ROPER, 82" "SCOTCH RIDGE, March 8. -- Mrs. Jeanette Stewart ROPER, aged 82 years, a lifelong resident of Webster township, died at her home here on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. Her death was due to pneumonia which developed about one week ago when she suffered a relapse from the flu. The deceased was first married to William PHILO at the outbreak of the Civil War. Mr. PHILO was killed on his way to the war in the historical railroad accident on the old C.H. & D. R. R. between Perrysburg and Toledo, in which a number of servicemen were killed. One son was born to the first union and died in infancy. In 1866 she married a second time to Thomas B. ROPER, who survives the wife. Mrs. ROPER was a member of the U. P. church here and held as one of the finest Christian women in this community as well as an excellent neighbor and friend. She leaves to sorrow for her passing a devoted husband and five children: Walter T., of Toledo; Margaret, at home; Robert J., of Toledo; Roswell D., of Arizona; Hugh, of west of Maumee, and Allen, at home. One son, Andrew, died in the Phillipines during the Spanish-American war, and another son, Stewart, died in the Canal zone in the government service about one year ago. Funeral services will be held from the United Presbyterian church here Saturday morning at ten o'clock. Rev. H. P. Snodgrass will have charge. Burial will be made in the Scotch Ridge cemetery." * Thanks are due to the Wood County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, which kindly furnished me with a copy of the obituary transcribed above. At the age of 23 he came to America and immediately settled at Scotch Ridge. Surnames: Roper, Hay Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/724.2.1 Message Board Post: Following my initial Post in this discussion thread, I located the Posted obituary of Margaret Hay ROPER (b 06 Oct 1910, d 21 Dec 2003). This appears to be the widow of Lyle D. ROPER, who appears likely to be the SON of Charles and Emma ROPER. See: "Obit: Margaret Hay Roper" (5 Jan 2004 5:02 AM GMT) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.hay&m=678 The RECENCY of this obituary giives us some reasonable basis for hope that the survivors named are living and could be readily located. The obituary mentions a grandsons Steve ROPER of Columbus, Ohio. This is a rather fascinating tidbit as this is precisely where Charles ROPER's brother Joseph (Joshua) ROPER had settled. I am now about 90% confident that Charles ROPER, of Grand, Day, OK, was the Charles ROPER born in Ohio to James Henry ROPER. In considering the information appearing in death certificates, obituaries and Census records, it is very important to consider the REASONS why the reliability of the information might be suspect. In the case of death certificates, information regarding a person's date and place of birth or the names of parents, etc., is typically FURNISHED to the authorities preparing the death certificate by family members. When there are few family members around (as in a case of someone surviving most of their offspring or descendents and in certain instances when a person is institutionalized), the infomration can be esspecially unrealiable. And even when there ARE relatives available who KNOW the correct information, there is a great deal of unevenness in the thorouughness and reliability of those persons who may be called upon to give this report. I am sure you are well acquainted with friends and relatives who occasionally answer quickly and fail to fully apply themselves to ascertain the actual TRUTH of information they are asked to report. SOme people just "wing it", cutting corners and giving a best guess or recollection without consulting others, while others would meticulously call around and investigate to be assured that the information was actually correct. The same is, of course, also true with respect to obituaries. So we must EXPECT that there are occasional errors, misstatements and omissions in both of these records. Census records are very often even LESS reliable. When the Census enumerator came around, the enumerator would tend to speak with whomever was available. Again, there is a high degree of variablilty associated with the competence and reliability of Census enumerators, but this variance also collides with the variability associated with the ready availabilty of the person in each household best able to correctly furnish accurate and precise information. For example, a really conscientious enumerator might arrange to RETURN another time if the head of a household or lady of the house wasn't present, while a less dedicated enumerator might simply interview the children or a friend or neighbor overseeing the children in the absence of the parents. Again, the