Though the 1900 Census shows this Emmet Lee ROPER to have been born in Jan 1886, Emmet's WW I draft card dated 12 Sep 1918 shows Emmet Lee ROPER to have been born on 01 Mar 1884. The draft card also shows Emmet to be tall, of medium build with blue eyes and light hair. He is then shown to be living at RFD 2, Staunton, Augusta County, VA. He is shown to be a Fire Man with the Staunton Lighting Company. His nearest releative is shown to be wife Mallie M. ROPER. So this appears to be a different Lee ROPER. * Emmet Lee ROPER's death is recorded at age 57 on 20 May 1945 in Perry County, KY [Volume 28, Certificate 13539]. The name appearing on the death certificate is shown in the Index to be "Emmit L. ROPER". Mallie ROPER's death MIGHT BE the death of a Mallie ROPP recorded in KY on 03 Aug 1936 [Vol. 43, Certificate 21102], but this should be considered a speculative ascription. Emmet Lee ROPER's son Robert Lawrence ROPER is shown in Kentucky death records to have died at age 41 on 08 Mar 1953 in Letcher County, KY [Volume 13, Certificate 6125]. Secondary sources show Emmet Lee ROPER's daughter Nettie as having died in Ogden, UT, in 1981. The SSDI suggests to us that this might have been the individual shown in the records as Netta FERRIN (b 10 Jan 1914, d Oct 1981 - Ogden, Weber, UT). Her SSN 403-14-3072 was issued in Kentucky and her name, date of birth and date of death seems to precisely correspond to the information in the Census and given by the secondary source. Possible candidates for Netta Roper FERRIN's husband, based solely upon proximate FERRIN deaths in this Zip Code include Oscar FERRIN (b 29 Apr 1896, d Nov 1970 - UT) and Clyde W. FERRIN (b 16 Dec 1907, d 11 Jul 1999 - UT). Bear in mind that this is a SPECULATIVE ascription! Perhaps someone with a better understanding of this family can clarify. Secondary sources show Emmet Lee ROPER's daughter as having married a John Thomas BUNTON. These sources also infomr us that Etta Louise Roper BUNTON died in 1990 in Bristol, VA. The SSDI shows us that there was a Louise R. [Roper] BUNTON (b 11 May 1917, d 18 Feb 1990), with SSN 407-36-7169 issued in KENTUCKY and last residence in Zip Code 24201 (Bristol, Bristol, VA). This seems likely to be Etta Lousie Roper BUNTON. There are several John and Thomas BUNTON deaths shown in Kentucky. It is unclear which of these reflects the death of John Thomas BUNTON, if he is, in fact, deceased. Emmet Lee ROPER, Jr., (b 1919 - KY) enlisted in the U.S. Army during WW II on 05 Apr 1944 at Fort Thomas Newport, KY. A young man, he was a resident of Henrico County. (p. 3, c. 1) " This seems to clarify that the John ROPER killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound was the younger John ROPER rather than an elder John ROPER.

ROPER appears in the January 5, 1835, edition of the Richmond Whig. This Edmond P. ROPER is almost certainly the Edmond P. ROPER, son of John ROPER (b abt 1770 - Charles City, VA, d aft 1850 - prob Henrico, VA), discussed in the previous Post. Edmond ROPER seems likely to be one of the two sons shown inthe 1820 Census record, but does NOT seem to appear in his father's household in 1830. But there is no other Census record in 1830 which seems to reflect Edmond ROPER as a head of household. He seems to be still living in someone else's household in 1830. I have NOT seen the cited obituary. If someone else has ready access to this obituary, I would appreciate seeing precisely what it says.

