I am basing this assertion on the information YOU FURNISH that James Alexander ROPER's parents were a John and Hattie ROPER, precisely the names of the couple found living in the household of James and Elizabeth ROPER in 1900. So the lineage would therefore appear to be: James ROPER (b Aug 1836 - SC) m Elizabeth (b Jan 1843 - GA) John ROPER (b Nov 1882 - GA) m Hattie (b Sept 1884 - GA) James Alexander Roper (b 16 Mar 1906, d 16 Aug 1976 - Rocky Face, Whitfield County, GA) * * * There is a James M. ROPER shown in a Index of Georgia death certificates with date of death as 19 Jun 1922, who seems to have died in Walker County, GA. The certificate number is 16324-D. This MIGHT be the death certificate of James ROPER (b Aug 1836 - SC). There is also a death certificate [no county shown] in the Index of Georgia death certificates for an Elizabeth ROEPR with date of death 31 Dec 1921 and death certificate number 32346-C. This MIGHT be the death certificate of Elizabeth ROPER (b Jan 1843 - GA). James M. and Elizabeth ROPER are enumerated living with son John A. ROPER, age 28, and daughter-in-law Hattie, age 25, in the 1910 Census enumeration. Also residing with John and Hattie ROPER that year are children Emma, age 9, Myrtis?, age 6, Alex, age 4, and Gordon, age 2, all born in Georgia. John and Hattie ROPER resided in East Armuchee, Walker County, GA, at the date of the 1910 Census. In 1920, James ROPER, age 83, and Elizabeth ROPER, age 76, are again found in the household of John A. ROPER, age 38, and Hattie ROPER, age 35, in East Armuchee, Walker County, GA. Also resident in this household are daughter Mytis, age 16, son Alexander, age 13, Gordon, age 11, Mattie? Lou. age 10, Pearl, age 7, and another daughter whose name begins with "E", but whose name is otherwise difficult to make out, age 3. Since both James and Elizabeth ROPER were ALIVE in 1920, there seems to be a fairly reasonable chance that the death records identified above reflect the deaths of the same. I would encourage you to obtain these records and share with us what you find! * John ROPER (b Nov 1882 - GA) is almost certainly the John A. ROPER shown in the Georgia Death Index as dying on 02 May 1961 in Walker County at age 79. His death certificate is numbered 11613. I would encourage you to obtain a copy to discover other genealogical details, including John ROPER's precise date of birth and hopefully the full names of his parents. The Georgia Death Index shows three deaths for Hattie ROPERs: Hattie ROPER (d 07 Apr 1924 - Walker, GA) Hattie B.S. ROPER (d 26 Oct 1964 - Walker, GA), age 69 Hattie ROPER (d 26 Jul 1997 - Walker, GA), age 87 It is unclear which of these, if any, corresponds to Hattie ROPER (b Sept 1884 - GA). If her death record is one of the latter two records, the age is more than a little bit OFF. But I have OFTEN seen instances where women age less than ten years a decade and by the age of 80, a woman might have lost as many as ten year of calendar age! I am inclined to believe that the Hattie ROPER in your line is probably NEITHER Hattie B.S. ROPER (d 26 Oct 1964 - Walker, GA) nor Hattie ROPER (d 26 Jul 1997 - Walker, GA). The SSDI further clarifies for us that the Hattie C. ROPER who died on 26 Jul 1997 with last residence La Fayette, Walker County, GA, was born on 26 Jul 1910. Her SSN was 255-18-0864. And the SSDI also shows a Hattie ROPER (b 24 Apr 1894) who is said to have died in Nov 1964. Her SSN was 255-20-2613. While I believe that ages and dates of death are sometimes incorrectly stated when furnished by others after a person's death, these dates are far more likely to be correct on the original application for a Social Security Number. And even if Hattie had fudged her AGE, it seems unlikely that she would also incorrectly state the month and day of her birth. Moreover, the 1930 Census record for John A. ROPER shows him residing with a wife named "Missouri", age 45. Youngest daughter "Exa", age 13, is the only ROPER child still residing in the household. However, there are also step-children William GENTRY, age 6, step-daughters Vinnie Mae, age 18, Essie, age 13, Hessie, age 13, Nellie, age 10, John, age 8, and William age 4 1/12. It is NOT readily apparent why there is a William, age 6, AND a William, age 4 1/12, nor is it clear the significance of the ORDER these children are listed. But given that divorce was still fairly UNCOMMON in 1930, I think that we can reasonably infer that Hattie had passed away between 1920 and 1930 and that the death record for Hattie ROPER (d 07 Apr 1924 - Walker, GA) rather precisely fits this specification. * * * Finally, I would encourage you to check the ROPER Family History web site of Dr. L. David ROPER at http:www.roperld.com for additional information on various ROPER families. It seems quite likely that with the more particular information regarding the identity of James Alexander ROPER's grandparents -- James ROPER (b Aug 1836 - SC) m Elizabeth (b Jan 1843 - GA) -- you will be able to connect this family to other well established ROPER lines. I am sure that Dave would also appreciate hearing from you about the detailed information you have about the descendents of James Alexander ROPER. And I believe that all ROPER genealogists will appreciate seeing your future Posts of the more precise information you obtain when you send for the death certificates cited!

