    1. MAJOR and ROPER Proximity in America
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Major, Maier, Maior, Roper, Rooper, Anderson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/723.1 Message Board Post: It might be of some interest to ROPER genealogists that MAJOR is a name that isfound in America living adjacent to the ROPERs in Accomack/Northampton County, and in New Kent/Charles City County. Edward MAIOR, age 19, is shown amongst the passengers of the Bonaventure, James Ricrofte, Master, in January 1634/5 (see http://english-america.com/spls/635ln009.html ). John ANDERSON, age 20, and Thomas ANDERSON, age 18, were also aboard. Richard MAJOR is shown Patenting 450 acres at Nansamund River, Upper Norfolk, on 18 May 1637, within a year of Captain William ROPER's Patent in Accomack. Robert ROCKWELL's Patent of 19 August 1637 mentions 250 acres in Nansamund River, butting upon the land of Edward MAJOR, bounded by the same creek, so it appears that BOTH Richard and Edward MAJOR had settled at Upper Norfolk. John MAJOR's Patent of 30 January 1640 was for 200 acres on the northward side of Nuswattocks Creek in Northampton County. A second Patent to John MAJOR dated 4 September 1643 was for 400 acres at Nuswattocks Creek, Northampton. Obediance ROBIN's Patent of 03 December 1643 mentions 2000 acres on ye seaboard side join.g to land of Wilkins, John Major &c. Edward MAJOR's Patent of 4 October 1644 in Upper Norfolk is for 450 acres at Nansamond River, south Wt. on a creek commonly called Major's Creek. This Patent appears to have been renewed and extended by Edwad MAJOR's Nansemond County Patent of 10 February 1645. I understand that John MAJOR's Accomack Will was dated 04 Mar 1647. Stephen CHALTON and Captain William STONE (who was married to Katherine Graves ROPER's stepdaughter Verlinda STONE) were named as overseers. This Will seems to have been proved on 06 May 1648. A John MAJOR again Patents 400 acres in Northampton County "at Great Naswattocks Creek lying on the south side thereof" on 24 October 1650. As there is NO MENTION of John MAJOR's decease in 1647 or 1648, this would appear to be the Patent of a son or nephew. Richard MAJOR Patented 1,350 acres of land on Perrins Creek in New Kent on 30 June 1656. Thomas MAJOR Patented an additional 300 acres on the north side of York River on 08 October 1657. [This is NOT intended as an exhaustive discussion of MAJOR landholding in Colonial Virginia, but rahter an attempt to sketch out some of the ealy traces.] Members of the MAJOR family are thereafter found alongside the ROPER family at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent. See http://www.rootsweb.com/~vanewken/stpete_toc.html and particularly http://www.rootsweb.com/~vanewken/stpete02.html and http://www.rootsweb.com/~vanewken/stpete04.html for details. As aformentioned a child given the name Major ANDERSON is also born in this parish.

Transcribed from an image of the original by William Alexander Roper, Jr., on Sunday, 28 Nov 2004. * * * NOTE 1: Elizabeth ROPER, of Blackfriars appears to be the widow of Lantantius ROPER, the son of John ROPAR (d aft 7 May 1589), Merchant Taylor, and Louise. Lantantius ROPER’s siblings living at the date of John ROPAR’s dear included: Thomas, John, George, Humphrey, Lancelott, Elizabeth and Beatrice. Lantantius ROPER seems to have died between the date of his brother Lancelott ROPER’s Will was written (18 Apr 1646) and the date of writing of the Will of his widow (this Will) on 22 Jan 1652. NOTE 2: The reference to cousin Lancelott ROPER, of Hull, is almost certainly Lantantius ROPER’s nephew Lancelott ROPER, son of Lancelott ROPER, of Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. The elder Lancelott ROPER’s Will was dated 18 Apr 1646 