From the sequence of names in David ROPER's Will, it seems most likely that John ROPER is the eldest son. A birth year of abt 1770 would indicate that David ROPER was about age 26 at John ROPER's birth. John ROPER's presence in James TURNER's household is suggestive that he might be Elizabeth TURNER's father. John J. EPPS' appearance in this household is suggestive that Elizabeth ROPER might have been the widow of an EPPS, who married James TURNER about 1839. * I believe the clue to the identity of this Elizabeth TURNER is given in the deed dated 16 JAN 1834, a transciption of which is shown at Dr. L. David ROPER's website at http://www.roperld.com/rva18.htm . The text reads in part: "This Indenture made this sixteenth day of January in the year eighteen hundred and thirty four between John Roper, Edmond P. Roper, Lewis L. Charles and Martha P. his wife, Edmond Eppes and Elizabeth P. his wife and Sarah M. Roper the said Lewis S. Charles Martha P. his wife and Sarah M. Roper of the County of Albermurel and the said John Roper, Edmond P. Roper, Edmond Eppes and Elizabeth P. his wife of the County of Henrico of one part and John Whitlock of the last said County of the other part. ..." It is unclear from the instrument the relationship Edmond and Elizabeth EPPES bear to the other ROPERs named, but it APPEARS likely that Elizabeth P. EPPES is a ROPER. Martha P. CHARLES seems also likely to be a ROPER. What seems likely is that the farm of John ROPER is being sold DURING HIS LIFETIME and the proceeds being divided amongst his children. By 1834, John ROPER was probably also blind and therefore dependant upon his children for care. I am inclined to believe that this record iplicitly identifies for us the surviving children of John ROPER at the date of this 1834 instrument: Edmond P. ROPER, Martha P. (Roper) CHARLES, Elizabeth P. (Roper) EPPES, and Sarah M. ROPER, widow of another son of John ROPER. This is reasonably consistent with the 1810 Census record for John ROPER which shows what appears to be an older son -- possibly John Jr. -- and a younger son, as well as two younger daughters. The 1820 Census record appears to show two sons age 16 to 25 and three younger daughters. There is one Edmond EPPES in Henrico, VA, in the 1820 Census: Edmond EPPES: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 2 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 [Image 21 of 52 at the Ancestry.com presentation of 1820 Census data for this jurisdiction] Edmond is age 45 or over (b bef 1776). His wife, possibly Elizabeth, is age 26 to 44 (b abt 1776-94). Based solely upon proximity, I am inclined to believe that the marriage record of Elizabeth ROPER to William MINOR on 24 AUG 1819 may very well apply to John ROPER's daughter. Note the appearance of an Elizabeth MINOR in the 1830 Census enumeration two records away from John ROPER in Henrico. I am GUESSING that William MINOR died before 1830 and that Elizabeth Roper MINOR then subsequently remarried Edmund EPPES. This speculative ascription is somewhat supported by the finding of a marriage record showing the marriage of Martha P. ROPER to Lewis L. CHARLES on 22 MAY 1828 in Henrico County, VA. (This at least supports my inference that the reason the wives were shown in the deed record was because they were daughters of John ROPER.) * I am inclined to believe that the Elizabeth TURNER, age 60, shown residing within the household of Anslem C. and Martha GARTHRIGHT is probably John ROPER's daughter Elizabeth P. ROPER, following the death of James TURNER. There is a marriage record in Henrico showing: John ROPER m Mrs. Elizabeth GARTHRIGHT on 25 MAY 1814 at Henrico, VA. It is unclear to me whether this was the second marriage of Elizabeth's father John ROPER or perhaps the marriage of her brother John ROPER, but it seems likely that there is a family connection. * * * I would much appreciate hearing from anyone with additional insight or information regarding this family!

This John ROPER appears on the page with page number imprinted "101", which page is shown at Image 32 of 52 at the Ancestry.com presentation of the 1820 Census data for this jurisdiction. At the TOP of this Census page is Edward SCOTT. John ROPER appears nearer the bottom of the page along with Rebecca REYNOLDS, Betsey REYNOLDS, and Thomas M. RANDOLPH. An additional section of "S" names appears thereafter. (Note: this enumeration is quasi-aphabetical, rather than based upon interview sequence.) John ROPER's 1820 Census record indicates: John ROPER: 0 - 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 -- 3 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 1 - 0 - 1 -- 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 -- 0 - 2 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 -- 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 So it appears that John ROPER was still in Henrico at least at the date of the 1820 Census enumeration and had still had five slaves in his household that year. * It seems most likely that the John ROPER, of Henrico, who was killed in 1820 was another different John ROPER, perhaps the son, age 16 to 25 shown in John ROPER's 1810 Census enumeration.

