ROPER, in Ashley County, AR, is most likely that of John W. ROPER: United States Census -- 1900 De Bastrop Township, Ashley County, AR 22 Jun 1900 Line 51, Swelling 556, Family 576, ROPER, William, Head, Male, Born Jan 1865, Age 35, Married 3 Yrs, Born AR, Father Born AL, Mother Born MS, Farmer Line 52, Swelling 556, Family 576, ROPER, Nancy E., Wife, Female, Born Apr 1879, Age 21, Married 3 Yrs, 1 Child, 0 Children Living, Born MS, Father Born MS, Mother Born MS [Image 54 of 71 at the Ancestry.com presentation of 1900 Census data for this jurisdiction.] You will note the precise conformance of the month and year of William ROPER's birth -- Jan 1865 -- to that of John W. ROPER. William is shown to be born in AR, albeit to parents from AL and MS. Nancy is shown to be born in MS to parents both born in MS. I believe that the "W" in John W ROPER is for "William". Also, as we shall see, WIlliam turns up at pretty much the exact location that his father James D. ROPER (b abt 1831 - SC) is last seen in the 1880 Census.