babysitter might do a GREAT job giving the NAMES of all of the members of the family and might get the children's ages right but merely GUESS at the ages and places of birth of the parents. Or the father might get his age and his wife's age correct, while giving the children's age's erroneously. In many households, mother would probably be generally best able to give the correct information for everybody, but even then questions such as where a spouse's parents were born probably also depend on how well the person giving the information actually KNEW the parents. So in the case of an orphan or someone whose parents DIED well before the marriage, or whose parents moved ! several times, the spouse just might NOT know the correct answer. Which of course finally brings us to the matter of the ready availability of backup sources of familly history knowledge. When a family stays in the same location for several generations, there tend to be more aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. readily available to share and inculcate a general knowledge of the family history. And when a family relocates one or more times to new locations, this reenforcing network of readily available famliy connections just isn't as readily avaialble. One need look no further than the identiified birth locations of the children of Charles and Emma ROPER to see that this was a family of some migration: Illinois to Nebraska to Oklahoma over the course of a decade. And this is BEFORE the moves to Colorado and New Mexico. It is relatively easy to see how there would be an absence of family lore upon which to draw. Bear in mind as well that Frederick A. ROPER, James Henry ROPER's father died very young and the orphaned children were raised in the households of their grandfather and next the wife's second husband (BAXTER). I think that we now already have a pretty good sketch of the family trace. If we could locate one or more of the male ROPER-surnamed descendents of Charles and Emma ROPER, we could readily VERIFY the correctness of the ascription through DNA Testing. The ROPER DNA Study has already rather precisely mapped out not only the basic Y-Chromosomal markers of the earliest ROPERs in America, but also the distinguishing markers of several different ROIPER families. Decendents of David ROPER (b 1744, d 1808) have a distinctive diistinguishing 13th marker that ought to uniquely identity a contemporary descendent as a member of our family line. I do NOT believe that the Charles ROPER (b: abt 1871, Euclid, Cuyahoga, OH) born to Orlando Stewart and Marie (CHURCHILL) ROPER is going to be related. There was a Thomas ROPER (b Mar 1842 - England, d 1923 - Wood, OH) and Jeannette STEWART (b Oct 1840, d aft 1920 - Wood, OH) who resided in Wood County, OH. If I was to GUESS, I would speculate that Orlando Stewart ROPER is of this family. I am fairly confident that Charles ROPER, of Grand, Day County, OK, is going to turn out to be of OUR ROPER family, descended from David ROPER (b1744, d1808) through his son Rev. David ROPER, of Richamond and grandson Frederick A. ROPER.

My grandmother is Emma Grace (ROPER) RAISH who is their daughter (b: 10 August 1894 d: 13 May 1934). I believe the middle initial for Charles in the 1900 Oklahoma census is a D. I could have Emma (ROPER) RAISH's year of birth wrong on the records that I have. Her headstone and death certificate state she was born in 1894, however, the Oklahoma census states 1891. Her death certificate states that she was born in Chicago, IL. That fits with the Oklahoma Census. Anyway, her obituary (published in the Montrose Daily Press 14 May 1934) states she is survived by "her mother in Pueblo, a brother Earl of Cedaredge, a brother Lisle of Clayton, N.M. and a sister, Mrs. Effie Carol of Clayton, N. Mexico." (I am sure these names were misspelled) My mother has a post card dated 19 December 1938 from Pueblo, CO that I believe is from Emma Almira ROPER. Her last name is REID when the post card was written in her hand. I sent for this woman's (REID) death certificate and copies of the newspaper obituary. There is no "obituary" only a notice of her death and when the funeral will be at Mt. View Cemetery in Pueblo, Pueblo County, CO. Her death certificate states she is the daughter of Joseph WELCH born 6 September 1867 in Elkhorn, WI. Her husband at the time of death is A. J. REID. The LDS site 1880 Sugar Creek, Walworth County, WI census lists Joseph WELCH with children Emma (age 18 born in WI) and Chester (age 12 born in WI). Apparently the wife's name is not reable. Orris O. Carroll is a witness at the marriage of Emma Grace ROPER and Walter C. RAISH in Trinidad, Las Animas County, CO on 18 June 1914. My mother remembers that Emma's sister and family moved to