You also mention that she is buried in the Old Mansfield Cemetery in Mansfield, LA, but neglect to give us her date of death. Also, it is unclear the basis of your belief that this Elizabeth Ann ROPER was the daughter of John and Elizabeth May ROPER or that she had come to LA from Mississippi. I would be delighted to try to be of some assistance, but it would be helpful to have as many specifics as are readily available so that time is NOT spent unnecessarily.

It would appear that Nancy Clara Ghormley ROPER returned to her home in NC to give birth to Lyman ROPER, but that Charles C. ROPER diedn't actually die until near the end of the decade. You might be able to ascertain further details of his death by obtaining the death certificate or looking for a contemporaneous obituary in Oregon or North Carolina.

Surnames: Roper, Raper, Ghormley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kgDBAEB/762.1 Message Board Post: I have NO PERSONAL knowledge ofthe Clara ROPER you seek, but thought that a quick sketch of some of the genealogical details regarding the BEST CANDIDATE I can readily identify might help to clarify who she probably was and to help others with a direct knowledge of or interest in this family get a little traction and, hopefully, to come forward to be of assistance to YOU. I find one Clara ROPER in the 1930 United States Census enumeration residing at Franklin, Macon County, NC: United States Census -- 1930 Franklin Township, Macon County, NC (Enumeration District 57-7), Sheet 2A, Page Imprinted "216" 07 Apr 1930 Line 3, Dwelling 18, Family 18, ROPER, Clara N., Head, Female, White, Age 54, Widowed, 1st Married at Age 28 (abt 1904), Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born TN, Occupation: "None" Line 3, Dwelling 18, Family 18, ROPER, Lyman, Son, Age 19, Single, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC, Laborer, Odd Jobs [Image 3 of 16 at Ancestry.com presentation of Census information for this jurisdiction in 1930.] The only OTHER Clara ROPER shown in North Carolina that year is a Clara ROPER, age 26, enumerated in High Point, Guilford, NC. * The Clara ROPER, of Franklin, appears to me to be the SAME indivdual shown to be residing in the household of Tom RAPER or ROPER at the date of the 1920 Census enumeration. She is clearly already a widow by that year: United States Census -- 1920 Franklin Township, Macon County, NC (Enumeration District 137), Sheet 12B or 13 B 22 Jan 1920 Line 71, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Tom, Head, Male, White, Age 44, Married, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC, Farmer Line 72, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Bicky, Wife, Female, White, Age 39, Married, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC Line 73, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Nide?, Son, Male, White, Age ??, Single, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC Line 74, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Carolina, Mother, Female, White, Age 78, Widowed, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC Line 75, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Jinnie, Sister, Female, White, Age 51, Single, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC Line 76, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Clair, Sister, Female, White, Age 43, Widowed, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC Line 77, Dwelling 233, Family 234, RAPER, Lymon, Son, Male, White, Age 8, Single, Born NC, Father Born NC, Mother Born NC [Image 24 of 34 at Ancestry.com presentation of Census information for this jurisdiction in 1930.] The record says "Sister" rather than "Sister-in-Law", but Clair is shown to have surname "ROPER" and to be a Widow. * In 1910, Tom ROPER, age 33, and Jennie, age 39, are shown to be living in the household of their mother Carolina ROPER, age 69, in Franklin, Macon County, NC. Clara ROPER is NOT present in that household, on the Census page nor can she be readily found within the County. * * * Clair/Clara ROPER's son, Lyman ROPER, seems likely to be the Lyman ROPER shown in the Social Security Death Index with DOB 29 Mar 1911, SSN 242-12-3950, and death in Mar 1992. Secondary sources show this Lyman ROPER as having died 23 Mar 1992 in Macon, NC, the son of Charles Clingman ROPER (b 21 Apr 1868 - Macon, NC) and Nancy Clara GHORMLEY (b 03 Mar 1876 - Graham, NC). This seems to well conform to your assertion that Clara ROPER was taking care of Mary CHORMLEY in 1935! Charles Clingman ROPER (b 21 Apr 1868 - Macon, NC) is identified by this secondary source as the son of Daniel ROPER (b 14 Apr 1836 - Burke, NC, d 20 Jan 1909 - Macon, NC) and Susan Caroline FOUTS (b 06 Apr 1839 - Macon, NC, d 12 Aug 1926 - Macon, NC). Other children of this couple include Barbara Virginia ("Jennie") ROPER (b 21 Oct 1863) and William Thomas ROPER (b 23 Aug 1876), who appear in the Census records cited above. * With this additional suggested information, we are readily able to locate the 1910 Census record of Charles C. ROPER, age 44, and wife Clara, age 34, residing in the household of Charles HILTON in Clarno Precinct, Wheeler County, Oregon. Some further investigation of Oregon records will probably reveal a death or burial record near that place within a year or two after the 18 Apr 1910 date of that Census enumeration. Bear in mind that ALL records seem to indicate that Lyman was born in NORTH CAROLINA, so it seems most likely that Nancy Clara Ghormley ROPER (b 03 Mar 1876 - Graham, NC) returned to Macon, North Carolina, after her husband's death but BEFORE Lyman ROPER was born on 29 Mar 1911. I say this both because the secondary sources indicate that Charles Clingman ROPER died in OREGON AND because I have a fairly complete list of recorded ROPER deaths in North Carolina during this interval and Charles ROPER I find no corresponding Charles ROPER death in North Carolina during the decade after 1910. * Checking the 1900 Census enumeration, we find a Clarley GHORMLEY, age 25, born March 1875, residing in the household of Michael GHORMLEY, age 78 (b Feb 1822), and Mary GHORMLEY, age 37. Mary GHORMLEY is shown to have been born July 1862. She and Michael are also shown to have been married for 28 years, so it would APPEAR that she was fudging her age by about a decade! The GHORMLEYs were enumerated that year in Nantahala, Macon County, NC. One son and four daughters are then residing in the GHORMLEY household: Clarly, age 25, Dick, age 21 (born Feb 1879), Minnie, age 20 (born Aug 1880), Emma, age 9 (b Jul 1890), and Alma?, age 6 (b Jan 1894). All are shown to have been born in NC. I hope this helps! Hopefully, another descendent of Daniel and Caroline ROPER or particularly of Lyman ROPER, can be of further assistance to you!