    1. Obituary of Robert G. ROPER (b 25 Oct 1918 - Toledo, Lucas County, OH, d 01 Dec 1975 - Bowling Green, Wood County, OH)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Hissem, Boosembark Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/733 Message Board Post: The following is a transcription of the obituary of Robert G. ROPER (b 25 Oct 1918 - Toledo, Lucas County, OH, d 01 Dec 1975 - Bowling Green, Wood County, OH) appearing in the Wood County Sentinel Tribune on Monday, 01 Dec 1975: "Robert Roper, ex-councilman, dies at 57" "Robert G. ROPER, a former Bowling Green City councilman and treasurer, suffered a heart attack and was dead on arrival this morning at Wood County Hospital. Mr. ROPER, 57, of 521 E. Poe Road, was the financial administrator of the Bowling Green State University Health Center. Mr. ROPER was first employed at BGSU in 1954 when he was hired as the university bursar. In November, 1967 he became the business manager of the health center. His title was later changed to that of administrator. Prior to working at BGSU, he was an office manager for the Toledo architectural and engineering firm of Bellman, Gillett and Richards. He was a city councilman for 12 years in the 1950s and the 1960s and was elected city treasurer in 1969 after being appointed to the post. His term as treasurer ended Dec. 31, 1973. Mr. ROPER served five years in the Army during World War II and was wounded in action. When discharged from the service, he held the rank of captain. He was an elder in First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge and Exchange Club, all of Bowling Green, as well as the Bowling Green High School Athletic Booster Club. He was born Oct. 25, 1918 in Toledo to Mr. and Mrs. Stewart ROPER (Beth HISSEM). He moved to Scotch Ridge as a boy and was graduated from Webster Township High School. In 1948, he received a bachelor of science degree in accounting from BGSU. Mr. ROPER moved to Bowling Green in 1940 and married Gayle Boosembark in 1941. Surviving are his wife; five sons, Christopher, Kevin, Michael, Shane and Todd; one brother, John, Woodville; one sister, Mrs. Eunice WHITE, Wyandotte, Mich., and three grandchildren. Three brothers preceeded him in death. A memorial service will be held for Mr. ROPER. The Dunn Funeral Home will announce the details of the memorial service later. * Thanks are due to the Wood County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, which kindly furnished me with a copy of the obituary transcribed above. The Wood County Chapter may be contacted at: Wood County Chapter The Ohio Genealogical Society P.O. Box 722 Bowling Green, Ohio 43402-0722 * * * NOTE 1: Robert G. ROPER (b 25 Oct 1918 - Toledo, Lucas County, OH, d 01 Dec 1975 - Bowling Green, Wood County, OH) was the son of Stewart Davidson ROPER (b 18 May 1885 - Wood, OH, d 12 Apr 1922 - Panama) and Beth Rebecca HISSEM (b Jan 1888 - NE, d 05 Mar 1970 - Wood, OH). Stewart Davidson ROPER's obituary appears in my Post "Obituary of Stewart Davidson ROPER (b 18 May 1885 - Wood, OH, d 12 Apr 1922 - Panama)" at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=727 . He was the grandson of Thomas B. ROPER (b 26 Mar 1842 - Lincolnshire, England, d 27 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH) and Jeanette Stewart ROPER (b Oct 1840 - Wood, OH, d 07 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH). I previously posted the obituaries of each at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=725 and http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=726 . NOTE 2: The obituary states that Robert G. ROPER was born in Toledo and I have shown this as his place of birth in the Subject of this Post. But I would point out that the family of Stewart ROPER was from Webster Township, Wood County, OH. By 1920, this family was residing in the Panama Canal Zone, a fact omitted from the obituary and