ROPER (b 20 Dec 1813, d 15 Apr 1862 - Grant, LA). See: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Roper&GSiman=1&GScid=67322&GRid=81630956& There do not seem to be other ROPER graves within this cemetery. The genealogical information seems most consistent with the secondary information posted by some sources for a John William ROPER shown by these secondary sources to be born December 17, 1813, and to have died in 1862. These sources represent that this John William ROPER died at the Battle of Chickamauga, in Walker, Georgia. The Battle of Chickamauga was fought a year later on September 19-20, 1863. * * * The indicated year of birth is consistent with the Census record for J. W. ROPER, age 37, born South Carolina, enumerated with wife Martha and four children residing in Natchitoches Parish, LA, in the 1850 Census. Wife Martha is also shown to be age 37 and born in South Carolina. The eldest son Edward is shown to be age 16, born in South Carolina, as is daughter Mary, age 14. Daughter Francis is shown to be age 11, born in Alabama, seemingly placing this John W. ROPER in Alabama by the date of the 1840 Census. Son J.W. ROPER, age 26, is also shown to be born in Alabama. There is a Thomas OLIVER, age 26, born in Alabama, also residing within the John W. ROPER household. See: "United States Census, 1850," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCJ4-YV4 : accessed 13 Mar 2014), J W Roper, Natchitoches parish, Natchitoches, Louisiana, United States; citing family 404, NARA microfilm publication M432. Grant Parish is immediately adjacent to and East of Natchitoches Parish, separated by the Red River. Grant Parish was created from Rapides Parish in 1869 following the Civil War. The town of Montgomery is near the east bank of the Red River. * J. W. ROPER, age 46, is again enumerated within Natchitoches parish with M.E. ROPER, age 46, M. E. ROPER, age 8 (born LA), and C. A. ROPER, age 6 (born LA). See: "United States Census, 1860," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MFPW-6JL : accessed 13 Mar 2014), J W Roper, , Natchitoches, Louisiana, United States; citing "1860 U.S. Federal Census - Population," Fold3.com; p. 69, household ID 605, NARA microfilm publication M653; FHL microfilm 803414. * Martha E. ROPER, age 55, and Mattie ROPER, age 18, are also enumerated in Louisiana in the 1870 Census. "United States Census, 1870," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M877-GJ7 : accessed 13 Mar 2014), Martha E Roper, Louisiana, United States; citing p. 44, family 389, NARA microfilm publication M593, FHL microfilm 000552017. * * * Martha Elvira Holloway ROPER is shown to be interred within the Salado Cemetery, Bell County, Texas. The grave marker is modern. Photos of both this grave marker and of Martha Elivra Holloway ROPER appear at the Find a Grave site: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Roper&GSbyrel=all&GSdy=1901&GSdyrel=before&GSst=46&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GSsr=41&GRid=52960809&df=all& * * * Secondary sources suggest that this John W. ROPER is the son of Daniel ROPER and Elizabeth ADAMS and that he was born in Edgefield, South Carolina. To the the extent this is true, it seems that this John W. ROPER was the grandson of David ROPER, discussed within several recent posts. Those with a keen interest in this family might want to re-verify their assertions about the Civil War service of this John W. ROPER. While I have no specific information about his Civil War service record, it seems doubtful that this John ROPER died at the Battle of Chickamauga. Does anyone else have any information about this ROPER family? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
