ROPER with any high degree of certainty in the 1860 Census, there IS an "A. D. ROPER", age 25, occupation "Superintendent", Born GA, residing in the household of William B. and Atlantic MOORE, of Fayette County, Texas. While this seems UNLIKELY given the presence of a child Jesse, age 11, in the 1870 Census enumeration, the ONLY Jesse ROPER, age 1, I have found in the 1860 enumeration resides in the household of Jacinth and Darcas E. ROPER, of Forsyth County, GA. This child is shown to be "Jesse H. ROPER", age 1, born GA. One possibility is that Jesse was orphaned during the Civil War and was raised by Aaron D. ROPER. I haven't checked this against other KNOWN information regarding this Jacinth ROPER (b abt 1837 - SC).

The 1910 Census record shows that she has had FOUR (4) children of which only THREE (3) are then living. Presumably, Frank and Nettie/Nille ROPER had one additional child born AFTER 1900 who died BEFORE 1910. The Indices of Texas ROPER death records I posted at "Index of Texas ROPER Death Certificates, 1904-1945, By County" (03 Aug 2002 7:10 PM GMT) at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.roper/523 shows one ROPER death in Milam County between 1900 and 1904: Roper, Ben; Milam; 10 Jun 1904; 43052 You might want to obtain the death certificate of that Ben ROPER to see whether it yields some further genealogical details of this family! There is also precisely ONE other ROPER death in Milam County during the interval covered by my Index: Roper, Mary Frances; Milam; 30 Dec 1927; 41794 It is unclear whether Mary Frances ROPER is a member of this ROPER family, but you might want to order this death certificate and see what it says. There are several candidate Frank ROPER deaths elsewhere within the State of Texas: Roper, Frank; Harris; 4 Jul 1912; 17738 Roper, Frank; Harris; 7 Feb 1940; 8842 Roper, Frank Julian; Lubbock; 26 Dec 1939; 56515 Roper, Frank Mansfield; El Paso; 19 Jul 1913; 15179 The latter two would APPEAR to be disqualified by the indicated middle name.

While there is usually some variation in reported age within each Census enumeration, very often the ages are BEST for very young children. Here we have an instance when the reported date of birth in other subsequent documents would APPEAR to be LATER than the Census enumeration date (09 and 11 Jun 1900). It does NOT seem possible that he could have been born in July. By contrast, the indicated MONTH and YEAR of his birth shown in the Census (Feb 1900) appears to be reasonably CONSISTENT with his reported age of 5 months. It seems ALMOST CERTAIN that this is the CORRECT Werner/Verner ROPER. The three most reasonable explainations which readily occur to are (a) Werner may have been born within nine months of Frank and Nettie's marriage date and someone decided to push his asserted date of birth BACK to avoid embarassing questions, (b) by moving his age BACK several months he may have AVOIDED being drafted, (c) the asserted date of birth appearing in other later records may actually reflect a Baptismal date. Frank B. ROPER may be the SAME individual shown as "B.F. ROPER" on the draft registration card.

That registration card shows Verner ROPER's date of birth as 08 Jul 1900. Verner's enployer is shown to be "B. F. ROPER", with his occupation as "Laborer Farming". The record is somewhat hard to read and I am actually unfamiliar with the Draft Registration records so I am having trouble even making out some of the pre-printed information.