and proved 05 Jun 1654. The younger Lancelott ROPER’s Will was dated 01 Sep 1656 and proved 19 Jun 1657. NOTE 3: Elizabeth ROPER, daughter of Lantatius and Elizabeth ROPER, married Ezekiel MAJOR or MAIORE: Ezechiell MAIOR m Elizabeth ROPER on 30 APR 1622 - Saint Stephan Coleman Street, London, London, England [IGI Batch No. M019662] NOTE 4: Presumably the Ezekial/Ezechiel MAJOR/MAIOR indicated is: EZECHIEL MAIORE (Chr 08 AUG 1596 - Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England), son of Ezechiel [IGI Batch No. C022092] The complete family group of children of the elder Ezechiel would appear to be: 1. Daniel MAIORE (Chr 19 OCT 1595 Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England 2. Ezechiel MAIORE (Chr 08 AUG 1596 Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England 3. Sara MAIRCE (Chr 30 JUL 1598 Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England, d 26 FEB 1601) 4. Steue. MAIOR (Chr 28 JUN 1601 Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England 5. Nathanaell MAIOR (Chr 14 JAN 1602 Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England 6. Sara MAIOR (Chr 10 OCT 1604 Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England NOTE 5: The granddaughter Anne ANDERSON almost certainly must be: Annah MAJOR (Chr 26 JUN 1625 - Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England), dau of Ezek and Elizabeth [IGI Batch No. C022092] NOTE 6: The Alexander JONES identified as brother of Elizabeth ROPER is the “Alexander Jones Merchant, of Saint John the Baptist” whose Will was Proved on 16 Oct 1661. One candidate for this JONES amongst the Baptismal records would be: ALEXANDER JONES (Chr 30 APR 1607 - Saint Ann Blackfriars, London, London, England), son of Robert [IGI Batch No. C022092] NOTE 7: One of the more remarkable discoveries in this Will for both the ROPER and the ANDERSON families is the appearance of the name Maier (Major) ANDERSON, who is identified as a son of Sylvester ANDERSON and Elizabeth MAIER/MAJOR. The name “Major ANDERSON” also appears two generations later in the Parish Register of St. Peter’s Parish, New Kent, Virginia, where a Major ANDERSON was born to a Thomas ANDERSON on 17 Mar 1717 (See http://www.rootsweb.com/~vanewken/stpete04.html ). ROPER researchers are well aware that many ROPERs can be found amongst the entries in the St. Peter’s Parish register. There is also a JONES family in this Parish and JONES and ROPERs owned adjacent tracts of land in New Kent near Warreny Swamp and Old Stage Road. * * * Copyright William Alexander Roper, Jr., 2004.

NOTE 2: The Will of Francis ROPER (“Will of Francis Rooper or Roper”), dated 01 Feb 1689 and was Proved 22 Apr 1692, is amongst the “Prerogative Court of Canterbury” holdings of the British Public Records Office and is available through the online facility of the PRO. That Will names wife “Anne”, son “John” and daughters “Mary Catherine” and “Elizabeth”. It appears that Elizabeth must have died between 1689 and 1702. A number of sources show three daughters: “Mary”, Elizabeth” and “Catherine”. It is VERY clear from BOTH the Francis ROPER and the Anne ROPER Will that a single daughter bears the name “Mary Catherine”. I will Post a transcription of the Francis ROPER Will at a future date. NOTE 3: Some secondary sources show Anne WALKER to be of Bringwood, Herefordshire, England. I am unaware of any primary authority for that assertion. Secondary sources show another son of Francis and Ann Walker ROEPR --Francis ROPER -- who died young. Secondary sources assert that John ROPER, Elizabeth and Mary Catherine ROPER all died unmarried. I am unfamiliar with any primary authority for this information, but am also aware of no contrary information. * * * Copyright William Alexander Roper, Jr., 2004.

