not common among Catholics) 5) There can be a mistranslation. "Jack" is usually a version of John but the Latin "Jacobus" might be used. Jacobus is the usual translation of James! Nora, Hannah, Hanora are all usually translated as "Honora". 6) Many parish priests were highly educated including university degrees from continental Europe. Many were not. When faced with a name they did not know they would be tempted to substitute it with one they did. Richard Callanan

    3. Hello, Janet et al. ~ I too am a descendant of a Michael FLYNN. My GG grandfather, Michael P. FLYNN presumably came from Co. Roscommon. He was married to Beatrice J. LOFTUS, and their daughter, Katherine Marie FLYNN (my Ggrandmother), was born in 1888 in Clydagh, Ballinlough, County Roscommon, Ireland. Katherine came to the United States ca. 1906 where she married Austin John WALDRON. I'm not familiar with the records you have been posting, but assume that they are christening records from the Catholic church? I have been unable to find the parents of Michael P. FLYNN - what I have stated above is the extent of my knowledge (as this information was noted in my father's baby book). If anyone has information that might help, I'd very much appreciate it! 2. Janet...(or anyone else who might have info) I missed your original offer for dates, places and which information you have in Co. Roscommon. Hope you can help!!! This is exciting! I'm looking for the date of marriage (and any other information you might have) for: Thomas MURRAY born (later lived in Culliagh) btw 1808-1810 Cuileen, Ballinasloe, Co Roscommon, and Winifred KELLY born abt 1816 of Moor Parish, Cloonfad, Ballinasloe, Co Roscommon. I suspect the marriage was before 1843 when we think their first son was born. Winifred's parents were James and Mary (last name unknown) KELLY. Siblings of Winifred include: Michael, Patrick, Mary, Peter, Margaret, Thomas and William Thomas' parents were John and Judy MCDANIEL MURRAY. Siblings of Thomas include Michael and James, but there may be more. I know that most of the MURRAYs who remained in Ireland were buried in Kilbegly Cemetery if that helps. Your responses to others have been very interesting! You're terrific! Helen Fink Forbeck

    3. Hello Cheryl, It all sounds familiar to me, the problems anyway. I suppose we should take heart from another Celt, Robert the Bruce. (if at first.....) Though I was once watching a little spider casting a web, probably for about five minutes, then, from somewhere, I don`t know where a big spider came down and trussed the little beggar up for it`s next meal. Is there an omen here. I don`t know. This is me wandering off at a tangent, and not Robert the Bruce. I suppose we`ll have all the answers one day, though I`m in no mad rush to know everything, just Michael FLYNN born circa 1863 in Roscommon and Maria QUINN born circa 1861 in Tipperary or Cork, that`ll do me for now. Good Hunting. George Carter

    3. Hello Janet, Thanks for the interest, I`m hoping to crack this one soon, with a little help from my friends, as they say. I`ve been searching the 1891 census of Manchester for ages looking for him and my gt gran, I know my gt gran`s here in 1881 but seems to disappear after that along with the rest of my Irish lot. I found Michael FLYNN in 1901 but even that`s not straight forward. I recognise the address as somewhere another member of the family is later on, but would you believe it, I have two Michaels here, similar age. Regarding my gt gran Maria QUINN my mother has always insisted that she was born in Cobh or Queenstown as it was then in Cork, though a cousin later corrected her on this, telling her it was Tipperary, though he seems to have been right in other bits of information, I`m wondering whether to aim a little more south. Could you look on your disc`s to see if there any Maria QUINN`s born circa 1861 in Cork, Cobh in particular. She had sister`s Sarah and Bridget and a brother Tim that we know of. Tim is rumoured to have got mixed up with the Fenians and eventually fled to America. Nothing else known about him. Thanks once again for the help. George Carter in Whaley Bridge. 3. Hi George-Here are all of the Maria Quinns in these records, in your timeframe, remember, these are not complete. Also, a tidbit I picked up from a cousin of mine in Mayo, many immigrants were listed as being from Cork(Cobh or Queenstown), as this was where they diembarked, and therefore the ships manifests had them as being residents of Cork, when they very well were from other counties. 3. Hello George! These are the Michael Flynns I found in your timeframe--Not sure where Clygh(?) would be, but may have a way to find out-- Also, I see many Maria Quinns in your timeframe, but not in Tipperary, but may well be that Tipperary records in these CD's don't go back that far. Would be happy to send them, if you would like. I donot see a marriage of this couple in Ireland, or England, but these records are not complete.