Surnames: Roper Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/787 Message Board Post: According to an Index entry at the Virginia State Library, appearing in the American Commercial Beacon and Norfolk & Portsmouth Daily Advertiser on Monday, July 10, 1820, was this death notice: "Died - On Wednesday, July 5, John Roper, a resident of Henrico County, by shooting himself." (p. 3, c. 2) This entry is apparently taken from the marriage and obituary citations compiled by Bernard J. Henley from Virginia newspapers on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. I have NOT seen the original entry. In the 1810 United States Census, there was one John ROPER residing in Henrico County: John ROPER: 1 - 0 - 1 - 1 - 0 -- 2 - 0 - 0 - 2 - 0 -- 1 - 6 This John ROPER therefore appears to have been age 26 to 44 in 1810 (b abt 1766-1784). His wife would appear to be of similar age. The presence of six slaves in this household is highly suggestive that the John ROPER shown in the 1810 Census record is John ROPER, son of David ROPER (b 13 NOV 1744, d 16 APR 1808 - Charles City, VA). That John ROPER received slaves by deed of gift from his father in 1804 and again by Will upon his father's death in 1808. The 1804 deed of gift said in part: "Know all men by these presents that David Roper of the County of Charles City for and in consideration of the love and affection which I bear to my son John Roper and for the farther consideration of the sum of one dollar to me in hand paid by the said John Roper the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have given granted bargained and sold and by these presents do give grant bargain and sell unto my said son John Roper the following slaves to wit; Mary, Lotsey and Billy, to have and to hold the said slaves to my sd son John Roper his heirs and assigns forever, the title to which said slaves against me my heirs and assigns and every other person and persons unto the said John Roper his heirs and assigns will forever warrant and defend." This deed was executed on 13 APR 1804 and proved on 18 APR 1804. (see the transcription posted at Dr. L. David ROPER's website at http://www.roperld.com/rva18.htm ) The Will stated in part: "Then, after my just debts are paid; I give and bequeath to my son John Roper four Negroes which he hath now in his possession Nirt, Mary, Letsy, Randol and Debby: also an equal proportion of my household furniture: to him and his heirs forever. ... My desire is that my Man Fill and his wife live or continue with my son John Roper, but not as slaves; but to do moderate labour, and should they live to become chargeable in the Judgement of my executors then in that case, they shall be maintained out of my Estate." Note that Mary and Lotsey/Letsey seem to appear in BOTH the deed of gift AND the Will. Taken together, the list seems to be: Mary, Lotsey/Letsey, Billy, Nirt, Randol and Debby This works out to precisely SIX slaves, the exact number shown in the 1810 Census record. There is also one freed slave seemingly living in the John ROPER household, presumably "Fill" or his wife. This John ROPER does NOT seem to appear in the 1820 Census enumeration. Amongst those enumerated in 1820 in Henrico were an Elizabeth ROPER, Billy ROPER, Billy ROPER and Silvia ROPER. She seems to have two sons in her household, one age 10 to 16 and the other age 16 to 26. The first Billy ROPER seems to be a free colored male under age 14, remarkably with a female slave of age 26 to 44. The latter Billy ROPER seems to be a free colored male of age 26 to 44 with two free colored females of age 14 to 25 residing in his household. Silvia seems to be a free colored female of age 26 to 44, with two free colored males and one free colored female under age 14 residing in her household. * * * There is more than a little reason to suppose that the John ROPER shown to be residing in Henrico, Virginia, in 1810 was son of David ROPER (b 13 NOV 1744, d 16 APR 1808 - Charles City, VA). It is less clear that the John ROPER, of Henrico who died on July 5, 1820, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound was this same John ROPER. The John ROPER who died might have also been a SON of this John ROPER. One clue that this might have been the case is the reappearance in 1830 of a John ROPER in Henrico who is shown to be of age 60 to 70 (b abt 1760-70). It seems possible that the elder John ROPER was simply away in 1820 at the date of the Census. He may have moved to the frontier to stake a claim on some land, etc. In any event, it appears that John ROPER freed his slaves. The John ROPER reappearing in Henrico seems to have a wife age 40 to 50 and two daughters, one age 10 to 14 and one age 15 to 19, rsiding in his household. It would probably be a good idea to check the deed records and Will records for Henrico to ascertain whether there are additional extant clues to the ultimate disposition of the descendants of this John ROPER.