Given that no further children were born into the family after 1651, it seems likely that John ROPER’s death was closer to 1651 than to 1658. Thomas ROPER (Chr 28 DEC 1614 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), son of Arthur 2. Arthur ROPER (Chr 27 OCT 1616 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), son of Arthur 3. William ROPER (Chr 09 OCT 1618 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), son of Arthur 4. Jane ROPER (Chr 09 OCT 1618 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), dau of Arthur 5. John ROPER (Chr DEC 1622 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), son of Arthur 6. Samuel ROPER (Chr 27 DEC 1624 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), son of Arthur 7. Jane ROPER (Chr NOV 1626 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), dau of Arthur 8. Elizabeth ROPER (Chr 13 AUG 1628 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), dau of Arthur 9. Arthur ROPER (Chr APR 1630 Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England), son of Arthur [IGI Batch No. P001601] Sara ROPER is conspicuously MISSING from this lineup and it would seem that VERY FEW of the children survived to 1651, if this is the correct Arthur ROPER family. One possibility is that the first daughter named “Jane” was subsequently renamed “Sarah” to honor some other family member and that another child was subsequently named “Jane” instead. Jane ROPER (Chr 1618) would appear to be precisely the correct age to wed Richard WINTER in 1634 (see below). NOTE 4: The relevant marriages of the children would appear to be: SARA ROPER m RICHARD WINTER on 17 APR 1634 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England SAMUELL ROPER m HELLEN TUMES on 06 JAN 1649 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England JOHN ROPER m ELIZABETH WEBB on 04 FEB 1646 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England [IGI Batch No. M001601] One secondary record shows: RICHARD WINTER m Dorothy BARTLET on 11 FEB 1642 - S Mildreds, Canterbury, Kent, England My original reading of this Will was that the named Winter children are children of Richard and Sarah Roper WINTER, but that there is a daughter, probably actually a daughter-in-law named “Dorothy”. As you will see below, the Baptismal records for the children suggests otherwise. NOTE 5: Daughters of John ROPER are identified as Katherine and Elizabeth. These would appear to be: 1. ELIZABETH ROPER (Chr 26 DEC 1646 - St Nicholas Acons, London, London, England) 2. KATHERNE ROPER (Chr 15 AUG 1648 - St Nicholas Acons, London, London, England) 3. ELIZABETH ROPER (Chr 03 APR 1651 - St Nicholas Acons, London, London, England) [IGI Batch No. P001671] Each of these is identified as a daughter of a John and Elizabeth ROPER NOTE 6: Children of Samuel ROPER seem surely to be: 1. ARTHUR ROPER (Chr 04 OCT 1649 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England) 2. KATHERINE ROPER (Chr 08 APR 1651 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England) 3. JOHN ROPER (Chr 07 OCT 1652 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England) 4. SARAH ROPER (Chr 25 AUG 1653 - Saint Margaret, Westminster, London, England) [IGI Batch No. P001601] Note that these are in the SAME parish where Arthur ROPER’s children were born and where Samuel ROPER and Helen TUMES were wed. And of these, only Arthur and Katherine, were born prior to the writing of Arthur ROPER’s Will on 09 Aug 1651. NOTE 7: Possible children of Richard and Sarah Roper WINTER are: 1. AMIE WINTER (Chr 23 AUG 1635 - Saint Gregory By Saint Paul, London, London, England, 01 SEP 1636), dau of Richard 2. RICHARD WINTER (Chr 09 JUL 1637 - Saint Gregory By Saint Paul, London, London, England, d 11 JUL 1637), son of Richard and Sara [IGI Batch No. C054261] 3. RICHARD WINTER (Chr 25 OCT 1640 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England), son of Richard and Sarah 4. SARAH WINTER (Chr 20 NOV 1642 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England, d 18 MAR 1643), dau of Richard and Sarah 5. THOMAS WINTER (Chr 30 MAR 1645 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England, d 13 NOV 1648), son of Richard and Sarah 6. ARTHUR WINTER (Chr 21 FEB 1646 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England, d 14 MAR 1647), son of Richard and Sarah 7. WILLIAM WINTER (Chr 14 JUN 1649 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England), son of Richard and Sarah 8. SARAH WINTER (Chr 03 OCT 1651 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England), dau of Richard and Sarah 9. AMY WINTER (Chr 06 NOV 1652 - St Martin Ludgate, London, London, England), dau of Richard and Sarah [IGI Batch No. C021602] ALL of these seem to fit very nicely with the Arthur ROPER Will EXCEPT that John WINTER is absent. Note that Richard and William would have been the only living children amongst this group at the date of the writing of Arthur ROPER’s Will. It is probably noteworthy that John WINTER is listed first in the enumeration of the WINTER grandchildren. He is probably the eldest and may have been born in the interval between 09 JUL 1637 and 25 OCT 1640, when this WINTER family may have been between these two parishes. But you will ALSO note that these records reflect children of a Richard and Sarah ROPER, leaving the reference to a daughter Dorothy ROPER rather perplexing. It is certainly POSSIBLE that another Daughter Dorothy married a WINTER. * * * Copyright William Alexander Roper, Jr., 2004.

