This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Baxter Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/785.1.1 Message Board Post: The identity of Spencer ROPER's (b Jun 1841 - Suffolk, England, d aft 1930) wife Emeline appears to be Emeline BAXTER, as shown in my previous Post "Illinois Statewide ROPER Marriages from 1763-1900 BY COUNTY" (20 Apr 2005 1:38 AM GMT) at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=750 : "ROPER, L I -- BAXTER, EMELINE: BOONE COUNTY; 5/7/1873; ; 00001487" It appears to me that the "L" in the indicated index reference is a mistranscription of "S" for "Spencer". Bear in mind that Spencer ROPER was residing in Boone County, IL, with his parents Sion and Sophia ROPER, in 1860. Also, note that Spencer's name is shown as "I. Spencer ROPER" in the 1880 Census record. And note that the English Civil Registration Index shows his name as "Spencer Isaac ROPER". * Emeline BAXTER (b Jul 1842 - IL) seems to be the daughter of John and Harriett BAXTER, age 63 and 54, respectively, of Spring Township, Boone County, Illinois. She is shown as "Emaline BAXTER" in the 1870 Census enumeration.
