Hi My Gt Gr Grandmother was Ann ROPER, born Bradford before 1787. She married William TORDOFF in Bradford, Yorks, England on Nov 13, 1803. I have no other data on her. As far as I, believe they lived in the Wibsey/Low Moor area Is there anyone on the list have a connection? Don in Sydney, Australia
I would like to correspond with anyone researching the Roper and Capel families of the Carolinas, GA and AL. The line I am interested in following is: John Roper (15 July 1764 Brunswick Co VA - 22 Mar 1843 Marion Co SC) who married Martha Capel (10 Apr 1768 Greenville Co VA - 29 Sept 1846 Marion Co SC). They married 20 Jan 1791 in Sussex Co VA with her brother Britton Capel acting as security. Her father was William Capel. John and Martha had a son John Roper (Jr.) (21 Mar 1802 Dillon Co SC) who married Judy Capel (b ca 1808). I believe that this Judy was the daughter of Watson Capel (b ca 1780 Northampton Co NC - d 1837 Meriwether Co GA). Watson lived many years in Anson Co NC and ca 1834 migrated to Meriwether Co GA. Watson was the brother of the above named Martha and Britton Capel. My interest is in Watson's daughter Elizabeth Capel who married John C. Hinson who migrated ca 1855 from Meriwether Co GA to Marion Co Al and then to Itawamba/Lee Co MS. I would appreciate hearing from anyone connected to these folks. georgie

My Ropers are from the Charles Town, WV/Winchester, VA area and I've not heard of a Meredith (or other spelling). It's a fairly easy family group to trace and they or their descendants have stayed in the vicinity. Roper was a common name in England when ours came over in mid/late 18th century. Good luck. Joe Ann
Just to be certain that I am on the right page. There were two MEREDITH/MEREDAY ROPERS. I am desc. fr. the first one, and I believe that this is the one you are talking about also. Would you please let me know? I would LOVE to find someone to connect and work on these folks with. Hello Bob and Joyce, While I do not see a connection with my family I should let you know my similar interest. My g g grandmother was Ann ROPER, born before 1787, married William TORDOFF in Bradford, Yorks, Eng on Nov 13,1803. I also have two distant cousins with the ROPER name both of whom married TORDOFFs, they are Emma born 1857 in Bradford and Sarah born 1860. Do you know if your ROPERs originated in the Yorkshire County in England. As a matter of interest I also have a number of ROBINSONs in my family tree. Hi Beryl, Among the Roper descendants that I have tracked, I know of two Roper family members having moved to London: 1. A John Norris Roper (b. c1873 in Winterborne Whitechurch, Dorset), wife Doris, lived in Brentford, London and died there in 1943. 2. A Giles Symonds Roper (1814 - 1883), a doctor and surgeon, moved to London, St. Pancras. He probably died in Richmond, Mdx. He was there for the 1881 census. He had, to my knowledge, three daughters, but no sons. I am sure dozens of other Roper descendants from Christopher Roper migrated to London, but I have not tracked them. Have you tried L. David Roper's voluminous web-site for Roper family trees, at: www.roperld.com David is probably the world's foremost Ropers genealogist. Good luck, Beryl.