So far I have seen no evidence to the contrary. I believe the Thomas ROPER who was detained for a while in the Beauchamp Tower of the Tower of London and who carved his name on the walls there, was the the same person. His detention and interrogation may have been prompted by evidence supplied by George ELLIOT the priest hunter and betrayer of Father Edmund CAMPION.

Surnames: Roper, Rooper, Collington, Colleton, Yate, Yates Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/718 Message Board Post: I have recently pointed out a fascinating thread of family connections uniting the ROPER and YATES family over several centuries which unifies ROPERs and YATES through a migration from England, to Virginia, to Maryland and then North Carolina. I have also mentioned in passing the appearance of Father John COLLINGTON in the household of Mrs. YATE in 1581 and the transportation of William YATES and George COLLINGTON to Virginia by Captain William ROPER. See my previous Posts: "YATES and ROPER Families: A Key To Understanding the Origins of the ROPERs of VA and MD" (18 Nov 2004 9:20 PM GMT) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=715 "The ROPERs of Orpington, Kent: Was Thomas ROPER of Orpington son of Wm ROPER and Margaret MORE?" (19 Nov 2004 7:14 PM GMT) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=717 Further research relating to the COLLINGTON family seems to pretty much CLINCH a concluson that Captain William ROPER, of Accomack, is of the armigerous Kentish ROPERs, and probably is the son of Christopher ROPER, 2nd Baron Teynham, and Katherine SEABORN. From previous Posts, you will know that Father John COLLINGTON was a member of the household of Mrs. YATE in July 1581 when jesuit missionary Edmund CAMPION was betrayed and captured. CAMPION's Judas was George ELLIOTT a former steward to Mr. ROPER of Orpington. I have presented evidence in a separate Post regarding the likelihood that this Mr. ROPER was Thomas ROPER, son of William ROPER and Margaret MORE. Upon reading the various accounts of the arrest of Father CAMPION, I was under the impression that the accompanying priests were not only arrested with CAMPION, but also convicted and executed. But I have now learned that this was NOT the case. Father John COLLINGTON was acquitted and SURVIVED. There is a very detailed account of his life in the Dictionary of National Biography at pages 791, 792 of Volume IV. But the name in DNB is shown as John COLLETON (1548 - 1635). John COLLETON is identified as the son of Edmund COLLETON, of Milverton, Somersetshire. I will endeavor to Post the entire published biography soon. But particularly telling regarding Father COLLETON's relationship with the ROPER family is this sentence near the end of the biographical sketch: "COLLETON spent the latter part of his life in the house of Mr. ROPER at Eltham in Kent, where he died on 19 Oct. 1635, age 87." Absent additional details regarding just WHEN Father COLLETON arrived at Well Hall, Eltham, it is unclear which Mr. ROPER is serving as his host. But a quick review of the ROPER line of that house reveals that the elder William ROPER (son-in-law to Sir Thomas MORE) died on 4 Jan 1577/1578. We know from William ROPER's DNB biography that William ROPER's son Thomas ROPER succeeded his father in his offices in 1577 and probably occupied Well Hall in advance of his father's death. I have speculated in my prior Posts that this SAME Thomas ROPER was very likely the Mr. ROPER, of Orpington, whose prior servant George ELLIOTT betrayed CAMPION. From the accounts of CAMPION's arrest it seems clear that Father John COLLETON was residing with Mrs. YATE in 1681. So it seems clear that Father COLLETON's arrival at Well Hall was much later. Thomas ROPER died on 21 Jan 1597/1598, when Father John COLLETON would have been about age fifty. It is unclear whether Father COLLETON was already in Thomas ROPER's household by the date of Thomas ROPER's death, but this also seems doubtful from a reading of Father COLLETON's biographical sketch (though he was probably an occasional visitor and guest in the great house before he came to permanently live there). COLLETON is said to have been released from the Tower of London in 1584 and was aparently exiled with seventy-one other priests. He is said to have returned from England in 1587 and thereafter lived mostly in London and Kent (which makes residence with the ROPERs during this period plausible). In 1610, he seems to have been again imprisoned at the Clink prison in Southward for refusing to take the oath of allegiance. So it would seem that Father COLLETON must have resided with the ROPERs mostly during the period after 1598 when Thomas ROPER's son William ROPER (d 02 Aug 1628) had come into possession of Well Hall, and remarkably he seems to have outlived even this latter host, as well. It is easy to see how the ROPERs, already leading Catholic