    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Evans Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/793 Message Board Post: The given name "Lucy" was very popular within the Charles City ROPER family for several generations after David ROPER (b 1744, d 1808). David ROPER had a daughter named Lucy ROPER who married William HEWLETT on 06 May 1797. Edward ROPER (b abt 1781 – Charles City, VA, d 09 Feb 1826 – Charles City, VA), son of David ROPER (d 1808), seems to have had at least two daughters, Lucy Ann ROPER and Mary Jane ROPER. These two are identified in a number of probate transactions following their father's death. James Ross ROPER, who appears to have been the son of Benjamin ROPER, seems to have possibly been involved in the upbringing of Edward ROPER's orphaned children, just as Edward ROPER seems to have been involved in the upbringing of the children of his uncle Benjamin ROPER (d abt 1786). [See my previous Post "Edward ROPER (b abt 1781 – Charles City, VA, d 09 Feb 1826 – Charles City, VA), son of David ROPER (d 1808)" (29 Jan 2006 9:24 PM GMT) at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=790 and Dr. L. David ROPER's page at http://www.roperld.com/rva18.htm .] William H. and Lucy WADDILL definitely seem to have been involved in the u! pbringing of Edward's children, as well. In 1850, there appears within the household of "R. W. ROPER", age 47, of Pickens, AL, a Lucy A. ROPER, age 25. It seems unlikely that this would have been Lucy Ann ROPER, daughter of Edward ROPER, as there is a transaction on 05 Apr 1826 to purchase shoes for that Lucy A. ROPER. I am inclined therefore to believe that Lucy Ann ROPER, daughter of Edward ROPER, was at least a few years old by 1826. The most obvious answer is that the Lucy A. ROPER in R. W. ROPER's household was his daughter. I am inclined to believe that R. W. ROPER was Randolph William ROPER (b abt 1803 - James City, VA, d aft 1850 - Prob AL), son of Randolph ROPER and grandson of Benjamin ROPER (d abt 1786 - Charles City County, VA). Randolph William ROPER married Martha Ann EPPES, daughter of Francis EPPES, on 18 JUL 1822 at Prince George, Virginia. [See also my Post "http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=792" (30 Jan 2006 9:21 PM GMT) at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=792 ] Randolph William ROPER seems to have had at least two other children: Erasmus ROPER (b abt 1837 - AL) and Mary Jane ROPER (b 13 May 1839 - Reform, Pickens, AL). This Lucy Ann ROPER seems to have married a John EVANS. One strong indication that this Lucy Ann ROPER is the daughter of Randolph William ROPER is the naming of John and Lucy Ann Roper EVANS' child John Randolph EVANS (b 07 NOV 1862 - MS). The date of birth of Apr 1825 is taken from Lucy Ann Roepr EVANS' 1900 Census record. The date of death is taken from a secondary source, but it appears likely to be reliable.
