Also, Albert ROPER, age 22, is residing in the household of George W. STEPHENS, age 39. Albert is shown as a farm laborer. NOTE 4: In 1870, Dutoy ROPER and his family are enumerated in Tiptonville, District 1, Lake County, TN. Dutoy is shown as "Dutah ROPER", age 35. His wife is shown as Burnette, age 28. CHildren shown are Sloan, age 10, RObert Lee, age 6, and Amanda, age 3. All of these were born in KY, EXCEPT for Amanda, suggesting that Dutoy moved to TN between 1864 and 1867. Also living in this household are Albert PILLOW, age 19, and Joe IRVINE, age 20. Amanda WORDEN, age 35, appears to live lives next door [enumerated in adjacent record]. NOTE 5: In 1870, there are three additional households which appear to have the surname of either ROSS or ROP, which are ON THE SAME Moscow page as teh family of Elam ROPER. These households are headed by Ruben ROSS/ROP, age 48; William ROSS/ROP, age 46; and John ROSS/ROP. All were born in Tennessee. These records bear further scrutiny.

    1. One Candidate ROPER Couple -- John and Anne ROPER, of Ozark, Polk County, AR
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/706.2.1 Message Board Post: One candidate ROPER couple which might meet the specifications I set forth in the Post above is William ROPER (b Oct 1872 - MO) and Anne ROPER (b Mar 1881 - AR), of Ozark Township, Polk County, Arkansas, who are shown in the 1900 Census enumeration to have been married two years (surely Anne must have been expecting). This couple has NO CHILDREN in 1900. And I cannot find this William ROPER in the 1910 Census enumeration. * Please bear in mind that I am NOT asserting a belief that these are the parents of Freeman ROPER, but giving this couple as an illustration of the kinds of couples that might be identified for further scrutiny. It is at least convenient that the 1900 Census, which will be our most helpful online tool, give both month and year of birth. My guess is that we can find four or five similar couples in Okhlahoma, Arkansas and possibly Texas and that one of these candidate couples will ultimately proved to be Freeman ROPER's parents.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/706.2 Message Board Post: It occurs to me that it bears mention that since Freeman ROPER is the ONLY ROPER in the Samuel WILLIAMS household in 1910, it generally follows that he most likely has no YOUNGER sisters or brothers, or if he does, they are either dead or, in the case of a sister, already married. Given that Freeman is age 19, I would speculate that AT MOST he might have one surviving younger sister who is married, but even this seems unlikely. Given the regularity that children appeared in those days, I would take the absence of other younger siblings to mean that Freeman ROPER's FATHER probably died within one to three years of his birth. Moreover, if Freeman has an OLDER BROTHER, by age 19 I suspect that he would probably choose to live and work with that brother rather than with his stepfather (particularly if BOTH parents were dead). I believe that we can reasonably infer that Freeman probably had no surviving older brothers and probably had no older sister either. In short, it is probably most likely that Freeman ROPER was an ONLY CHILD, or had at most one or two sisters very close to himself in age. Again, given the regularity with which children appeared in those days, I would say that it is most likely that Freeman ROPER's father and mother married no more than one to three years prior to his birth and that his father died within one to three years after his birth. So we are looking for a ROPER couple residing somewhere near McCurtin County, OK, possibly in Arkansas, who married sometime about 1898-1900, with the ROPER father passing away by 1901-1904. * Another corrolary of these circumstances is that it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that there is going to be another ROPER who is personally acquainted with this family's situation in 2004. There aren't likely to be others descended from the ROPER we seek and the family was intact only long enough to produce Freeman ROPER!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Williams, Peoples, Groom, Petty Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/706.1 Message Board Post: Is this Freeman ROPER still living?? If not, when and where did he die? * * * I would point out that the 1910 Census record for Samuel C. and Annie WILLIAMS shows that as of 1910 Samuel was in his FIRST MARRIAGE ("M1") and Annie WILLIAMS was in her SECOND MARRIAGE ("M2"). Samuel and Annie WILLIAMS seem to have been married for FOUR YEARS by 1910 (married about 1906). But Annie WILLIAMS also showed in this same Census record that she had only THREE (3) CHILDREN of whom only TWO (2) are shown to be living. And then the record gives sons William WILLIAMS, age 3, and Sam WILLIAMS, age 2, each born in Oklahoma. So on its face, the information in this 1910 Census record seems to preclude the possibility that Annie Groom WILLIAMS is Freeman ROPER's Mother. * Also, I would take exception with your representation that Samuel C. WILLIAMS was born in Arkansas. I read the 1920 Census record as saying that Samuel was born in OKLAHOMA. Moreover, and more importantly, I read the record to say that Freeman ROPER was born in OKLAHOMA to a Father born in the US and a Mother Born in OKLAHOMA. Also, Parilee WILLIAMS, age 1, was born in Oklahoma to a Father Born in Oklahoma and Mother born in MISSOURI. It would therefore appear to me that the children Rachel PEOPLES, May PEOPLES, William PEOPLES and Mary PEOPLES are children of Frances Jane PETTY. The youngest child Parilee WILLIAMS also must be a child of Frances Jane PETTY. Samuel, Frank and Minnie WILLIAMS must be children of Samuel Cleveland WILLIAMS and Annie GROOM. It seems most unlikely that Freeman ROPER is actually a son of Samuel Cleveland WILLIAMS, bith as a consequence of the difference in surname and the fact that the birthplace of the Father is shown as "US". The person giving the information DOES NOT KNOW where Freeman ROPER's father was born. And Freeman ROPER's mother cannot reasonably be Frances Jane PETTY, as she was born in MISSOURI, but Freeman's mother was born in OKLAHOMA. * One possibility is that there might have been another intervening wife BETWEEN Annie GROOM and Frances Jane PETTY. While we are INCLINED to think that Annie Groom WILLIAMS was the mother of Frank and Minnie, the mother could also have been a heretofore unidentified intervening wife who was also born in Oklahome. You do NOT mention having a date of death (or divorce) of Annie Groom WILLIAMS. I would be inclined to tighten up this detail FIRST. Also, it would appear that Frances Jane PETTY was married to a Mr. PEOPLES at the date of the 1910 Census enumeration. Do you know the first name of Mr. PEOPLES. This would be helpful in locating a 1910 Census record AND helping to identify a date of death and possibly a Will for this Mr. PEOPLES. I would try to obtain copies of BIRTH CERTIFICATES of Frank and Minnie WILLIAMS to ascertain with a higher degree of certainty the name of their mother. And I would try to obtain a birth certificate of at least one of the PEOPLES children to determine or verify the name of the father.

