    1. Is your Roper really a Rosser?
    2. Lewis
    3. I just discovered that the surname I was searching (ROPER) is really ROSSER. The double s (ss) is written in the old style on many records and appears to be (pe). Some of you who can't find any Roper info might want to re-check your records and make sure you have the right surname. I will be unsubscribing from this list and subscribing to the ROSSER list. <g> Thanks to fall for your help. Lewis

    3. I would check the notes section in a book called, "Slaves in the Family" by Edward Ball. Comingtee was a Ball family plantation and there are Roper names referenced in the book. Page 366 -- mentions the slaves who took the Roper name after being freed. The author interviewed a descendant, Sarah Roper England. Mrs. England said "our people came from Pawley's plantation and from Buck Hall." A planter named J.W. Roper owned Pawley's plantation but at some point it was purchased by a member of the Ball family. 3. Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the ROPER Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the ROPER List. BUT, this means that unless the the original Board poster is also a member of the List, any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link. Of course, it would also be appreciated if you copied your reply to the List as well. Thanks. Peter ROPER List Admin. He died 12/7/1971 in Hurricane, WV. He was my great-grandfather. Of their several children, Flora Ellen Rooper Cooper was my grandmother. Papaw Dewey and Mamaw Doris Mae, lived on Strawberry Rd, along the Coal River, in Kanawha County, WV, near my grandmother. Flora married Alonzo Frank Cooper, who went by the nickname Bootie and they had two children, Willard and Anna, my mother. Willard, who went by Chuck had no children, but adopted a son, Jeffrey. Anna Cooper married Earl Talley Stinnett, my dad, (the son of Edwin Talley and Elizabeth Stinnett) and they had four children, Vickie Lynn Stinnett Sicilia, Wayne Edwin Stinnett (myself), Michael Lee Stinnett and Frank Eric Stinnett. Dewey, Doris Mae, Flora, Alonzo, Chuck, Anna and Earl have all passed away. Only the four children of Anna and Earl survive this line, with their children. Dewey had several brothers and sisters and he and Doris Mae had several other children besides Flora. I know one at least still lives, Beatrice Rooper Washington, in Newark, NJ.
