    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Forrest Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/728 Message Board Post: The following is a transcription of the obituary of Walter T. ROPER (b Apr 1868 - Freedom Township, Wood County, OH, d 25 Oct 1930 - Toledo, Lucas County, OH) appearing in the Wood County Sentinel Tribune on Monday, 27 Oct 1930: "WALTER ROPER WAS A SCOTCH RIDGE BOY" "Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at one P.M., at the Eggleston funeral home, East Toledo, for Walter T. Roper, 63, son of the late Thomas J. [sic] ROPER, of Scotch Ridge. Burial will be in the cemetery at the latter place. Mr. ROPER died Saturday [presumably Saturday 25 Oct 1930] at his home, No. 330 Avalon place, Toledo. Mr. ROPER was born on a farm near Scotch Ridge, attended country school, taught at Rocky Ridge, and then completed his education Valpariso, Ind. Normal school. Following his graduation from that institution he became principal of the Way street school in Toledo. In March 1901, he was appointed chief deputy collector of customs at Toledo by Col. J. C. BONNER, then collector of the port, and he continued to fill that position till two years ago when illness necessitated his retirement from the service. He was prominent in Masonic and Odd Fellow circles and stood very high in the esteem of all who knew him and his important work. He is survived by his wife and son Clifford. Besides his sister, Miss Margaret ROPER, and his brother Allen B. ROPER, of Scotch Ridge, he leaves three other brothers, Robert, of East Toledo, Hugh, of Monclova and Ross [Roswell D.], of Phoenix, Arizona." * Thanks are due to the Wood County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, which kindly furnished me with a copy of the obituary transcribed above. The Wood County Chapter may be contacted at: Wood County Chapter The Ohio Genealogical Society P.O. Box 722 Bowling Green, Ohio 43402-0722 * * * NOTE 1: Walter T. ROPER (b Apr 1868 - Freedom Township, Wood County, OH, d 25 Oct 1930 - Toledo, Lucas County, OH) is the son of Thomas B. ROPER (b 26 Mar 1842 - Lincolnshire, England, d 27 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH) and Jeanette Stewart ROPER (b Oct 1840 - Wood, OH, d 07 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH). I previously posted the obituaries of each at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=725 and http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=726 . Walter T. ROPER is the brother of Stewart Davidson ROPER (b 18 May 1885 - Wood, OH, d 12 Apr 1922 - Panama), whose obituary is posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=727 . NOTE 2: The given date of birth of Apr 1868 is taken from the 1900 Census record for Walter T. ROPER, then residing at Toledo, Lucas County, OH (Enumeration District 96). If anyone is aware of more precise information regarding the date of birth of Walter T. ROPER, please post the same as a Reply to this message. NOTE 3: I have been unable to locate a death certificate reference for Walter T. ROPER, despite the rather precise information regarding his date and place of death. If someone is aware of a specific reference or citation, please post it. NOTE 4: Walter T. ROPER's unnamed wife is presumably the Lillian B. ROPER (b Oct 1868 - IN), whom he seems to have married about 1891. Sons Forrest (b Feb 1894 - OH) and Clifford (b Oct 1895 - OH) are also shown in the 1900 Census record. Both sons Forest G., age 18, and Clifford M., age 14, are still alive at the date of the 1910 Census enumeration. NOTE 5: "Forrest ROPER" was probably named to honor a member of the family of Gertrude FORREST, who was married to Walter T. ROPER's brother Allen Baker ROPER, on 22 Oct 1897. I have found no 1920 Census record showing Forest ROPER, but I cannot locate the record for Walter T. ROPER and his family that year either. It seems clear that Forrest ROPER predeceased his father Walter, sometime between 1910 and 25 Oct 1930.