recusants, and major patrons of Catholocism during the Elizabethan period would have felt particularly singularly responsible given that their former servant had betrayed Father CAMPION and caused Father John COLLETON's imprisonment. It seems hardly surprising that the elderly priest had come to live in the household of the grandson and great-grandson of Sir Thomas MORE. Here it is probably also appropriate to note that this latter William ROPER (d 02 Aug 1628) was married to Anne COTTON. Experienced ROPER genealogists will recognize the COTTON name, as the first minister of Hungars Parish, at Accomack, was Rev. William COTTON. And William COTTON married Anne GRAVES, the daughter of ancient Virginia planter Thomas GRAVES. Captain William ROPER seems to have married thirdly Katherine GRAVES, the WIDOW (NOT the daughter) of Thomas GRAVES about 1636. So we see that Captain William ROPER brought to America a George COLLINGTON at roughly the very time that Father John COLLETON was residing in the household of William ROPER (d 02 Aug 1628), of Well Hall. And COTTON was a family also already intermarried with the very William ROPER then occupying Well Hall. But there is also MORE! George COLLINGTON also serves to further unify the ROPERs of Accomack with the ROPERs of Anne Arundel, MD. While I have picked up no further evidence of George COLLINGTON in Virginia, he is shown as being transported to Maryland in 1661. And there is a stream called the COLLINGTON Branch flowing into the Patuxent River in Prince George's about three miles from the location where ROPER Branch flows into the Patuxent River in Anne Arundel. COLLINGTON Branch is here: http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=12&x=435&y=5391&z=18&w=2 http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=13&x=218&y=2696&z=18&w=2 By contrast, ROPERs RANGE, the land where William ROPER, of Anne Arundel, grazed his livestock is adjacent to the ROPERs Branch which may be found HERE: http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=12&x=441&y=5393&z=18&w=2 http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=13&x=220&y=2696&z=18&w=2 I have only just begun investigating the COLLINGTONs/COLLETONs of Maryland. It is unclear what other evidence may emerge. The YATES family also landed in Anne Arundel about the same time the ROPERs and the COLLETONs first appear there and the ROPER, YATES, and SEABORNE families are all found in All Hallowes Parish, South River, Anne Arundel. It is probably also appropriate to mention that the YATES family was intermarried with the WELLS family in Anne Arundel and in a subsequent generation we find ROPERs intermarrying with WELLS in COLLETON County, South Carolina! COLLETON County is named for Sir John COLLETON, one of the original Proprietors of Carolina. Sir John COLLETON's family seems to be from Exeter, Devonshire, England. It is unclear what relationship, if any, existed between the family of Father John COLLETON, George COLLETON, the immigrant to Virginia and Maryland, and Sir John COLLETON, the Colonial Proprietor of Carolina. This certainly bears further investigation.

Mr. ROPER was apparently the employer of one George ELLIOTT, who served as his steward and was thereby acquainted with the cook of Mrs. YATE. I have NOT yet seen any more precise identification of Mr. ROPER. The Parish registers of Orpington, Kent, show the following ROPER Christenings within Orpington Parish: Francis ROPER, son of Thomas, bapt 13 SEP 1568 Orpington, Kent, England Mabell ROPER, daughter of Thomas, bapt 19 OCT 1572 Orpington, Kent, England Luce ROPER, daughter of Thomas, bapt 11 AUG 1575 Orpington, Kent, England [see IGI Batch P008371] Thomas ROPER (21 Jan 1597/1598), son of William ROPER and Margaret MORE was married to Lucy BROWNE and is known to have had children named Francis and Mabell (amongst others). Francis ROPER, son of Thomas ROPER and Lucy BROWE is said to have been born about 1569. Mabell ROPER, daughter of Thomas ROPER and Lucy BROWE is said to have been born about 1575. The dates very closely correspond with the records given for the births of the children of Thomas ROPER, of Orpington. That a child was named "Luce", the same name as the wife of Thomas ROPER, son of William ROPER and Margaret MORE, s also highly coincidental. There are also quite a few BROWNEs in this parish. The last of the baptisms shown, that of Luce ROPER on 11 AUG 1575, also very closely corresponds to the date of death of WIlliam ROPER (d 4 Jan 1577/1578). After WIlliam ROPER's death, Thomas ROPER may have moved from Orpington to Well Hall, Eltham. Is anyone aware of any more particular identification of the "Mr. ROPER" whose former servant George ELLIOTT betrayed Father Edmund CAMPION? Is anyone aware of any other extant records which might clarify whether the Thomas ROPER, of Orpington, was actually Thomas ROPER, son of William ROPER and Margaret MORE?