Grandpa Pete (James Alexander) Roper did have siblings named Exie, Pearl, Myrdis (sp), Gordon, Mattie Lou and WH Roper. My aunt Margaret married a man by the name of Gentry, so it is possible he was related to the Gentrys mentioned. I have been in contact with Dave Roper several times as I have 2 lines of Ropers I am researching. My second line is Sarah Ann Elizabeth Roper who was my Greatgrandmother on my father's side. I have found no evidence they are related to the GA Ropers. I will post the information as soon as I talk to my mother and can it straight. Thanks again for your help.

TALLANT (b 24 Nov 1820 - Forsyth County, GA, d 01 Feb 1906 - Walker, GA) on 09 Sep 1855 * * * But I am NOT seeing how you believe your ROPER line connects from Pinkney M. ROPER (b 20 Mar 1883, d 17 Aug 1966 - Forsyth County, GA) to the PRIOR generation. You also mention a Pinckney ROPER (b abt 1863) as an ancestor. But it is unclear to me how you believe this Pinckney is connected to either Pinkney M. ROPER (b 20 Mar 1883, d 17 Aug 1966 - Forsyth County, GA) or to William Alexander ROPER (b abt 1839 - SC, d 24 Apr 1864 - GA). I would be inclined to place Pinckney ROPER (b abt 1863 - GA) as the son of John ROPER (b abt 1799 - NC) and Amy --- (b abt 1826-7 - GA). Based upon the 1860 and 1870 Census enumerations, it would appear to me that children of this couple include: Alfred ROPER (b abt 1848 - GA) Sarah A. ROPER (b abt 1854 - GA) John T. [or F.] ROPER (b abt 1858 - GA) Reuben ROPER (b abt 1859 - GA) Theresa ROPER (b abt 1861 - GA) Pinckney ROPER (b abt 1863 - GA) Larkin ROPER (b abt 1865 - GA) By 1880, this Pinckney ROPER is working on the farm of W. L. CHAMBLE and Larkin ROPER is a laborer on the farm of William PHILLIPS. * * * I would be interested in understanding what you believe your lineage to be! Incidentally, the is a ROPER DNA Project administered by Dr. L. David ROPER. It would probably be helpful to have a test subject from a ROPER-surnamed male from this family. Participation might also reveal whether the asserted lineage is actually correct.

From the ages and places of birth of the children in the 1870 Census record, we may reasonably infer that William ROPER came to Georgia from South Carolina between 1843 and 1845. Larkin ROPER (b abt Jan-Feb 1850 - Forsyth County, GA) appears in the Census records either within the household of or alongside his father in 1850, 1860, and 1870, as well. Some secondary sources show two daughters names Rosilee and Malissa. It appears to me from these Census records that this is the SAME child named Malissa Rosilee ROPER. Susan Masters ROPER is clearly already deceased by 1880. One secondary source shows her date of death as 07 Mar 1879. I have NOT verified this information, but it appeasrs to be consistent and is probably reliable.
