Author: waroper Surnames: Roper, Lyttleton Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1948/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A death notice for an "E. ROPER" is shown at page 567 of The Gentleman's Magazine aand Historical Chronicle, Vol. 85 (Dec. 1815): "Deaths 1815 July 23 E. ROPER, esq., brother of Hon. ROPER CURZON, cousin to Lord Teynham." See: http://books.google.com/books?id=ZrAUAAAAQAAJ&dq=&pg=PA567#v=onepage&q&f=false This death notice is particularly terse OMITTING the given name of the decedant and that of the mentioned Hon. ROPER CURZON. Even so, given the date of death, it seems to me that an ascription can still be made with a reasonable degree of confidence. I believe that this death notice probably pertains to Edward ROPER, son of Francis ROPER (b 25 Jan 1738, d 13 May 1793) and Mary LYTTLETON. Secondary sources show this Edward ROPER to have been born on 20 Apr 1781. He was the younger brother of Henry Francis ROPER-CURZON (b 09 May 1767, d 08 Mar 1842), who was later the 14th Lord Teynham. The 13th Lord Teynham was John ROPER (b 27 Mar 1767, d 06 Sep 1824), son of Henry ROPER (b 07 Mar 1733/4, d 10 Dec 1786), 11th Lord Teynham. Henry ROPER (b 07 Mar 1733/4, d 10 Dec 1786), 11th Lord Teynham, and Francis ROPER (b 25 Jan 1738, d 13 May 1793) were brothers, each sons of Henry ROPER, 10th Lord Teynham, and Catherine POWELL. Thus, Edward ROPER (b 20 Apr 1781) would have been brother to Hon ROPER-CURZON and first cousin to John ROPER (b 27 Mar 1767, d 06 Sep 1824), the then 13th Lord Teynham, each sharing the common grandfather Henry ROPER, 10th Lord Teynham. Since each relationship matches and the given first initial matches, I believe that we can be reasonably confident in the ascription. * * * EACH OF THE DATES GIVEN ABOVE OTHER THAN THE DATE OF DEATH OF EDWARD ROPER HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM SECONDARY SOURCES AND SHOULD BE INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED FROM PRIMARY EVIDENCE BEFORE BEING USED AS AUTHORITATIVE. THE DATES ARE SHOWN ONLY BY WAY OF REFERENCE TO THE BASIC PURPOSE OF THIS POST WHICH IS THE ASCRIPTION OF THE DEATH NOTICE TO EDWARD ROPER, AS SHOWN.