She may be found at age 9 residing with her parents and siblings in Township 5, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, in the 1900 Census enumeration. Her father is shown in that enumeration as H. C. ROPER, age 41 (b Oct 1858 - KY) and Zora ROPER, age 32 (b Nov 1867 - MS). The Census record shows Rhoda ROPER to have been born in March 1891. Secondary sources show Henry Clay ROPER to have been born on 14 OCT 1858 in Paducah County [sic], KY, and to have died on 22 SEP 1944 at Ada, OK. (Please note that Paducah is actually a city in McCracken County, KY.) Secondary sources show Henry's wife to be Zora COWART (b 24 NOV 1867 - Jackson County, MS, d 17 JUN 1945 - Ada, OK). This couple is shown to have married on 24 DEC 1886. Perhaps you may obtain Henry Clay ROPER's death certificate to verify this infomration. If you use an SS-5 Letter to obtain her original application for a Social Security Number, it will presumably verify her parents names. * Henry C. ROPER, age 51, and Zora ROPER, age 42, were enumerated in Maxwell Township, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, in 1910. Henry C. ROPER is shown to have been born in Kentucky. His father is shwon to have been born in Kentucky and his mother is shown to have been born in VIRGINIA. Zora is shown to have been born in Mississippi. Her father is shown to have been born in Mississippi and her mother is shown to have been born in NORTH CAROLINA. Henry and Zora are shown to have been married 22 year (m abt 1888). This is shown to be Henry's SECOND MARRIAGE. This is consistent with the indication in the 1900 Census record that Henry's eldest two sons Liley and Alonzo had a mother who was born in Kentucky rather than Mississippi. Rhoda is shown to be age 19 that year and still single and living at home. Henry C. ROPER, age 61, and Zora ROPER, age 52, are shown to be residing in Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, in 1920. Henry C. ROPER is again shown to have been born in Kentucky to parents each born in Kentucky. Zora is shown to have been born in Mississippi to parents each born in Mississippi. Henry C. A STRONG clue that this Jay Lillie ROPER is related to Henry Clay ROPER is the given name of Henry Clay ROPER's eldest son "Liley ROPER", age 18 in 1900, born May 1882 - Indian Teritory. The second son, possibly Alonzo, was born in August 1884 in Arkansas. There is also a Robert J. ROPER, age 28 (b Dec 1871 - Georgia) residing with wife Vira, age 28 (b Jan 1871), and children Joseph, age 15 (b Feb 1885 - NC), John R., age 11 (b May 1889 - NC), and Clyde, age 2 (b abt Jul 1897 - IN), residing within this same Township 5, Chickasaw Nation. There is also a John H. There are several candidates that merit consideration. In the 1880 Census, the BEST candidate would appear to be the Henry ROPER, age 21, shown to be residing within the household of Walter EDWARDS, age 30, and Margaret EDWARDS, age 23, of Titus, Texas. This Henry ROPER is shown to be Walter EDWARDS' brother-in-law and therefore, presumably, Margaret's brother. Titus is in North Texas near the Red River and therefore in close proximity to Indian Territory. But Henry ROPER's and Margaret EDWARDS' parents are shown to have been both born in North Carolina. This would appear to be the SAME Henry ROPER, age 12, enumerated in Titus, Texas, in the 1870 Census enumeration residing within the household of James ROPER, age 40, and Lucinda ROPER, age 36. This Henry ROPER is also shown to have been born in Texas and his paretns are each shown to have been born in North Carolina. In the 1860 Census enumeration, the most compelling candidate would appear to be Henry