it was here that young Robert G. ROPER is first shown enumerated in Census at age 2 (See my Post "1920 Census Record for Stewart and Beth ROPER, of Cristobal District, Panama Canal Zone" at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=727.2 ). It is clear from the Census records that the family of Stewart ROPER must have first resided in Panama during the interval from about 1910 through 1912 or 1913, as the two eldest children were born there. Moreover, I have NOT located Stewart ROPER in the 1910 Census enumeration. But by 11 Oct 1914, the date of John H. ROPER's birth, at least Beth Hissem ROPER had returned to! Ohio, where the family must have resided together until just prior to the 1920 Census enumeration. John, Walter and Robert ROPER were all born in Ohio, but the family is back in Panama at the date of the 1920 Census enumeration there: 15 Jan 1920. Thereafter, the youngest child, Richard Joseph ROPER was also born in Panama prior to Stewart ROPER's untimely death 12 Apr 1922. The family thereafter settled in Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio (See my Post "1930 Census Record for Beth Rebecca Hissem ROPER, widow of Stewart ROPER, of Webster, Wood County, Ohio" at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=727.3 ). NOTE 3: Robert G. ROPER's Ohio death certificate shows the date of death as 01 Dec 1975 and place of death as Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio. His residence at death is also shown as Bowling Green, Wood County, OH, consistent with the obituary. The death certificate is recorded in Volume 22326 with certificate number 094135. This information is taken from an abstract of the death certificate appearing in Index form. I have NOT seen the original death certiifcate. NOTE 4: The brothers who predeceased Robert G. ROPER were Walter S. ROPER (b abt 1916 - OH), who was killed during World War II, Richard Joseph ROPER (b 23 Feb 1921 - Panama, d 08 Mar 1966 - Upper Arlington, Franklin County, OH), and Thomas Baker ROPER (b abt 1911 - Panama, d 30 Aug 1968 - Toledo, Lucas, OH). The obituaries of these latter two brothers are Posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=730 and http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=731 . The surviving brother was John H. ROPER (b 11 Oct 1914 - OH, d 26 Mar 1982). The surviving sister was Eunice B. Roper WHITE (b 24 May 1912 - Panama, d 16 Apr 2000 -Wyandotte, Wayne, MI). NOTE 5: The disposition of the children is further described in the obituary of Robert G. ROPER's widow Gayle Boosembark ROPER dated 02 Mar 1992, which I will separately Post in a subsequent message.

ROPER (b Apr 1868 - Freedom Township, Wood County, OH, d 25 Oct 1930 - Toledo, Lucas County, OH) and Lillian E. PITNER is available online from the website of the Arizona Department of Health Services at http://genealogy.az.gov/search.asp . That death certificate shows that Forrest P. ROPER died on 17 Sep 1914 in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, of tuberculosis. He seems to have contracted tuberculosis about two years earlier while still residing in Ohio. Forrest's date of birth is shown only as February 20. His age is shown as 22, but this is somewhat inconsistent with the information in the 1900 United States Census, whixh shows his birth as in Feb 1894. But that same record shows him to be age 8. And Forrest P. ROPER was shown to be age 18 at the date of the 1910 Census enumeration, so this is consistent with his being age 22 in 1914 with birth year 1892. Forrest P. ROPER is shown to be the son of Walter ROPER and Lillian PITNER. The deceased is shown to have resided at 705 East Willetta Street, Phoenix. He seems to have worked in Phoenix as a Bookkeeper. He was Single at the date of his death. He is shown to have been removed from Arizona on 18 Sep 1914 following his death for for subsequent burial in Toledo, Ohio.

