This Roper was apparently son of Cherokee mother. According to oral history he had wife in TN who either died or he deserted. For several years he worked as a 'ranger" across the Cherokee reservations. Later he worked for Pinkerton Agency. In late 1890 he was in Oklahoma and finally settled in Texas where he died. His obit mentions detective work in his younger years and census indicates two marriages. I have been told that he changed his Christian names and lived with an uncle's family for a time.