C. ROPER, age 1, son of Isaac S. ROPER, age 25, and Elizabeth ROPER, age 24, of Banks County, Georgia. But this Henry C. ROPER is shown to have been born in Georgia rather than Kentucky. Isaac S. and Elizabeth ROPER are shown to have continued to reside at Poplar Springs, Banks County, Georgia, in 1870 and Henry C. ROPER is no longer in the household that year. * The naming patterns of Henry C. ROPER's children give us some other clues regarding his relationships to other ROPER families. As aforementioned, there is an Alonzo ROPER (b Aug 1884 - AR), who might have been named for Alonzo S. ROPER (b abt 1861 - KY), son of William H. and Elizabeth ROPER, of Hickman, Fulton County, Kentucky. This William H. ROPER (b abt 1821 -KY) was the Sheriff of Fulton County in 1870. Similarly, secondary sources show one of Henry C. ROPER's children to be a Samuel Dutoy ROPER (b 22 Sep 1887, d 24 Oct 1888 - Indian Territory). "Dutoy" is a very uncommon name. A Dutoy ROPER (b Feb 1888 - TN) is shown in the household of Sloan and Sallie ROPER, of Lake County, TN. This Sloan ROPER is shown to have been born in Aug 1860 in Kentucky to paretns both born in Kentucky. Similarly, there is a "Dutah ROPER", age 35, with wife Burnette, age 28, residing in Lake County, TN, in 1870. He has sons Sloan, age 10, and Robert Lee , age 6, as well as daughter Amanda, age 3, residing in his household. Dutoy, Burnette, Sloan and Robert Lee are each shown to have been born in Kentucky. Amanda was born in Tennessee. Joseph A. ROPER, age 30, is enumerated inthe adjacent record and seems likely to be residing next door. Also in this household is Zulima ROPER, age 56, Leviza A. ROPER, age 23, and John C. ROPER, age 29. Each was born in Kentucky. In 1860, this same Dutoy ROPER, age 24, [Shown in the Ancestry.com index as "Duty ROPER"] is residing with wife Burnette, age 19, and Harriett ROPER, age 54, in Moscow, Hickman County, Kentucky. Dutoy and Burnette are shown to have been born in Kentucky. Harriett ROPER is shown to have been born in North Carolina. Elam ROPER, age 42, and his family is residing nearby. The 1850 Census shows Dutoy ROPER, age 15 [shown in the Ancestry Index as "Dutray ROPER"], residing with Harriett ROPER, age 45, M. ROPER, age 16, F, Joseph ROPER, age 13, and S.O. ROPER, age 7, F. Harriet is shown to have been born in North Carolina. The children were all born in Kentucky. Again, Elam ROPER, is nearby. There is also another Dutoy ROPER, age 15, in Fulton County, KY, residing in the household of John ROPER, age 33, and Nancy ROPER, age 24. This Dutoy is also shown to have been born in Kentucky, as was John ROPER. Nancy ROPER was born in Tennessee. The 1840 Census shows one Dutoy ROPER, and this Dutoy also resides in Hickman County, KY. This Dutoy ROPER is shown to be age 30 to 39 (b abt 1801-10). The wife is also shown to be of similar age. It seems most likely that Harriett ROPER (b abt 1805) is Dutoy ROPER's widow. This Joseph Allen ROPER is identified witin secondary sources as the son of Dutoy and Harriett ROPER, as is shown in the Census records cited above. Nor have I found any obvious record for this Isaac ROPER (b abt 1830 - England) anywhere in teh United States in 1860. * In 1880, there is a somewhat older Isaac ROP, age 36?, born PA, residing with brother Levi J. ROP, age 31, and wife Nancy, age 27. Levi ROP is also shown to be born in PA and both Levi and Isaac ROP are shown to be born to parents both of whom were also born in PA. In 1880, there was also an Isaac ROPER, age 29, born IL, residing with wife Sarah E. ROPER, age 29?, in Douglas, Saline County, Illinois. This Isaac ROPER's parents are shown to each