This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Selden, Seldon Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/800 Message Board Post: There appears in the Virginia Gazette an ad placed by Miles SELDEN, Jr. stating: "ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS REWARD To any person that will produce to me in Richmond, or to John ROPER a little below this, a large roan horse, upwards of five feet high, 4 yers old, docked, but not branded that I remember, has been much worked, and carries the marks of the collar. This horse was missing the evening of the 21st of November, and is supposed to be stolen, is a northern bred horse, and has a very thick curled mane and foretop. MILES SELDEN, Jun." This ad appeared in the 11 Dec 1779 edition of the Virginia Gazette printed by Dixon & Nicholson at Williamsburg on Page 3, at Column 1. The ad reappeared in 18 Dec 1779 edition of the same newspaper on Page 4, at Column 1. * * * There is a Miles SELDEN shown to be a minister destined for Virginia in an entry dated 21 Jan 1752 showing application to the crown for compensation for his passge to America. * An obituary for a Col. Miles SELDEN appeared in the Richmonfd Enquirer on 24 May 1811 on Page 3. Another obituary for a Col. Miles SELDEN is shown to have been published in the Prince George Enquirer on 21 May 1814 on Page 3. It is unclear to me whetther these references are actually CORRECT with two separate obituaries almost precisely three years apart. One of these dates may be incorrect. I have NOT seen either obituary. * It seems most likely that the advertiser was Col. Miles SELDEN, Jr. (b 09 Apr 1752, d 18 MAY 1811), the son of Rev. Miles SELDEN and Rebecca CARY. This Miles SELDEN, Jr., is shown by secondary sources to have married Elizabeth ARMISTEAD on 27 MAR 1774. Secondary sources assert that Rev. Miles SELDEN (d 20 Mar 1785) was the minister of Henrico Parish from 1752 through 1776. Why Col. Miles SELDEN desired his missing horse to be delivered to John ROPER is unclear. * HAS ANYONE SEEN COL. SELDEN'S MISSING HORSE??
