    3. Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in our case, to the ROPER Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the ROPER List. BUT, this means that unless the the original Board poster is also a member of the List, any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link. Of course, it would also be appreciated if you copied your reply to the List as well. Thanks. Peter ROPER List Admin. 2. Sorry, I should have mentioned this before. These marriages were in Macon County, North Carolina, and Vicy Redmond's parents were from Rabun County, Georgia. Hello, I have a marriage of Vicy Redman to James Dowell in 1848, and I have a marriage of Vicy Dowell to James Roper in 1879. In 1879 her parents were on the marriage certificate as Richard Redmon and Malinda Redmon. There have been references to Vicy Redman also being called Louisa Redman (Redmon, Redmond), who had a daughter Lucy Josephine Dowell who married Theodore C Welch. Does anyone have a source, documentation, or any information on Vicy Redman's full name? Thanks, Rick

    1. Obituary of Charles ROPER (b June 1830 - Ancaster, Lincolnshire, England, d 10 Oct 1915 - Dowling, Wood County OH)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Seifert, Forrester, Emmitt, Emmett, Briggs Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/742 Message Board Post: The following is a transcription of the Obituary of Charles ROPER (b Jun 1830 - Ancaster, Lincolnshire, England, d 10 Oct 1915 - Dowling, Wood County OH) appearing in the Wood County Daily Sentinel-Tribune on Monday, 11 Oct 1915: "HORSE KICKED MAN TO DEATH Charles Roper, of Near Dowling, Was Found Lying in Stall of His Barn With His Skull Badly Crushed -- Breathed For Two Hours After Being Carried Into House -- Was Born in England But Had Resided in America for Sixty Years Dowling, Oct. 11 -- Charles Roper, eighty-five years old, died at his home two and a half miles southeast of Dowling on Sunday afternoon [October 10, 1915] as a result of being kicked in the head by a horse. He had just returned from attending church and the accident happened while he was engaged in unhitching his horse. It is not known whether he had a stroke or paralysis or was accidentally kicked. When found by the hired man a short time later he was laying under the hoofs of a horse in a nearby stall. This animal did not have any shoes on while the one Mr. Roper was unhitching did have and it is thought that the first named horse caused the man's death. Mr. Roper was carried to the house where it was found that he was suffering from a badly crushed skull. He was still breathing but death occured two hours later. The accident victim was a cripple. His hat and cane was found in one of the stalls and it is thought that the horse kicked him under the feet of the other horse. Charles Roper was born in Lincolnshire, England, near Ancaster and was eighty-five years old last June. When still a young man he came to the United States and had resided here for about sixty years when his death occured. Fifty-five years of this time was spent on his farm near Dowling. His wife and one son and one daughter preceeded him to the grave. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Annie FORRESTER, of Scotch Ridge, Mrs. Mary SEIFERT, of Browntown and one son, Perry P. ROPER, at home. Funeral services will probably be held Wednesday afternoon and interment made in teh Scotch Ridge cemetery." * * * Thanks are due to the Wood County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, which kindly furnished me with a copy of the obituary transcribed above. The Wood County Chapter may be contacted at: Wood County Chapter The Ohio Genealogical Society P.O. Box 722 Bowling Green, Ohio 43402-0722 * * * NOTE 1: Charles ROPER's Lucas County, Ohio, death certificate is that which seems to be dated 10 Oct 1915 and referenced Volume 1767 / Certificate No. 57888. I have NOT seen the underlying death certificate. NOTE 2: In the 1900 Census enumeration Charles ROPER [indexed as "Charles RAHER" in the Ancestry.com Index of the 1900 Census records], age 69, is shown to be residing in Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio, with son Peter, age 41. Charles ROPER is shown in this record to have been born in England in Jun 1830. Peter is shown to have been born in Ohio Jan 1859. Charles ROPER is shown to have first immigrated to America in 1856. It seems likely that "Peter" is actually Charles ROPER's son "Perry". NOTE 3: In the 1910 Census enumeration, Charles ROPER, age 78, is shown residing inthis same township in the same household with son "Perry G. ROPER", age 51 and daughter-in-law Mary, age 54. NOTE 4: In the 1880 Census enumeration, Charles ROPER, age 50, is shown to be residing in Webster Township, Wood County, Ohio, with wife Elizabeth, age 51, son Perry G., age 21, and daughters Martha J., age 13, and Mary E., age 10. Elizabeth ROPER was also born in England. In 1870, the household shows Charles, age, 43, Elizabeth, age 22, Ann L., age 13, Perry, age 11, Martha, age 3, and Mary, age 1. NOTE 5: In 1860, Charles and Elizabeth ROPER, age 29 and 31, respectively, are shown to be residing in the household of a William BRIGGS, age 62, in Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio. William BRIGGS seems to have also been born in England. CHarles and Elizabeth ROPER's children Ann, age 5, and Perry, age 1, are also residing in this household together with Samuel BRIGGS, age 26, and Matthew BRIGGS, age 22. NOTE 6: A secondary source record furnished to the IGI shows this Charles ROPER's precise date of birth as 09 Jun 1830 and identifies the wife as Elizabeth EMMITT. The marriage date is also shown as 20 Oct 1855. The children are shown to be: Lucy Anne ROPER (b 04 MAY 1857 - St George, Delaware, d 23 DEC 1920 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, Ohio ) Perry G. ROPER (b 23 JAN 1859 - Luckey, Wood County, Ohio, d 13 OCT 1929) Charles William ROPER (b 26 JUN 1864 - Wood County, Ohio, d 13 FEB 1865) Martha Jeanette ROPER (b 24 MAY 1867 - Wood County, Ohio, d 27 MAR 1882) Mary Elizabeth ROPER (b 08 FEB 1870 - Wood County, Ohio, d 13 MAY 1953) I have NOT independently verified this information. And I am NOT confident that the ascription of Elizabeth as an EMMITT is correct. NOTE 7: IGI Batch No. C025842 shows a Charles ROPER, son of Noah and Lucy ROPER, who was Christened on 08 JUL 1832 at Ancaster, Lincoln, England. The NAME and the PLACE appears to be consistent with the Charles ROPER shown in the obituary above, though Jul 1832 seems a little LATE for a Christening for a child actually born in Jun 1830. NOTE 8: Despite their geographic proximity in Wood County, Ohio, and their mutual origin in Lincolnshire, England, there appears to be no specific reason to believe that this Charles ROPER is actually related to Thomas B. ROPER (b 26 Mar 1842 - Lincolnshire, England, d 27 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH). The obituary of the latter is Posted at: "Obituary of Thomas B. ROPER (b 26 Mar 1842 - Lincolnshire, England, d 27 Mar 1923 - Scotch Ridge, Wood County, OH)" http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=725