Have you obtained the death certificates or the applications for a social security number? Presumably, each of these would show the parents names. It is UNCLEAR whether our families are connected and, if so, how. I am from a line of ROPERs with a certain lineage to David ROPER (b 1744, d 1808 - Charles City County, VA). This David ROPER owned the ROPER plantation on the Chickahominy River, in Charles City County, which plantation seems to have been occupied by John ROPER at least as early as 1704 (based upon the Quit Rent Tax Roll) and patented by John ROPER in 1714. Other Posts on this message board give a great deal of information about this plantation and my line through David ROPER's son Rev. David ROPER, of Richmond, Virginia. There is a ROPER DNA Study underway which has demonstrated that many of the ROPERs who settled in America in the early Colonial period, including ROPERs from Virginia, Massachusetts and North Carolina are actually RELATED, but it remains UNCLEAR precisely HOW. It seems LIKELY given the presence of the given name "Jesse" in YOUR line that you may be a descendent of Charles ROPER (b abt 1720) and Anne GOODWYN, but please bear in mind that this is a SPECULATIVE ASCRIPTION based solely upon (a) the presence of a "Jesse" in your line, and (b) the apparent emergeance of your line from Tennessee, where several lines of descendents of Charles and Anne GOODWYN migrated. I am happy to be of assistance in trying to connect your ROPERs to other established lines, but it would probably be helpful to obtain the death certificates and social security applications to obtain the identities of the parents of Verner and Georgia Dawn ROPER. Also, if there is a ROPER surnamed MALE from this line who is willing to participate in the ROPER DNA study, DNA evidence could be used to rather quickly match to one of the better established ROEPR lines. But please bear in mind that this should be viewed as a SUPPLEMENT TO rather than a substitute for traditional genealogical evidence.

I gathered much new genealogical data and 9 Roper males living there agreed to test their Y-chromosomes. Results for 5 are in and 3 of them match 12 markers of the Majority USA Roper (MUR) family. This agrees with the genealogical data that indicates that the Massachusetts branch of MUR came from southern Norfolk in 1637. These 3 descend from Ropers in Thornham Magna, Woodbridge, and Eye in Suffolk and Bressingham, Norfolk, which is very near the Suffolk border. I call this expanded Roper family the Suffolk/USA Roper (SUR) family. Secondary sources show Ovel ROPER's place of birth as Dale, Hamilton County, IL, but I am unaware of the authority for this assertion. Ovel Vernon ROPER (b 03 Aug 1892 - IL, d 11 Jun 1982 - Hampton, Calhoun County, AR) seems to be first shown in the United States Census of 1900 enumerated with his sister Gazella Roper CROSNOE and brother-in-law Luther CROSNOE residing in Castor Township, Stoddard County, Missouri. Perhaps that logging camp was overlooked inthe enumeration. We are informed that Ovel Vernon ROPER married Nellie CABANISS (b 05 May 1904 - AR, d 30 Mar 1989 - Hampton, Calhoun County, AR) on 21 Jan 1921 at at Hampton, Calhoun County, AR. I have NOT seen the marriage license and am unfamiliar with the underlying documentation in support of either the place of marriage or the dates of birth and death, however these dates apparently ALL appear on the grave marker for Nellie's grave at Dickinson Cemetery, Calhoun County, AR. Ovel Vernon ROPER's grave is adjacent and his date of birth and death is given on his grave marker. The grave markers in this cemetery are transcribed in the RootsWeb Archives in a file described as "DICKINSON CEMETERY -- Calhoun County, AR" and named "dickinso.txt". In the 1930 United States Census, Ovel ROPER is enumerated in Jackson, Calhoun County, AR, residing adjacent to his brother Vollie Oliver ROPER ("V. R. I have been sorting this out. Be aware that there is also an increasing body of DNA evidence from the ROPER DNA study being administerred by Dr. L. David ROPER. Though most of the North Carolina ROPERs and many of the South Carolina ROPERs have already been shown to be genetically the SAME Majority USA ROPER Family ("MUR") as the Virginia and Massachusetts ROPERs, there are small deviations in the markers (mutations) which tend to distinguish different lines. Also, there have recently been three (3) DNA Matches of English ROPER-surnamed test subjects from the Norfolk/Suffolk area, whose results show