    1. [ROPER] Male ROPER Children Born in North Carolina in the Late Colonial and Early Federal Period
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: waroper Surnames: Roper Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1920.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Within my prior post "ROPER Households in the 1790 U.S. Census for North Carolina" I summarized the ROPER households actually shown within the 1790 U.S. Census: James ROPER: ..... 1 - 0 - 2 -- 0 - 0 [Burke, NC 1790] James ROPER:..... NO DATA [Caswell, NC 1790] William ROPER:... NO DATA [Caswell, NC 1790] Jesse ROPER: ..... 3 - 2 - 7 -- 0 - 0 [Cumberland, NC 21 Apr 1791]* John ROPER: ...... 1 - 0 - 4 -- 0 - 3 [Edgecombe, Halifax, NC] Thos. ROEPER:..... 1 - 1 - 3 -- 0 - 0 [Lincoln, NC 1790] Ann ROPER: ....... 0 - 2 - 3 -- 0 - 0 [Northampton, NC 1790] James ROPER: ..... 1 - 1 - 2 -- 0 - 2 [Northampton, NC 1790] David ROPER Rev.: 1 - 1 - 5 -- 0 - 0 [Rutherford, NC 1790] Charles ROPER: ... 1 - 2 - 5 -- 0 - 0 [Rutherford, NC 1790] Meredith ROPER: .. 3 - 1 - 4 -- 0 - 0 [Rutherford, NC 1790] David ROPER Jr.: . 1 - 1 - 1 -- 0 - 0 [Rutherford, NC 1790] Each is further discussed in the cited post. * Because hardly anyone has done any actual meaningful research on ANY of these ROPER families, the identity of the children of most of these ROPER heads of household are still UNKNOWN. Instead of actually studying these families and finding data which would support an ascription, the leading ROPER family history Fictionalists have instead INVENTED various fictitious ROPER ancestors and present us with a variety of of rather incredible ascriptions. Even when the identities of the children ARE very well established by Wills or other primary records, the Fictionalists have acribed additional children and connected these ROPERs to other fictitious ancesters using a variety of fraudulent ascriptions. ONLY the children of James ROPER, of Anson, NC, Ann ROPER, of Northampton, NC, and John ROPER, of Halifax, NC, have been conclusively established. Some recent progress has been made in identifying the children of Jesse and Obedience ROPER. There is also some reason to suspect that Charles ROPER, of Rutherford, NC, might be the son of Charles and Ann Goodwyn ROPER. And one of the two David ROPERs in Rutherford, probably David ROPER, Jr., seems likely to be the Revolutionary War Veteran who settled in Pulaski, KY. Having identified the ROPER households in the prior post, I thought it might be helpful to summarize the various children which might possibly be candidates to place in these households. These are summarized below by decade: 1760-1769 o James ROPER (b abt 1766 - NC), of Burke NC [1850 Census] 1770-1779 o Thomas ROPER (b abt 1770 - NC), of Richmond, NC [1850 Census] o Green ROPER (b 23 Jul 1773 - Anson Co, NC, d 03 Apr 1855 - Hardeman Co., TN), son of James ROPER (b bef 1730, d aft 17 Aug 1781 - Anson, NC) [Will of James ROPER] o William ROPER (b abt 1774 - NC), of Smith, TN [1850 Census] o William ROPER (b abt 1774-80 - NC), son of James ROPER (b bef 1730, d aft 17 Aug 1781 - Anson, NC) [Will of James ROPER] o David Y. ROPER (b 1778 - NC?, d 01 Sep 1843 - Giles, TN) [Grave Marker for Birth Year] 1780-1789 o Thomas ROPER (b abt 1776-82), son of Richard and Ann Lewis ROPER [Will of Angelica LEWIS] o Charles ROPER (b abt 1776-82, d bef 05 Dec 1814 - Northampton, NC), son of Richard and Ann Lewis ROPER [Will of Angelica LEWIS] o Thomas ROPER (b abt 1780 - NC), of Clinton, IL [1850 Census] o John D. ROPER (b abt 1783-7 - NC), of Pulaski, KY [1850 Census; 1860 Census] o Aaron ROPER (b abt 1784 - NC), of Pickens, SC [1850 Census] o James ROPER (b abt 1786 - NC), of Monroe, TN [1850 Census] o Charles ROPER (b 23 May 1787 - NC), of Stewart, TN [1850 Census; 1860 Census] o John ROPER (b 08 Jan 1788 - NC, d Oct 1863), of Greene and Pulaski, MO [1850 Census] o George ROPER (b abt 1788-9 - NC), of Saline, IL [1850 Census; 1860 Census] 1790-1799 o Solomon ROPER (b abt 1781-95 - NC), of Burke, NC o Elijah ROPER (b abt 1792 - NC), of Burke, NC [1850 Census; 1860 Census] o Aaron ROPER (b abt 1794 - NC), of Henry, GA [1860 Census] o John Y. ROPER (b abt 1794-6 - NC), of Sumner, TN [1850 Census; 1860 Census; 1870 Census] o John ROPER (b abt 1796 - NC), of Burke, NC [1850 Census; 1860 Census] o John ROPER (b abt 1796 - NC), of Pickens, SC [1860 Census] o David ROPER (b abt 1799-1800 - NC), of Pickens, SC [1860 Census; 1880 Census] o John ROPER (b abt 1799 - NC), of Forsyth, GA [1860 Census] 1800-1809 o James ROPER (b 1800 - NC), of Lawrence, TN [1860 Census] o James ROPER (b abt 1802 - NC), of Swain, NC [1880 Census] * * * I have RERAINED from including those ROPER ancestors which seem to be wholly FICTITIOUS and which seem to serve mostly as additional protagnists in fictional accounts of the ROPER family. I also am ONLY showing those ROPERs whose existence is supported by an actual primary record and who are shown by some primary evidence to have been born in North Carolina. I would encourage those truly interested in getting the family history RIGHT to completely DISCARD the widely published fraudulent ascriptions and to simply use primary evidence, logic and some common sense to identify which children belong to each household! * * * You need not try to solve the entire puzzle. It is a valuable contribution to simply place even ONE of the children in the correct household, identifying some actual evidence to support the ascription. That someone purporting to be an expert has "guessed" at the ascription is NOT EVIDENCE, even if the purported expert is hailed as a leading Fictionalist. Evidence means a primary record that would help a person form a valid basis for a conclusion. Also, if you know of evidence of one or more additional ROPER households NOT SHOWN in the 1790 Census OR one or more additional children born before 1800 NOT identified above, please let me know so I can add these. However, I do NOT intend to include those Fictitious ROPER ancestors who seem to have been solely invented to support various fraudulent ascriptions.