have been born in NC. This couple is rather clearly Isaac and Sarah E. Motsinger ROPER, who married in Saline COunty on 28 Jan 1878. And there was also a younger Isaac ROPER, age 22, born in TN, to parents both born in TN, who is shown to be residing with his brothers A.C. and Samuel ROPER in Saline, Madison County, Illinois. This seems likely to be the Isaac H. Note that the AGE (50) and year of birth (1840) given in the 1900 Census record do NOT agree. The AGE given in 1900 (50) DOES agree with the age given in 1870 (20). I am ASSUMING that the AGES age roughly correct. This Census record also informs us that this Isaac ROPER seems to have come to America in 1858 and therefore OUGHT TO BE found in the 1860 and 1880 United States Census. Presumably, this Isaac ROPER also ought to be found in the 1851 Census of England. Within the 1851 Census of England, there seem to be six particularly compelling candidates to be the Isaac ROPER (b abt 1850) who settled in Illinois. Isaac ROPER, age 2, of Bilston, Staffordshire, apparantly son of William and Mary Ann ROPER.* Isaac ROPER, age 1, of Elland with Greetland, Yorkshire, apparantly son of Emma ROPER Isaac ROPER, age 1, of Sedgley, Staffordshire, son of Isaac and Phoebe ROPER Isaac ROPES, age 1, of Fishwick, Lancashire, son of Robert and Sarah ROPES Isaac ROPER, age 1 mos, of Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, son of Andrew and Elizabeth ROPER * This Isaac, along with his parents, seems to have been enumerated twice within Bilston, Staffordshire, once while a visitor in the household of Stephen and Sarah HILL. * * * These records at least somewhat correspond to records for births of Isaac ROPERs shown in the English Civil Registration Index: Isaac ROPER, birth registered Dec Qtr, 1848, Dudley District, Staffordshire Worcestershire Isaac ROPER, birth registered Sep Qtr, 1849, Dudley District, Staffordshire Worcestershire Isaac ROPER, borth registered Mar Qtr, 1850, Dewsbury District, West Riding of Yorkshire * * * William and Mary Ann ROPER, parents of Isaac ROPER, age 2, of Bilston, Staffordshire, are shown to be age 48 and 44, respectively, in 1851. This Isaac ROPER was born in Bilston, Staffordshire, as was his mother. His father is shown to have been born in Broseley, Shropshire. In the second enumeration in which this Isaac ROPER appeared , he is shown to have been born in Sedgley, Staffordshire, England. William ROPER is a coal miner. In 1871, this Isaac, age 19, is still residing with his father William (b abt 1829 - Broseley, Shropshire), stepmother Tryphenia, age 42, and his brothers and sisters: Enoch, age 19, Sarah, age 17, William, age 15, Tryphenia, age 12, and Jane, age 10. In 1881, this Issac ROPER, age 32, is residing in Bilston, Staffordshire, with wife Sarah Ann ROPER, and children Ann ROPER, age 2, and Alfred J. ROPER, 3 mos. It seems that we can rule this Isaac OUT. Emma ROPER, who appears to be the mother of Isaac ROPER, is shown to be age 44, in 1851. She is residing with William and Mary SMITHIES, where Emma appears to be working as a domestic. Emma is shown to have been born in Yorkshire Halifax. This Isaac ROPER is shown to have been born in Yorkshire Batty Carr. The Isaac appears to be still residing with his parents Eli and Emma ROPER in Batley, Yorkshire in 1871. It seems that we can rule this Isaac OUT. Isaac and Phoebe ROPER, ages 41 and 40, respectively, were each born in Sedgley:Coseley, Staffordshire, as was Isaac Jr. Also residing within this household are Prudence, age 16, Esther, age 11, and Abraham, age 9. Isaac Jr. is the youngest shown in 1851. Isaac ROPER (b abt 1810 - Sedgley:Coseley, Staffordshire) is