    2. In a message dated 1/25/2005 7:50:18 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Roper, William (born in Pickens Co, S.C.) age 87 years [no birth date] 7 Feb 1892 Roper, Susan; Age 79 years [died] 7 Mar 1879 * * * * * Please note that William ROPER's given age of 87 implies a year of birth of about 1805 rather than the implicit year of 1808 taken from the age given in the 1850 Census. Susan Masters ROPER would seem to have been born about 1800 if the information on the burial marker is trustworthy, making her again somewhat older than is shown in the 1850 Census enumeration. Of course, this PRESUMES that the ages given on the cemetery burial markers are reliable. * For comparison, William amd Susan ROPER are shown to both be age 41 in the 1850 Census [at 12 Aug 1850]; age 51 in the 1860 Census enumeration [at 2 Jun 1860]; aged 61 and 62, respectively, at the date of the 1870 Census [at 12 Aug 1870]; and William ROPER is age 72 in the 1880 Census enumeration [at 18 Jun 1880]. These are rather remarkably consistent Census records. The consistency is suggestive to me that the information given in the Census is more likely to be correct. In 1880, William ROPER is shown to have been born in Georgia to parents both born in Georgia. That year, he is residing with Larkin ROPER, age 30. By contrast, in each previous Census, both William and Susan Masters ROPER are shown to have been born in South Carolina. So in this final Census enumeration, William ROPER had aged an additional year and his birthplace was forgotten. Hi, William, thanks for posting this to the list. I've been to this cemetery but was looking only for the TALLANTs buried there. After we left, we were told the ROPERs were there, too. Could I ask you to please put Masters as ("possibly Masters"), rather than Susan Masters Roper. Elizabeth Roper was on the 1850 census with them and was old enough to have been Susan's mother, but it's just as possible (especially with my family) that a widowed aunt or a mother who had been married twice was living with them. So anytime I use William and Susan Roper, I use "William and Susan (poss. Masters) Roper. It's to show there is some doubt. Newcomers might not realize the maiden name has not been definitely established and there grows another error, perpetuated in cyberspace and in people's minds. I have a problem in another line. A newby cuzzie used the term "Doe" for an unknown maiden name...as in Jane Doe. I have told people over and over what he did (as he admitted to me), but the monster has grown 9 heards. Despite my best efforts, she will be known as A. L. Doe and only a few of us will know this was not her name. Thanks for your help. You are doing a great job with these Ropers and I was deligihted to get the dates for my gr.gr.grandparents. Shirley Maynard

Based upon all of the available evidence, I am most inclined to believe that this William ROPER was probably born about 1809 and that the cemetery marker was likely to be INCORRECT as to this WIlliam ROPER's age. That William and Susan Masters ROPER are both shown to be illiterate and that Larkin can neither read or write CANNOT possibly help in terms of recordkeeping or remembering! By contrast, I am inclined to believe that the date of death and place of interment shown is RELIABLE.
