He had just returned from attending church and the accident happened while he was engaged in unhitching his horse. It is not known whether he had a stroke or paralysis or was accidentally kicked. When found by the hired man a short time later he was laying under the hoofs of a horse in a nearby stall. This animal did not have any shoes on while the one Mr. Roper was unhitching did have and it is thought that the first named horse caused the man's death. Mr. Roper was carried to the house where it was found that he was suffering from a badly crushed skull. He was still breathing but death occured two hours later. The accident victim was a cripple. His hat and cane was found in one of the stalls and it is thought that the horse kicked him under the feet of the other horse. Charles Roper was born in Lincolnshire, England, near Ancaster and was eighty-five years old last June. When still a young man he came to the United States and had resided here for about sixty years when his death occured. Fifty-five years of this time was spent on his farm near Dowling. His wife and one son and one daughter preceeded him to the grave. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Annie FORRESTER, of Scotch Ridge, Mrs. Mary SEIFERT, of Browntown and one son, Perry P. ROPER, at home. Funeral services will probably be held Wednesday afternoon and interment made in teh Scotch Ridge cemetery." * * * Thanks are due to the Wood County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, which kindly furnished me with a copy of the obituary transcribed above. The Wood County Chapter may be contacted at: Wood County Chapter The Ohio Genealogical Society P.O. Box 722 Bowling Green, Ohio 43402-0722 * * * NOTE 1: Charles ROPER's Lucas County, Ohio, death certificate is that which seems to be dated 10 Oct 1915 and referenced Volume 1767 / Certificate No. 57888. I have NOT seen the underlying death certificate. NOTE 2: In the 1900 Census enumeration Charles ROPER [indexed as "Charles RAHER" in the Ancestry.com Index of the 1900 Census records], age 69, is shown to be residing in Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio, with son Peter, age 41. Charles ROPER is shown in this record to have been born in England in Jun 1830. Peter is shown to have been born in Ohio Jan 1859. Charles ROPER is shown to have first immigrated to America in 1856. It seems likely that "Peter" is actually Charles ROPER's son "Perry". NOTE 3: In the 1910 Census enumeration, Charles ROPER, age 78, is shown residing inthis same township in the same household with son "Perry G. ROPER", age 51 and daughter-in-law Mary, age 54. NOTE 4: In the 1880 Census enumeration, Charles ROPER, age 50, is shown to be residing in Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio, with wife Elizabeth, age 51, son Perry G., age 21, and daughters Martha J., age 13, and Mary E., age 10. Elizabeth ROPER was also born in England. In 1870, the household shows Charles, age, 43, Elizabeth, age 22, Ann L., age 13, Perry, age 11, Martha, age 3, and Mary, age 1. NOTE 5: In 1860, Charles and Elizabeth ROPER, age 29 and 31, respectively, are shown to be residing in the household of a William BRIGGS, age 62, in Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio. William BRIGGS seems to have also been born in England. CHarles and Elizabeth ROPER's children Ann, age 5, and Perry, age 1, are also residing in this household together with Samuel BRIGGS, age 26, and Matthew BRIGGS, age 22. NOTE 6: A secondary source record furnished to the IGI shows this Charles ROPER's precise date of birth as 09 Jun 1830 and identifies the wife as Elizabeth EMMITT. The marriage date is also shown as 20 Oct 1855. The children are shown to be: Lucy Anne ROPER (b 04 MAY 1857 - St George, Delaware, d 23 DEC 1920 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, Ohio ) Perry G. ROPER (b 23 JAN 1859 - Luckey, Wood County, Ohio, d 13 OCT 1929) Charles William ROPER (b 26 JUN 1864 - Wood County, Ohio, d 13 FEB 1865) Martha Jeanette ROPER (b 24 MAY 1867 - Wood County, Ohio, d 27 MAR 1882) Mary Elizabeth ROPER (b 08 FEB 1870 - Wood County, Ohio, d 13 MAY 1953) I have NOT independently verified this information. And I am NOT confident that the ascription of Elizabeth as an EMMITT is correct. NOTE 7: IGI Batch No. C025842 shows a Charles ROPER, son of Noah and Lucy ROPER, who was Christened on 08 JUL 1832 at Ancaster, Lincoln, England. The NAME and the PLACE appears to be consistent with the Charles ROPER shown in the obituary above, though Jul 1832 seems a little LATE for a Christening for a child actually born in Jun 1830. NOTE 8: Despite their geographic proximity in Wood County, Ohio, and their mutual origin in Lincolnshire, England, there appears to be no specific reason to believe that this Charles ROPER is actually related to Thomas B. ROPER (b 26 Mar 1842 - Lincolnshire, England, d 27 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH). The obituary of the latter is Posted at: "Obituary of Thomas B.
