He is shown to have married Molly SIMS, daughter of Benjamin SIMS, on 26 Jan 1793 in Cumberland County, VA. Henry SMITH was the bondsman. Brother Randolph ROPER was witness of the marriage bond. On 05 Nov 1794, James ROPER served along with Richard HARRIS as bondsman for the marriage of Richard HARRIS and Judith SIMS, daughter of Benjamin SIMS (Molly SIMS' sister). James ROPER is shown in tax lists for 1800: 1800 tax lists: (horses,b>16,b12-16) Cumberland Co.: James Roper 1 - 2 - 0 * In 1810, James ROPER is enumerated in the Census residing in Cumberland County, VA: James ROPER: 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 1 -- 3 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 0 – 8 [Image 9 of 39] This James ROPER is shown to be age 45 or more (b bef 1766). A Charles ROPER also appears in Cumberland in the 1810 Census: Charles ROPER: 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 -- 0 – 2 [Image 10 of 39] * * * In 1820, James ROPER was enumerated in Buckingham, Nelson County, VA: James ROPER: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 0 - 3 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 2 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 2 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [Image 8 of 8] * In 1820, Charles ROPER remained in Cumberland County: Charles ROPER: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 3 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 1 - 2 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [Image 19 of 25] * There is a James ROSSER or ROSSON enumerated in Pittsylvania County, VA, in 1830: James ROSSON: 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 10 [Image 11, 12 of 196] Although this James ROSSON is shown to be age 50 to 60 (b abt 1771-80), which is CLOSE to the age range we are expecting (b bef 1766), this difference, when coupled with the absence of any slaves and the apparent displacement in location is suggestive that this is a different individual. * The BEST candidate I have located in terms of age seems to be the James ROPER residing in Simpson, Kentucky, in 1830: James ROPER: 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 6 [Image 44, 45 of 52] This James ROPER and his wife appears to be age 70 to 79 (b 1751-60). However, the trouble ascribing this James ROPER as the SAME James ROPER previously appearing in Cumberland, VA, is (a) that this James ROPER also seemed to appear in the Census in SImpson County,KY, in 1820: James ROPER: 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 1 -- 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [Image 12 of 15] and (b) this seems to be the Revolutionary WAr veterean James ROPER, of Caswell Co, NC, who was married to a Mary NEEL. Mary Neel ROPER's age is given in the 1840 Census record which shows her to be a Revolutionary pensioner at age 75 (b abt 1765). James ROPER (b Jun 1745 - Caswell, NC) died on 18 Nov 1835 at Simpson, KY. * I have NOT inspected the Census record of EVERY James ROPER in the United States in 1830, but it does NOT appear that James ROPER, son of Benjamin ROPER, was still in Virginia by the date of the 1830 Census. It seems most likely that he died, but a more thorough search of probate and deed records seems to be indicated to better understand this member of the Charles City ROPER family. * * * NOTE: There is a James ROPER incorrectly indexed as James ROGER in the 1830 Census of Henrico, VA: James ROPER: 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 1 - 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 6 [Image 5, 6 of 106] Mary ROPER, age 75, in 1840, of Simpson, KY, is shown to be a pensioner for Revolutionary War services at the date of the 1840 Census. * I would appreciate hearing from anyone with additional information and/or insight into the family of James ROPER (b bef 1766), of Cumberland.