that their Norfolk/Suffolk families share recent common ancestors with the ROPER family in the USA. But there are at least several very good CLUES in the extant Census records and marriage records for Illinois. Lewis ROPER is enumerated in the 1880 Census residing with wife Josephine and bhildren in Posey County, IN. This is reenforced in each individual record where the children's father is shown to have been born in ILLINOIS. While it is POSSIBLE that this ascription was erroneously reported by another family member who did NOT know his correct place of birth, as I will show in other Census records this is a rather persistent assertion over a long period of time. The assertion that Lewis ROPER's FATHER was born in Louisianna, is by contrast, somewhat more speculative, but still instructive. While it seems quite likely that Lewis would know where HE was born, correctly knowing where his FATHER was born could be somewat more problematic, particularly if he was orphaned at a young age. Ansel ROPER, age 27, is also nearby. * * * An inspection of the Illinois marriage Index reveals that "Jamima ROPER" married a William VAUGHAN on 05 Sep 1850 in Williamson County, IL. This marriage seems to be recorded at Volume "A", on Page 142. See my Post of Illinois ROPER Marriage Records on the ROPER Message Boards for details about Illinois marriage records and how to obtain copies. It seems most likely that Lewis ROPER is the child shown in the Census in 1850 as Lewis VAUGHAN. Since Lewis was born about 1848, it appears that his birth was BEFORE the marriage was solemnized according to the Illinois marriage laws in 1850. But is seems MOST LIKELY that William VAUGHAN is Lewis ROPER's father. If NOT, then Lewis may have been born out of wedlock before the marriage of another father and an ascription is then virtually impossible. It seems most likely that both William and Jemima Roper VAUGHAN died between 1850 and 1860 and Lewis was raised by his uncles and/or grandfather. Note that William VAUGHAN is shown in the Census in 1850 as being born in MS. Though this is NOT LOUISIANNA as is indicated inthe 1880 Census record, it also reflects that Lewis ROPER's father was NOT born in IL and was from a state to the South along the Mississippi. It is unclear to me where Elizabeth ABNER fits into this family, but there was an Elizabeth ABNER who married McDowel R. FLEMINGS on 16 Oct 1850 in Williamson County and whose marriage is recorded at Volume "A", Page 144. Perhaps someone else knows where she fits into this ROPER family. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT LEWIS ROPER IS A ROPER BY THE MATERNAL LINE THROUGH JEMIMA ROPER AND THAT HIS FATHER MAY HAVE BEEN (IS MOSTLY LIKELY TO HAVE BEEN) WILLIAM VAUGHAN. You can probably find some probate records of a Will or Administration, or perhaps some Orphans court guardianship records for Lewis VAUGHAN, if you meticulously check the records for Saline and adjacent counties during the interval from 1850 through 1860. There also may be some extant burial markers giving the dates of death of William and Jemima Roper VAUGHAN. I will separately send you the cited Census records via e-mail.

Zella ROPER is first shown in the Census in 1880 as "Gazella L. ROPER", at age 2, residing with her parents Lewis (age 32) and Josephine ROPER (age 27) in Harmony Township, Posey County, IN, on 04 JUN 1880. Also living in the Lewis and Josephine ROPER household that year were: Robert M. (age 13), Henry L. (age 12), Priscilla J. (age 10), Parmelia I. (age 8), William J. (age 7), Lutitia (age 4), Gazella L. (age 2), and Emma M. (age 1/12, born May 1880). Knowing that "Zella" is short for "Gazella" might ultimately help in locating any extant records of Zella's disposition after 1900. In 1900, Zella is enumerated in the household of Lther CROSNOE residing in Castor Township, Stoddard County, Missouri. That year, Zella is shown to be age 22, born in July 1878. Zella's younger brother Oval Vernon ROPER, age 7, born May 1893, is living in the CROSNOE household that year. It seems likely that Zella's precise date of birth appears on one or both of her marriage records. I would encourage you to obtain that precise date, which may help to leverage the location of Zella under some new married name or alternatively may help to find Zella in death records. It also seems possible that Oval ROPER might be a clue to Zella's whereabouts. Perhaps he was still living with or near her in 1910. I will e-mail you each of the cited Census records.
