Author: waroper Surnames: Roper, Bicknell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1857.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Frank: Had you noticed that Philip Lawson ROPER is enumerated immediately adjacent to a Linsey BICKNELL, age 25, in the 1850 Census enumeration for Blount County, AL? See: "United States Census, 1850," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11757-100508-73?cc=1401638&wc=MF2P-G5C:1031324201,1031495701,1031535401 : accessed 19 Mar 2014), Alabama > Blount > Blout county > image 116 of 176; citing NARA microfilm publication M432. * The family of James BICKNESS, age 49 born in Virginia, is enumerated on the immediately following page, together with wife Frances, age 44, born Tennessee, and five children, all born in Alabama. This seems to put James BICKNESS in Alabama by 1835. See: "United States Census, 1850," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11757-96347-86?cc=1401638&wc=MF2P-G5C:1031324201,1031495701,1031535401 : accessed 19 Mar 2014), Alabama > Blount > Blout county > image 117 of 176; citing NARA microfilm publication M432. * * * The adjacency of Philip Lawson ROPER to a BICKNELL seems to me to be unlikely to be a coincidence. This seems to me to at least vindicate carefully examining the relationships in the North Carolina ROPER family, but also serves a reminder about retracing and reviewing the primary evidence in respect of new facts to any extent that you hadn't already noticed this connection.
