    1. Mary ROPER(S), of New Orleans
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Dougherty, Green, Heandler Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/667.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: There is precisely ONE Mary ROPERS [sic], who was born in Ireland, shown in the United States Census residing in New Orleans in 1860. She is living in the household and would appear to be the wife of Charles ROPER, who was himself born in England. Here is the CEnsus record for that household: United States Census -- 1860 New Orleans Ward 5, Orleans Parish, Louisiana 06 Jun 1860 Line 28, Dwelling 114, Family 108, Charles ROPERS, age 34, Male, Ingineer, Born England Line 29, Dwelling 114, Family 108, Mary ROPERS, age 35, Female, Born Ireland Line 30, Dwelling 114, Family 108, Bridgett GREEN, age 18, Female, Servant, Born Ireland Line 31, Dwelling 114, Family 108, May GREEN, age 8, Female, Born Ireland Line 32, Dwelling 114, Family 108, John GREEN, age 5, Male, Born New Orleans Line 33, Dwelling 114, Family 108, P. HEANDLER, age 34, Male, Steamboatman, Born America Line 34, Dwelling 114, Family 108, Bridgitt HEANDLER, age 35, Female, Born Ireland [Image 18 of 390 at the Ancestry.com presentation of 1860 Census data for this jurisdiction] This MIGHT be the couple -- Charles ROPER and Mary Dougherty ROPER -- shown to be the parents of Charels ROPER (b 03 Jul 1863 - New Orleans, LA). It is unclear whether this is the Mary ROPER who was the Baptismal sponsor of Mary Alice CAMPBELL, but it might have been. ... Another family to scutinize more closely. * Alterantively, there was a Mary Ann ROPER, age 6, living in the household of O. ROPER, age 35, and Hannah ROPER, age 35, in the 1850 Census enumeration. Though Mary Ann ROPER was born in LA, her parents were each born in Ireland. And there was also a Mary ROPER, age 20, who was born in Ireland, residing in the household of John ROPER, age 40, who was himself born in Ireland, at the date of the 1850 Census enumeration. Also in this household are Ann ROPER, age 9, born Ireland, Owen ROPER, age 7, born Ireland, Daniel ROPER, age 3, born LA, and James ROPER, age 26, born Ireland. The sequence of the records is suggestive that James and Mary may be a younger brother and sister, or perhaps cousins, nephew and/or niece, of John ROPER rather than his children. The places of birth are suggestive that John ROPER came to Louisiana between 1843 and 1857. * In 1870, there is a Mary ROPER, age 50, born Ireland, living in New Orleans Ward 5, with presumably her son, John ROPER, age 11, born LA.
