The abstract of this transaction appearing at the USGenWeb McMinn County, Tennessee, site shows: "204 26 Aug 1841 JOSEPH ROPER of Shelby Co., AL to DAVID CANTRELL; land beginning near a fence or spring that WM. SMITH Sr. settled or built near to known as the Tanyard Spring." See: http://www.tngenweb.org/records/mcminn/land/pg5-67.htm * I have NOT viewed the underlying Census record. Someone with a keen interest in this family might want to obtain the images and post a complete transcription of this deed. * * * This record seems to tightly connect the Joseph ROPER enumerated in McMinn County, TN, in the 1830 Census enumeration with Joseph ROPER (b 11 Oct 1782 - VA, d 06 Sep 1864 - Columbiana, Shelby, AL). A James ROPER and a George ROPER were enumerated residing in McMinn County, TN, in the 1840 Census. The sale of the land in 1841 seems to be consistent with the possibility that Joseph ROPER might have retained ownership of this land which might have been occupied and farmed by one or more of his relatives, possibly including George Wallace ROPER (b 29 Nov 1817). Researchers may want to take a closer look at the counts for the Joseph ROPER and James ROPER enumerated in McMinn in 1830 and the James ROPER and George ROPER enumerated in 1840.