Being a first cousing three times removed to George Washington Roper, b. 25 Oct. 1850, Dallas County, Missouri, to Levicy Garmmon and John C. Roper, I can get the tree back a generation on him. John C. Roper, b. 10 April 1825, in Tompkinsville,Monroe County, Mo., to Hannah B. Martin and John C. "Jackie" Roper. Jackie Roper was b. 2 August 1796 in Virginia. Other data regarding Jackie follows: burial possibly at Roper Cemetery, Laclede County, Mo. Married to Hannah B. Martin Welcome Martin Roper born 16 March 1819 Milton Thomas Roper (2) born 1 November 1820 John C. Roper born 10 April 1825 Eliza Jane Roper born 10 August 1827 James Henry Roper born 25 December 1829 Emily Elizabeth Roper born 20 November 1832 Permilia T. Other notes regarding Jackie Roper: • Veteran War of 1812, enlisting in South Carolina, mustering out from New Orleans and moving to Tennessee • Apparently homesteaded land in Laclede County, Mo., not far from Webster County line, in 1840. Brought five slaves with him. • Apparently had a second wife • Buried at Prairie Grove, Mo., marker being a piece of sandstone. No one knows where wife Hannah is buried. --from opening paragraphs of a Roper history compiled by Mildred Ruth Roper Scofield. • Mustered out at New Orleans and went to Tennessee, info backed up by family Bible, cemeteries and area publications. Breeder of race horses not confirmed, but Chuck Daily says it's true. Certainly his grandchildren had a love of horses. My relationship to John C. "Jackie Roper follows: My mother, Sybil Clarrisa Cowden, was the daughter of Mary Jane Roper (1890-1965); Mary Jane was the daughter of Phillip Maulkey Roper (1869-1950); P.M., as he was called, was the son of James Henry Roper (1829)-1926), who was in turn the son of John C. Folks, this is yet another reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the ROPER Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the ROPER List. BUT, this means that unless the the original Board poster is also a member of the List, any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link. Of course, it would also be appreciated if you copied your reply to the List as well. Thanks. Peter ROPER List Admin. The Charles H(erman) mentioned in your posting was my wife's grandfather. He passed away in Tulsa, Tulsa, OK on 5 Sep 1994. When I was working on their genealogies, I asked him his grandparents' names. He told me that his grandfather was G. W. Roper and his grandmother was Josephine Wolfe. He did not have any dates or places for them. Unfortunately, I've come up to a roadblock on that branch.

Vernon Cemetery in Hurricane, Putnam County, WV, this past Tuesday. I'd found a website that said James, his wife Jane (Meddings) Rooper, their sons Brady Carl Rooper and my great grandfather Charles Ernest Rooper and his wife, Luella (Crowder) Roopera, plus lot of other Roopers that were kin and were buried there. I found Jane, Brady and Charles graves easy enough and many others, but found nothing for James Alexander "Polk" Rooper. Jane and Brady's graves don't have permenant stones, only little metal signs with paper inserts. Then I noticed there was what looked like a grave between Jane and Aladine Rooper. After further inspection, I found a similiar red brick and a piece of metal pole below the grass, the pole was what the little signs on Jane and Brady's graves were placed in. I'd found "Polks" grave. Now, maybe it's me, but it just doesn't seem right to leave them there with no stone. He was the proginator of the Rooper clan in Putnam County. I've contacted the pastor of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and he will call me today. The cemetery is on their property and I'm sure they have a cemetery committee. What I want to do is get permenant markers for all three of these Roopers, through all there decendants. I will get the ball rolling and ask that the pastor be the one to hold the money as it comes in. After I speak with him later today, I'll post on here any ideas he has. There are a number of Rooper decendants in the area still. They are probably unaware that they wouldn't even exist had "Polk" not journeyed up the Kanawha River from Galipolis, OH and decided he liked the area and settled there. I remember as a kid that my grandmother, Flora Ellen (Rooper) Cooper would take us up to the cemetery with "Ma" and "Pa" (Ernest and Luella) and the rest of the Rooper caln on Memorial Day, to put flowers on all the Rooper graves and to just stay there all day. Some would bring food and others would go to their homes nearby for lunch, but would return. It'd be great if I can get this done within a year and do it next Memorial Day. I know a lot of the Roopers still do this, because a lot of the graves had new flowers.

My husband Jim Watson & I have just sent in DNA samples to a project run by IBM and National Geographic. Jim's results are back, but not aren't ready yet. Anyway, I just asked Jim what he was listening to on the computer and he said he was listening to a Roper talking about the project. I asked him if it was Dr. LD Roper, retired VA Tech Professor, and lo and behold it was our own Dave Roper. How exciting! Thx for all you do for the Ropers, Dave.