Oregon. I have SS application for Effie Blanche (ROPER) CARROLL (b: 4 April 1893, Beatrice, Gage County, NE) applied for Social Security Number 544-38-8591 in Medford, Oregon on 23 September 1953. (The year of birth differs from the 1900 census, but so much fits???) She states her father's name Charles Delbert ROPER and mother is Emma Almira WELCH. My mother recalls Orris O. and Effie Blanche (ROPER) CARROLL may have had two children whose names are Orris and Effie also. I have not been able to track Earl ROPER or Lyle ROPER. I plan to contact the Colorado archives to see if they have a death certificate for Charles Delbert ROPER. If they don't have one, I next plan to contact New Mexico. Toni Richard TURK has submitted a great deal of information to the LDS site. The FamilySearch International Genealogical Index has a Charles ROPER (b: aboutr 1871, Euclid, Cuyahoga, OH) born to Orlando Stewart and Marie (CHURCHILL) ROPER. I don't believe this is the Charles ROPER I am seeking, but you never know. . . I will be more than happy to share any of the records I have if anyone would like copies. Emma is then shown to be Widowed. But though husband Charles is NOT present, she is shown to be married in 1910. I am trying to pick up the trail of Charles ROPER, son of James Henry ROPER (b abt 1834 - VA), of Columbus, OH. Please see my Post: "James Henry ROPER (b abt 1834 - VA), of Columbus, OH" (3 Mar 2003 8:19 AM GMT) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=461.1.1 In 1880, James Henry ROPER's son Charles ROPER, age 15, appears to be enumerated in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. (see LDS Family History Library Film 1255004, National Archives Film T9-1004, Page 51D). This is the LAST good fix I have on him. ANd I find NO Charles ROPERs born in Michigan in either the 1870 OR the 1880 Census enumeration. I am wondering if the family had the place of birth of Charles ROPER WRONG and that the Charles ROPER married to Emma might have actually been born in Ohio. His PARENTS ARE shown to be born in Ohio. Is anyone familiar with this family? Does anyone know the date and place of death of this Charles ROPER?? Does anyone know what became of Earl ROPER or Lyle ROPER?

    2. Just thought I would join the conversation. I'm also a descendant of Aaron Roper through his son Tyre. I haven't found anything about Rachel Meredith either. But I have always wondered if Aaron and Rachel were related since Aaron's father was Meredith Roper. (Always been a head scratcher for me!) My Roper line: 4th Great-Grandfather - Aaron Roper (married Rachel Meredith) 3rd Great-Grandfather - Tyre Roper (married Malinda Edens) 2nd Great-Grandfather - Elijah Roper (married Arminda Satterfield) Great-Grandmother - Ida Roper (married R.P. But then Minnie asserts that she has borne four children of which 4 are living. It is unclear whether Rosa was born by Minnie before the marriage or whether there was a misunderstanding about the nature of the question regarding how many children MINNIE had borne. * * * United States Census -- 1880 Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Ward 2 (Enumeration District 5) 14 Jun 1880 Line 3, Address 14, Family 255, Dwelling 375, BAXTER, John, Head, White, Male, Age 28, Married, Born VA, Fa Born VA, Mo Born VA, Lightning Rod Man Line 4, Address 14, Family 255, Dwelling 375, BAXTER, Fredrica, Wife, White, Female, Age 25, Married, Born OH, Fa Born Germany, Mo Born Germany, Keeping House Line 5, Address 14, Family 255, Dwelling 375, BAXTER, Florence, Daughter, White, Female, Age 4, Single, Born OH, Fa Born VA, Mo Born VA Line 6, Address 14, Family 255, Dwelling 375, BAXTER, Charles, Son, White, Male, Age 2, Single, Born OH, Fa Born VA, Mo Born VA Line 7, Address 14, Family 255, Dwelling 375, ROPER, Joseph, Nephew, White, Male, Age 20, Single, Born OH, Fa Born OH, Mo Born OH, Laborer [Image 52 of 60] * Note that the 1880 record has this Joseph as the CORRECT age, but that Joseph is shown to be born to parents who were each born in OHIO, rather than VIRGINIA. Notwithstanding, there is substantial reason to believe that this is assertion is IN ERROR. First, if you look at the record for the UNCLE, John BAXTER, you see that HIS parents were born in VIRGINIA rather than Ohio. Morover, he was born in Virginia himself. But in this case, I can do even BETTER THAN THAT for you. I bel;ieve that the Joseph ROPER you cite is the SON of James Henry ROPER (b abt 1834 - VA), the grandson of Frederick A. ROPER and Lethe A. CRAWFORD and the great-grandson of Rev. David ROPER and Mary MILLER. In particular, I would call your attention to my Post(s) "Frederick A. ROPER (b abt 1815 - VA) m Lethe A. CRAWFORD" (2 Mar 2003 1:27 AM GMT) at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=461.1 . After the death of Frederick A. ROPER, it appears that Lethe CRAWFORD remarried George BAXTER. By 1860, George and Lethe BAXTER had moved to Jefferson Township, Green County, OHIO, and James Henry ROPER is still in their household, apparently with a new wife "Moy" or "May". Joseph is shown as "Josiah" in the 1870 Census, where he may be found residing with his father James H. ROPERin Ward 4, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. By 1880, Joseph is living with his uncle. So Joseph/Josiah's Father WAS born in VIRGINIA. If "Moy/May" ROPER is Joseph's Mother, the 1860 Census record says SHE was born in OHIO (but this may be WRONG). And it appears that Joseph's mother was already deceased before 1870 (and probably closer to 1865 when his only brother Charles was born), so Joseph would have been only about age 4 when his mother died. It is NOT surprising at all that there might be some confusion as to where she was born. Joseph probably KNEW that his ROPERs and the BAXTERs were from Virginia and ASSUMED that the mother that he barely knew was from Virginia, as well. AS FREDERICK A. ROPER WAS A SON OF MY DIRECT ANCESTOR REV. DAVID ROPER, I AM VERY INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT VARIOUS DESCENDENTS OF THIS JOSEPH, OF WHOM I KNOW LITTLE ELSE. AND IF YOU ARE ACQUAINTED WITH ANY MALE ROPER-SUNAMED DESCENDENTS OF THIS JOSEPH ROPER, I AM VERY INTERESTED OBTAINING THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE ROPER DNA STUDY. WE COULD USE ANOTHER TEST SUBJECT IN MY LINE AS DISTANTLY RELATED AS POSSIBLE, AND A DESCNDENT OF JOSEPH WOULD WELL FIT THAT DESCRIPTION. Hope this helps!

    1. Campbell County ROPERs and ROSSERs
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Rosser Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/461.2.1 Message Board Post: You raise a rather fascinating question! There is much confusion between ROPER and ROSSER records, particularly in Brunswick and Campbell county. I have reached teh conclusion that MOST of the suspect ROPER/ROSSER records in Brunswick are actaully ROPERs. One MIGHT be inclined to reach a contrary conclusion in the case of Campbell County, EXCEPT for a few obscure details. First, one of the sons of my ancestor David ROPER (b 1744, d 1808) was married and died in Charlotte, VA, before 1806 but his widow Frances C. Jackson ROPER is KNOWN to have died in Campbell. They had four children. My own ancestor Benjamin Eliscus ROPER married Catharine WIthers PAYNE, of Campbell County, VA, in Clinton, Hinds County, MS, on 17 May 1843. But there is family lore that the ROPERs were already acquainted with the PAYNE family in Campbell before that. There have been a number of very ambiguous ROSYERs, ROSSIERs, ROSSERs and ROPERs living in close proximity from the mid 1600s in Accomack/Northampton, to Rosier's Creek in Northumberland, along the Rappahannock, in Fauquier County, in Prince Georges County, and then later Brunswick and Campbell. I found one ROSSER line from Prince George which traces its roots to a David ROSSER in Charles City County and at least one member of this ROSSER line seems to have qualified for the Sons of the American Revolution based upon the Revolutionary Service of that David ROSSER. But there is one very serious problem with that asserted lineage -- there WERE NO ROSSERS in Charles City County at that time and MY ANCESTOR David ROPER was the individual who furnished the supplies to the Revolutionary Army! My Charles City ROPER line is not only particularly well documented from at least the period of the 1704 Quit Rent Rolls and John ROPER's Patent of 1714, but we also have MATCHED DNA test results from two different lines of descendents of David ROPER -- the line of Rev. David ROPER and the line of Henry C. ROPER (whose family passed through Campbell, VA) -- which matched results ALSO MATCH the ROPER DNA Test results of the other branches of the Virginia, North Carolina and Massachusetts ROPER families. I have long hoped that a ROSSER test subject would come forward so that we might determine whether the ROSSERs are a genetically distinct family in Virginia or whether they were ROPERs who had lost the spelling of the family name. But I was also much more inclined to believe that the ROSSERs and the ROPERs might be the SAME family during a period when I suspected that the same might be true of North Carolina ROPERs and RAPERs. But this latter theory has now been DISPROVEN through genetic testing. (There are at least two genetically distinct RAPER families of Colonial antiquity in North Carolina.) If you are actually acquainted with or a correspondent of any Campbell ROSSERs, why dont you encourage them to participate in the Roper Y-Chromosome Testing Project: http://www.roperld.com/RoperGenetics.htm