Census records for this family are also appended as Replies to that Post. Beth HISSEM (shown as "Bath HISSEM") is enumerated in the 1900 Census at age 12 with her Uncle Jacob P. RAPP of Chicago, IL. Her sister Blanche HISSEM (b Apr 1886 - NE) is also shown in this same record. NOTE 2: Richard Joseph ROPER's Ohio death certificate shows the date of death as 08 Mar 1966 and place of death as Franklin County, OH. His residence at death is shown as Upper Arlington, Franklin County, OH. The death certificate is recorded in Volume 18393 with certificate number 19256. This information is taken from an abstract of the death certificate appearing in Index form. I have NOT seen the original death certiifcate. NOTE 3: Richard Joseph ROPER first appears in the Census record of his mother in 1930 at age 9. ROPER (b 26 Mar 1842 - Lincolnshire, England, d 27 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH) and Jeanette Stewart ROPER (b Oct 1840 - Wood, OH, d 07 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH). I previously posted the obituaries of each at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=725 and http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=726 . Allen Baker ROPER is also the brother of Stewart Davidson ROPER (b 18 May 1885 - Wood, OH, d 12 Apr 1922 - Panama), whose obituary is posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=727 , and Walter T. NOTE 2: The Ohio death certificate seems to have the names as "Alan B. ROPER", showing date of death as 17 Feb 1959 at Bowling Green, Wood County. The death certificate also has Allen's age as 82 rather than 80. This death certificate is further identified as Wood County Ohio Volume 15699, Certificate 14740. I have NOT seen the underlying death certificate cited by this Index entry. NOTE 3: Though Allen B. ROPER is shown to reside in Center Township in the 1900 Census, he first appears in the 1880 Census residing at Freedom Township, at age 1. The family of Thomas Baker and Jeannette Stewart ROPER are previously shown to reside in Webster Township in 1870. I am inclined to believe that Allen Baker ROPER actually was born in Freedon Township. See my Post "1880 Census Record for Thomas and Jeanette Stewart ROPER, of Wood, OH" at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=725.2 for details. NOTE 4: The identified son was Gerald L.? ROPER (b Jun 1898 - Center Township, Wood County, OH). He is shown in the 1900 Census enumeration residing with his parents. He is shown again at age 11 in the 1910 enumeration residing with his parents "Allan" and "Gertrude". A Gerald A. ROPER (b 02 Jun 1898 - Pemberville, OH) is shown to have enlisted in the Army at 07 Oct 1918 with assignment at Students' Army Training Corps University of Toledo. He is shown to have had an Honorable Discharge at 10 Dec 1918. In 1930, Gerald ROPER is shown to be residing in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, with wife Catherine. They seem to have married about five years earlier (~1925). No children are shown in this household at 1930.

Mr. ROPER was born on a farm near Scotch Ridge, attended country school, taught at Rocky Ridge, and then completed his education Valpariso, Ind. Normal school. Following his graduation from that institution he became principal of the Way street school in Toledo. In March 1901, he was appointed chief deputy collector of customs at Toledo by Col. J. C. BONNER, then collector of the port, and he continued to fill that position till two years ago when illness necessitated his retirement from the service. He was prominent in Masonic and Odd Fellow circles and stood very high in the esteem of all who knew him and his important work. He is survived by his wife and son Clifford. NOTE 2: The given date of birth of Apr 1868 is taken from the 1900 Census record for Walter T. ROPER, then residing at Toledo, Lucas County, OH (Enumeration District 96). If anyone is aware of more precise information regarding the date of birth of Walter T. ROPER, please post the same as a Reply to this message. NOTE 3: I have been unable to locate a death certificate reference for Walter T. ROPER, despite the rather precise information regarding his date and place of death. If someone is aware of a specific reference or citation, please post it. NOTE 4: Walter T. ROPER's unnamed wife is presumably the Lillian B. ROPER (b Oct 1868 - IN), whom he seems to have married about 1891. Sons Forrest (b Feb 1894 - OH) and Clifford (b Oct 1895 - OH) are also shown in the 1900 Census record. Both sons Forest G., age 18, and Clifford M., age 14, are still alive at the date of the 1910 Census enumeration. NOTE 5: "Forrest ROPER" was probably named to honor a member of the family of Gertrude FORREST, who was married to Walter T. ROPER's brother Allen Baker ROPER, on 22 Oct 1897. I have found no 1920 Census record showing Forest ROPER, but I cannot locate the record for Walter T. ROPER and his family that year either. It seems clear that Forrest ROPER predeceased his father Walter, sometime between 1910 and 25 Oct 1930.

Secondary source records for Stewart ROPER have his date of birth as 08 Feb 1893. But an Index of WWI Draft registrations shows the date as 18 Feb 1892. The 1900 Census shows this Stewart ROPER as Age 7 at the enumeration date of 22 Jun 1900 with month and year of birth given as "Feb 1893". Stewart ROPER was residing with parents Horace ROPER, age 32, born Aug 1867, and Lucy ROPER, age 32, born Nov 1868, and sisters Hazel, age 8, born Jul 1891, and Christina, age 7/12?, born Oct 1900??. This afamily was then residing in Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio. Stewart ROPER, age 17, was residing with his parents, Horace ROPER, age 49, and Lucy ROPER, age 43, and brother Gaylord, age 7, in Ward 4, Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio, in 1910. Horace and Lucy Clark ROPER are shown to have been married for 28 years (~ 1882). Lucy is shown to have had fourteen (14) children, of whom only 3 are living. Horace and Lucia Clark ROPER were residing in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, at the date of the 1920 Census enumeration. Horace is then (19-20 Mar 1920) shown to be age 57, with Lucia shown to be age 52. SOns Gaylord, age 18, and Clifford, age 4, are shown to reside in this household. Stewart ROPER has left the nest. This Setwart ROPER registered for the draft at Potter County, South Dakota. I have been unable to locate this Stewart ROPER in the 1920 or 1930 Census enumerations.