a coal miner. The Isaac ROPES, age 1, found in Fishwick, Lancashire, is clearly the same child shown in the parish records as: Isaac ROPER (Chr 11 NOV 1849 - Saint John, Preston, Lancashire, England), son of Robert and Sarah ROPER The parents, Robert and Sarah ROPER, are shown to be ages 45 and 46, respectively. Also present in this household are sisters Esther, age 16, and Sarah Jane, age 4. Ester and Sarah Jane are shown to have been born in Preston, Lancashire. Isaac is shown to have been born in Fishwick. Robert, who is shown to be have occupation "Shop Reeper" is shown to have been born in Standish, Lancashire. Sarah was born in Whittle, Lancashire. Isaac ROPER, age 21, born Preston, Lancashire, is shown to be residing at Whitworth, Spotland, Lancashire, in 1871, where he is employed as a "Grocer". Andrew and Elizabeth ROPER, aged 37 and 36, respectively, are residing with children Andrew, age 8, Charles, age 4, and Isaac, 1 mos. Andrew ROPER is a "Edge Tool Forger" born in Dronfield Derbyshire. ELizabeth and each of the children was born in Sheffield Yorkshire. Elizabeth CARNES, age 13, is shown to be a servant in this household. * * * This seems to leave us with two viable prospects: Isaac ROPER, age 1, of Sedgley, Staffordshire, son of Isaac and Phoebe ROPER Isaac ROPER, age 1 mos, of Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, son of Andrew and Elizabeth ROPER * Isaac and Phoebe ROPER do NOT seem to appear in the 1871 English census enumeration. Neither does Andrew ROPER. But Isaac ROPER, age 10, of Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, son of Andrew and Elizabeth ROPER, DOES appear inthe 1861 Census record with his parents. This would place him with his parents in England at a time when his Isaac ROPER's 1900 Census record suggests he should already be in America. And Isaac ROPER, of Ecclesall Bierlow, seems a year too YOUNG to be Isaac ROPER, of Illinois, anyway. Isaac ROPER (b abt 1810 - ), of Sedgley, Staffordshire, at age 50, is still shown to be residing in Segley, in 1861, but he is shown to be a widower (Phoebe seems to have died) and only Esther, age 21, remains within this household. Phoebe ROPER's death is no doubt the death recorded during Sep Qtr 1858 at Dudley District, Staffordshire/Worcestershire, at Vol. 6c., Page 33. Note that this is also the year that Isaac ROPER, of Illinois seemed to come to America. * * * Accordingly, I believe that it is MOST LIKELY that the Isaac ROPER (b abt 1850 - England) shown in the 1870 and 1900 Census residing in Illinois is probably: Isaac ROPER, age 1, of Sedgley, Staffordshire, son of Isaac and Phoebe ROPER Isaac ROPER, birth registered Sep Qtr, 1849, Dudley District, Staffordshire Worcestershire, The parents are no doubt the couple shown in this parish record: Isaac ROPER m Phebe FOWNES on 02 AUG 1829 at Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester, England [IGI Batch No. M040144] The elder Isaac ROPER seems to possibly be: Isaac ROPER (Chr 06 JAN 1808 - Sedgley, Stafford, England), son of Abraham and Hannah ROPER [IGI Batch No. J009986] However, it should be noted that the Census of England records are suggestive that this Isaac ROPER was age 30 in 1841, age 41, in 1851, and age 50 in 1861. So we are EXPECTING Isaac to have been born about 1810. There is also another parish record which should be considered a possibility: Isaac ROPER (b 17 JUL 1805, Chr 16 SEP 1810 - Halifax, Yorkshire, England), son of Luke and Jane ROPER [C007494] But it should be noted that the year of birth 1805 may be even EARLIER. Also, The Isaac ROPER who married Phoebe named his eldest daughter Hannah and his eldest son