Surnames: Yate, Yates, Roper, Collington, Colleton, Seaborne Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/715 Message Board Post: Captain William ROPER of Accomack, received a grant for 150 acres at Old Plantation Creek, in Accomack, on 06 Sep 1636 for the transportation of three persons: Himself, William YATES, and George COLLINGTON (COLLETON). Given the identities of the persons shown on the Patent, this WIlliam YATES seems almost certainly to be of the family of Francis YATES, of Lyford, Berkshire. Bear in mind that it was at the home of Francis YATES (then imprisoned) that jesuit priest Edmund CAMPION was discovered and betrayed fifty-five years earlier on Sunday, 16 July 1581. Amongst the residents of Lyford Grange then in residence was the Catholic priest Father John COLLINGTON/COLLETON. CAMPION was betrayed by George ELLIOTT a former steward of Mr. ROPER, of Orpington, Kent, who used his previous employment by the ROPERs and acquaintance with the YATE's family's ccok (who had apparently known ELLIOTT while in the employ of the ROPERs) as a basis for inclusion in the secret and forbidden Mass conducted by CAMPION at the YATES residence. Here we find the same families allied in an adventure to America. For details of the capture of Edmund CAMPION see http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~hadland/tvp/tvp8.htm and/or http://www.cin.org/campcapt.html . For details regarding Captain William ROPER's Patent, see: http://lvaimage.lib.va.us/cgi-bin/GetLONN.pl?first=375&last=&g_p=P1&collection=LO Patent Or you can search for it with this key reference information: William ROPER Patent Dated 06 SEP 1636 Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 375 (Reel 1) "150 acres a Small Neck of land lying between the land of John Dennis and the land of Henry Charlton." http://ajax.lva.lib.va.us/F/?func=file&file_name=find-b-clas30&local_base=CLAS30 There are three YATES Patents the same year -- those to a John YATES -- for land on the Elizabeth River on 04 May 1636 for 200 acres, on 04 May 1636 for 150 acres and on 24 Nov 1636 for 150 acres. There are a variety of other early Virginia Patents to Johanna / Joane YATES (1652, 1661), James YATES (1654, 1657, 1668, 1687) and Richard YATES (1664, 1667). These are mostly on tributaries of the Eliizabeth River and/or in Nansemond County, but there are also a couple of grants on the Rappahanock. John YATES' Virginia Patent of 04 May 1636 was in consideration of the transportation of: Mary YATES, Nicholas SEABORNE, John SEABORNE, Richard KNIGHT The second John YATES Patent of 04 May 1636 was for the transportation of: William WHEELER, tho LEAGEN??, Rich? WEST John YATES' Patent of 24 Nov 1636 was in consideration of the transportation of: John YATES, Joane YATES, Richard YATES John YATES' transportation of Nicholas SEABORNE and John SEABORNE is of enormous significance as a clue to the identity of Captain William ROPER. For some years, I have believed that the single best English candidate explaining Captain WIlliam ROPER is the William ROPER born to Christopher ROPER, 2nd Baron, Teynham, of Kent, and Katherine SEABORNE. It may also be of interest to ROPER family historians that the names YATES, ROPER, COLLINGTON, and SEABORNE reappear together in the subsequent generation at All Hallowes Parish, South River, Anne Arundel, Maryland. And YATES is also a name found on the Patent of my ancestor John ROPER, whose 1714 Patent for the plantation on the Chickahominy in Charles City County, was for the transportation of persons to include Elizabeth YATES. ROPERs from the North Carolina lines will no doubt recognize the YATES name as that of a family with whom the ROPERs intermarried during the Revolutionary period. But by that time the ROPER and YATES families seemed to have already been allied -- as Catholic recusants and early Colonists of Virginia and Maryland -- for two hundred years! I would suggest that all ROPER family historians very carefully review their records in consideration of these findings regarding the YATES and ROPER family alliance!
