    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: fscangie Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1923.1.1.4.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: [I came to this message thread only because I was doing a search for recent posts including the name Goodwin, so have no skin in this game of identifying Ropers.] This analysis has been enjoyable to read - I appreciate the open-minded analysis and willingness to reconsider. And because of that, I want to point out that the 1790 Pendleton District SC census was actually conducted in 1791. South Carolina hadn't got its act together in time to do the census in 1790, and besides, the upper north western area was exploding with newly arrived families, so doing the census later meant larger numbers [and greater representation] for SC. At one time, the USGENWEB archives at Rootsweb had images of the "1790" manuscript version of the census. I do not have a current link, but a decade ago I downloaded the gif of the page which began "The Number of Persons within my Division, consisting of Nine Thousand Five Hundred and Sixty Eight appears in a Schedule hereto Annexed Subscribed by me this Seventeenth Day of May One Thousand Seven hundred & Ninety One "John Clark Kilpatrick, Asst to the Marshal of So Carolina...." I have studied a number of families who can be shown by other records [mostly deeds and grants] to have reached Pendleton in the first 3-4 months of 1791 - these new arrivals are listed on the "1790" census. In a couple of families, where I have solid birth dates of children, I can show that a child born between November 1790 and March of 1791 was included in the "1790" household numbers. Thus, as you continue to do your analysis, consider that the marshal probably was reporting numbers as of early 1791 rather than for late 1790.