Abraham. And there is a somewhat younger Thomas ROPER, age 12, residing with Henry ROPER, age 72, at Barn Field Cottage, Honington, Suffolk. This Henry ROPER appears to be a particularly wealthy farmer. There are a total of twelve Thomas ROPERs age 13 to 17 shown in the 1841 Census. The Thomas ROPER residing within the household of Lionel ROPER is the ONLY one of these who seems to have been born in Suffolk. I was initially inclined to believe that the appearance of the name "Walter" amongst Thomas and Rhoda ROPER's children also supported this ascription (note the appearance of Walton ROPER in the household of Lionel and Fanny ROPER), but for reasons explained below, I no longer believe that this is argument has any merit. There does NOT appear to be any Thomas ROPER living within the household of an Osborn ROPER in 1841. The ascription of Thomas ROPER, of Illinois, as the Thomas ROPER (b 19 AUG 1826, Chr 11 SEP 1826 - Bedfield, Suffolk, England), son of Ann ROPER, is far from certain. It would be a good idea to examine Thomas ROPER's Illinois marriage record and any extant death record, including burial marker to be more confident. It would also probably be a good idea to get a look at the Suffolk death records showing deaths of: Thomas ROPER, death recorded Sep Qtr 1839, Mildenhall District, Suffolk, Vol. 13, Page 219 Thomas ROPER, death recorded March Qtr 1843, Hoxne District, Norfolk/Suffolk, Vol. 13, Page 3?7 * Finding Thomas ROPER in the 1851 Census was somewhat more problematic. One EXPECTED to be looking for a Thomas ROPER with a son James ROPER (b abt 1847) and possibly a Joseph ROPER (b abt 1849). If Joseph ROPER was born in America, we would expect to look for Thomas in the United States in 1850. But now it is asserted that Charles ROPER, age 19 (b abt 1851), was born in ENGLAND. And Charles was YOUNGER than Joseph ROPER. Joseph ROPER is NOT readily identifiable in the 1870 U.S. Census enumeration. * There is precisely ONE Thomas ROPER born in Suffolk who seems to be of the correct age to be Thomas ROPER (b 19 AUG 1826, Chr 11 SEP 1826 - Bedfield, Suffolk, England, d aft 1880 - Poss KS). This is a Thomas ROPER shown to be residing as a Lodger within the household of Charlotte BLOOMFIELD in Cotton, Suffolk. THis Thomas ROPER is shown to have been born in "Bitfield [sic] Suffolk". This seems likely to be a reference to Bedfield (there seems to be no such place as "Bitfield" anyway). First, this Thomas ROPER appears to be UNMARRIED. And second the eldest children, James and Joseph ROPER, are NOT present in this household. * This problem is readily explained by Thomas ROPER's 1859 marriage to Rhoda NUTALL. The elder ROPER children in the Thomas and Rhoda ROPER household are Rhoda's children, but NOT Thomas ROPER's biological children. Consider this 1851 Census record for William and Rhoda NUTALL in Swindon, Wiltshire: Census of England -- 1851 Bath Street, Swindon, Wiltshire William NUTALL, Head, Married, Male, Age 33, Mechanic, Born Bornet Berry, Wiltshire Rhoda NUTALL, Wife, Married, Female, Age 24, Born Lyddiard, Wilshire James NUTALL, Son, Unm, Male, Age 4, Born Swindon, Wiltshire Joseph NUTALL, Son, Unm, Male, Age 2, Born Swindon, Wiltshire [Image 60 of 73 at the Ancestry.com presentation of the 1851 Census of England data for this jurisdiction.] It therefore appears to me to be LIKELY that ALL of the ROPER children shown in Thomas and Rhoda ROPER's household in 1860 EXCEPT FOR Frederick -- James, Joseph, Charles, Walter, Ellen -- were likely to have been children of William and Rhoda NUTALL. I will leave further proof of this ascription to those with a singular interest in this family.
