    1. 1901 England Census Record for George and Anne M. ROPER, of Ipswich, Suffolk
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper Classification: Census Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/744.2.1.1 Message Board Post: It appears likely to me from the information you furnished that the George and Anne ROPER family you cite is the George and Anne M. ROPER enumerated in the 1901 Census of England residing at No. 64 Lady Lane, St. Matthew's Parish, Ipswich, Suffolk: Census of England -- 1901 St. Matthews Parish, North Ipswich Ward, Ipswich, Suffolk No. 166, No. 64 Lady Lane, George ROPER, Head, Married, Male, Age 38, Quay Labourer, Worker, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Anne M. ROPER, Wife, Married, Female, Age 34, House Wife, Worker, At Home, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Kate ROPER, Daughter, Single, Female, Age 19, Box Maker, Own Account, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Anne M. ROPER, Daughter, Single, Female, Age 16, Box Maker, Own Account, Born Ipswich, Suffolk George ROPER, Son, Single, Male, Age 13, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Harry ROPER, Son, Single, Male, Age 11, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Charles ROPER, Son, Single, Male, Age 9, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk William ROPER, Son, Single, Male, Age 7, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Ernest ROPER, Son, Single, Male, Age 5, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Alice ROPER, Daughter, Single, Female, Age 3, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk Bertie ROPER, Son, Single, Male, Age 1, School, Born Ipswich, Suffolk * * * It appears to me that this record also pretty tightly brackets the likely marriage year for George and Anne. The eldest child Kate appears to be age 19. Anne M. ROPER is shown to be age 34. If both of these ages are reliable, the eldest child would have been born when Anne M. ROPER was age fifteen. It seems unlikely that she would have married much earlier than age 14, so the marriage is almost certainly within a year of 1881. I believe that the 1901 U.K. Census is the most recent which has been publicly released. We should be able to find this same couple in the 1891 Census and perhaps even the 1881 Census, depending upon precisely when George and Anne married and formed their own household.
