I am very pleased to learn that there is an actual record which clears up the matter. I think it is most likely that Margaret ROPER is the daughter of Mary ROPER's brother, whose identity we haven't yet identified, but who is suggested by the counts in the Census records. As you have found, a concerted search of the records can yield some terrific clues. Have you taken a look at the Margaret ROPER shown in Joshua ROPER's 1870 Census record?
